View Full Version : Are you getting your 7 a day?

Eating seven or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day is healthier than the five currently recommended and would prolong lives, researchers say.

A study of 65,226 men and women indicated the more fruit and vegetables people ate, the less likely they were to die - at any given age

I love those fruit/veg cards. Apparently it really should be 10 a day but when the guidelines went out it was suggested that 10 would be offputting and people wouldn't even try so they halved it the hope it would get people to eat their fruit and veg.

I have to be in the mood to eat fruit and veg, its so expensive, you'd have to be a millionaire to be able to afford to eat 7 or more portions a day..

But if it's serious then maybe they should stop subsidising fast food & candy and making up ridiculous prices for fruit. I saw 4 apples for £2 in Sainsburys the other day. What the holy ****?

A large part of the reason for this is not anything that's actually in the fruit and veg. Its because when people up their fruit and veg intake, they primarily replace bulky carbs like bread, pasta, rice and white potatoes.

That alone will increase your lifespan. These things are bas fir you and should be eaten in moderation - an occasional sandwich now and then or fajitas (mmmm) once a week isn't going to do much harm but the current western diet is something like 60% empty carb bulk. Makes you gain weight, messes up your blood sugar (which makes you feel weak and crave sugar, which in turn makes you gain yet more weight), major contributing factor in increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes...

So yeah, ditch some potatoes for some extra veg, have a "filling of your choice" salad instead of a sandwich, swap grain based snacks for fruit, and you will be much healthier. Just not necessarily because of the fruit and veg itself.

In an effort to be healthier I'm having six glasses of wine (it's just grapes...) and a chocolate orange.

I'm thinking back to student days and my instincts are telling me that a chocolate orange on top of 6 glasses of wine is probably a bad idea. A bad, bad idea.

They've actually been talking about 7-a-day for years... it's just not been written into the government's (absolutely rubbish) "healthy food breakdown". Which means nothing. Because it's... absolute rubbish.
