How far does human self-interest go?

Do you believe you should always look out for number 1 first and that all other concerns are secondary?

Do you feel you are just one cog of a massive instrument that is society and that everyone should seek to help everyone wherever possible?

Do you think there is a balance between selflessness and self interest?

If so where does it stop?

Do you feel good helping others?

Do you think society could benefit from being a bit more of one or the other?

Please discuss.

Bit heavy for a Sunday, but here goes I think it is good to think of others, there is a fine line though between helping and people taking advantage. We all need help at some time in our lives so hopefully if you were there for someone they will be there when you need it (doesn't always work like that though as some people are just takers).

We all need to take time to love ourselves a little more.
Then we pass that on to our family and friends.
So maybe a bit of self interest is a starting point.
I do believe you get pleasure from helping people that need it, perhaps it is self indulgence, or maybe just gratitude that you are in a better, safer place than others.

what do you give a man that has everything?

most of the time I am ashamed to be part of the human race.

I'm fighting a losing battle to stop becoming old jaded and cynical.... :(

I lost that battle years ago - and I'm only 28 :joker:.

On the subject: I put my family first, then myself, then a massive gap ------------- then my actual friends ------------------------------------ then generally "good" people, of whom there are few: I would help them if I could, but not to the detriment of myself ot my immediate family

The vast majority of people? I genuinely just can't be bothered any more.

There is nothing wrong with that viewpoint

most people are just out for themselves. i dont think there's any nice people or good people,, people are by nature selfish and feed their own needs. people just aint no good
we are no more than wild animals wearing clothes and pretending to be something were not . a tiger will eat you for dinner. the only difference between a tiger and human is the tiger dont wear denim lol except on a friday night maybe.

but knowing all that i do try and i do like to help people no matter how minor. its funny i was thinking the other day i help people all the time. what do i get back. err nothing not one would care if i was eaten by a white walker lol

in my dream we are all brothers and sisters no divides we look out for eachother as best we can. in reality its the reverse , so i say look out for yourself cause no one else will. but you dont need to be a selfish bar steward either. give a little love and if your hot female and desperate give it to me lol

Ah s*** I forgot all about this

I'll post my opinion after I've finished stuffing my face with Doritos. Gotta think of myself first.

The Ed Sheeran topic has reminded me I didn't post my opinion on this.

My philosophy in life is that we have all been put on this earth and nobody truly knows why we are here (no matter what a book says) so why the need to step on everybody's toes and make other people's lives miserable just to accrue as much personal gains as possible. Of course we do have to take care of ourselves and prioritise what we do but I take great satisfaction in helping people wherever possible and if you have the ability to do something to help someone out one day they may be able to return the favour.

I agree at our current stage of Human evolution we are still at heart quite self interested and self absorbed. We look at our immediate family only and other people for which we have self interest in.

We cocoon ourselfs in groups, tribes etc using Religion or Football to feel part of a bigger group. This is for self preservation only and if the right circumstances arrived we would ditch any/all of these groups again to preserve our own self interest.

To evolve beyond this we must truly accept that we are ALL connected and everyone is important and I mean everyone across all cultures ,races and religions.

Mankind needs to evolve beyond selfish self interest and care for everyone. From there we will learn to help one another and build a better world for everyone.

Capitalism is the main evil in this World as it feeds our self interest and desire to accumulate money/wealth to the detriment of others.

Hopefully in the future mankind will see this and begin to understand how human societies are littered with warfare, conflict etc and that change is required if we are going to truly suceed as a race.

We are all connected and should learn to find a way to live together peacefully.
