Hard question.

So many depths of sadness.
I can't personally see it as beautiful or ugly.

Perhaps your own sadness can make someone else happy..so beautiful sadness.
Maybe I am on the wrong track:conf:

Its neither, one can break there heart on a dog walk when you see an animal in trouble more than they can watching 3 hours of Comic Relief. Its human, its normal and its inevitable.

hhhmmmmm  Well it's a negative emotion, sadness is unhappiness so If I were to pick either beautiful or ugly I'd have to choose the negative, Ugly

I think we only feel sad for beautiful things. that's why it's so confusing. In sadness, we are appreciating the loss of a beautiful thing, usually.

We mourn the loss of beautiful things. Things we love. And in doing so we are showing a certain kind of compassion that in itself is also beautiful. The mourning of beauty, and of beautiful things, is beautiful in and of itself./

I think that makes sadness beautiful.

Sadness is actually a compassion for beautiful things, and having compassion is beautiful, therefore sadness itself is beautiful.

does that make sense?

I'm really touched by this post. It's genuinely lovely. And it makes perfect sense. I want to say more about it but can't put it in words. (Unusual for me)

just to the left of sadness is, self pity!

No, beauty is never based on or around the suffering of others, and in this context is merely the romanticisation of sadness.

I don't agree that sadness in anyway means compassion for beautiful things, as for me it only points towards loss, either physical or mental. I've never been feeling really s**t about losing someone in my life, but at the same time thinking "wow, isn't this beautiful?"

Sadness is the vocalisation of pain and suffering, and there is nothing beautiful in that.

Sadness has a negative connotation and yet I can't say I've never found something that makes me sad beautiful.

It's natural to find beauty in things that evoke emotion.

Exactly my views. Glamourising it is just bad for everyone involved. Sadness is pain, and pain is not beautiful.

I agree with a lot of this post. Sadness, I think, isn't always beautiful but sometimes it can be poignantly beautiful. And sadness has evoked works of great beauty... poetry, prose, painting and music for instance.

i'm surprised people disagree.

of course its beautiful, your never see the sky or the sun in the way someone who is sad see's it.
its only when you see or feel sadness is when you really see beauty .
its when people see sadness is when they do good things

The most popular songs and movies have sad themes. if you asked people whats best the song that says i love you im so happy or the song of heartbreak. most people will chose the latter cause one is sappy the other is beautiful lol

Yes, sadness is very beautiful. Society today has a warped sense on what beauty is.

The best music comes from people who are in a really sad place.

..I agree that some of the most inspired and amazing/beautiful arts have come from pain/emotional suffering so I do see what you're saying Alex...but I also think that the reality of sadness is something quite different and has no beauty at all and is just basically sad/flat....

Another persons sadness could never be classed as ugly, but I wouldn't class it as beautiful either. Sad music can be beautiful, but if someone is sad, all I feel is pity.

I would agree with that JennyJ, 'Everybody Hurts', 'the drugs don't work', and 'Bittersweet Symphony' being some beautiful but sad songs. Brilliant group, The Verve, btw.

This was the first thing I thought of when I saw the question, and that film had quite a lovely message for how sadness can be quite beautiful and (more importantly) necessary in life.

I also agree that mourning can also eqaute to sadness being beautiful. However, there can be circumstances where sadness is just associated with sorrow and pity, so I think it just depends on why you're feeling sad and how it relates to certain people.
