Novelist Sue Townsend, best known as the author of the highly successful Adrian Mole series of books, has died, a family friend has confirmed.

Townsend died at home on Thursday after a short illness.

The first of her comic series, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, aged 13 3/4, was published in 1982 and the eighth instalment, Adrian Mole: The Prostrate Years, was released in 2009.

Her other best-selling novels included The Queen and I.

She was sadly blind in her last years
[Townsend suffered from diabetes for many years, as a result of which she was registered blind in 2001]

On Radio 5 debate on her 9AM - 10AM
they said Adrian Mole should be part of course work
for kids that age.
She wrote that for adults when it first came out

So raging, I had her on my death list up until the 11th hour and then swapped her out. Rest in peace Sue Townsend
