..if you found someone that you really wanted to be with and your parents couldn't see what you did in them and really disliked them...would you stay with them/what would you do/how would you react..?...

I don't think my dad would say anything to me, even if he did hate him. If my partner was rude to my dad though, then i'd definitely defend my dad over him, for sure. There's no way i would stay with a partner that was rude to my family.

..yeah, it would be equally as difficult if your partner didn't like your parents for some reason and didn't conceal it very well...

My parents did hate my ex partner, disliked him on first impressions and then it developed based on his behaviour.

They were so right.

Might make Christmas lunch a bit awkward but I wouldn't leave them, can't really see my parents ever disliking someone who I was with without very strong reason though (in which case I think I'd probably see it myself too)

I would definitely consider breaking up with the person, I was down that road before and my family and friends were right in the end. Luckily they all love Gav though

I knew my dad did not approve of my gangster partner, so we kept our distance.
When he was jailed for a long sentence I eventually went back home.
Nothing was said, until he made front page headlines in all the tabloids due to him getting an early release, my dad then told me that he better not appear on his doorstep. I had already met hubby by then and had lost all interest in the gangster...just as well really.

Having seen what this exact scenario has done to my family, I would always listen to my parents if they said they didn't like someone I was with... they've got more life experience than me and they would only be telling me what they think I needed to hear, they wouldn't tell me they disliked the person I was with if they didn't have very good reasons to think that and I know that it would come from a place of concern, not spite or anything. So yeah I'd break up with someone if my parents thought they were awful.

nope I wouldn't even consider it. I think I'm a good judge of character anyway and my parents wouldn't dislike somebody without good reason, but if I was happy with them I'd stay in the relationship.

Think my parents would still respect my decision and welcome them even if they didn't like them that seemed to be the case whenever my sister and brother brought home new partners

I don't think I'd go with someone if I knew it'd be someone my parents didn't like though, I can tell who'd they'd like and who they wouldn't

I'm talking as if I regularly have girlfriends here

I'd like to think I'd trust their opinion, I also like to think I wouldn't introduce to an awful person in the first place.

My parents wouldn't be like that, they'd just be relieved i'd finally found someone, and not destined to die alone as i think :joker:

yikes, your mother sounds very selfish if she is like that, so basically she doesn't want to share your affection,

parents in general only want what's best for their children no matter how old their children are.

in the past, race, religion and career prospects where a deciding factor in your parents liking your other half or not.

now days, well in this country anyway the above issues are not that relevant,

parents still see a large age difference as an issue, general appearance and attitude towards the world, as possible red flags.
