View Full Version : How much 'pocket money' do you/did you get...
..it was just on BBC news that the average 'pocket money' is £12 per week which seems like a huge amount for parents to be able to afford and especially if they have more than one child...how much pocket money did you get and at what age did you start getting it/did you 'earn' it by doing chores etc/if you're a parent, how much do you give your child/children...?...

12.00! whatever happened to 50p!! I guess part of the 12.00 is used topping up mobile phones which every 8 year old seems to have now.

I actually don't have a clue, maybe maybe 2 quid when I was about 11 or 12, and I think about 20 quid a month when I got a bit older, don't think I actually got the money though, that was just the allowance if I needed it
and also if I was going on a school trip or something like that I was given a 10er or someth
had to do stuff for it mind
Never really got much pocket money as a kid but I got lucky at about 13 and landed a bit of weekend work as a lackey for a guy who would lay laminate flooring down for people. He would give me a straight up 20 quid and that was more than enough at that age. Every month I had to hand over one of my weeks earnings to my Mum and Dad which was fair enough.

What!!!! I can't believe you had to give some to your parents! No way would I have done that.

but during secondary school my older brother would give me extra money. he still does now lol
From 1st year in high school until I left I used to get £10 from my mum on a Monday morning for anything I needed during the week, like we had to pay £1 for netball twice a week then the youth club on a Wednesday night was £2 entry etc, then I would get £20 from my Dad on a Friday Night and £15 from my Mum on a Saturday, both of those were my proper pocket money for meeting up with School friends over the weekend and going somewhere like the pictures, ice skating etc or buying what I wanted.
That doesn't include my school money everyday, jeez looking back that was a lot.
When I was like 7-9 years old I'd get £2 to go down to the corner shop at the end of the road to buy sweets or a magazine but then my parents stopped it for whatever reason; fast forward to being at uni and they give me money every now and then to help me out because I don't have a student loan and a part time job only pays so much. Every summer in between uni years I work full time to save money up and then live off it over the next year though so I'm maybe about 75% self sufficient and need my parents to make up the rest which I think is okay... not ideal but they're happy enough to do that rather than me get into debt and they know that I don't piss my money away so it works.

Got mine according to what jobs I did in the house, so it varied depending how lazy I was. Got about 50p per job...but a bit more for longer jobs like cleaning the bathroom.
Got £1 per week off each grandparent too though
Oh I forgot to add to my post I never done any chores or anything like that to 'earn' my money.

I didn't really get pocket money but I was travelling 3 miles to school on my own every day from the age of 8 via the regular bus and going through town, I'd also buy my lunch in the shop every morning before school because my mother never did it for me or anything. Anyway I usually got £3 every morning I think, then when we changed to euros I still got €3/4 per day, but the bus fairs kept rising, so sometimes my mother would give me more, eventually I was getting €5-7 per day until I graduated, I obviously didn't get any money aside from that. :P
Adding: When I have kids I will probably give them small amounts of money regularly because I think it's so important to teach children the value of money and how to handle it and how much things are worth.

i never got a set amount of money each week or anything. If i asked for £5 or £10 here and there, randomly they would give it too me. I tried not to take the piss with them giving me money

my parents never 'did' pocket money, pretty much anything I wanted I got (obviously within reason).
