Anyone else see the first episode of this new show ?
It's set in Victorian England and is a kinda' Gothic style Horror fantasy featuring Vampire's, Dr.Frankenstein and his 'monster', Dorian Grey and much, much more!
Just as a side note, the show was executive produced by John Logan and......... Sam Mendes of all people!
There's a great cast as well. Here's just a few of the people who are in it;
Eva Green is the main female character in the show who's a strong, take no sh*t , heroine type.
Josh Hartnett is an American 'hired gun' type of character.
Timothy Dalton plays Sir Malcolm who's a hardened African Explorer come investigator type.
Billie Piper plays an Irish immigrant who's come to London to escape her 'dark past'.
Rory Kinnear plays Frankenstein's Monster!!!!
..........and the list goes on.
I think it actually airs officially on the 11th of May but apparently it can be viewed online in the US on Showtime's Youtube Channel and on Showtime on Demand, Hulu and many other sites.
I'm in the UK so i downloaded it as it's very readily available online and i'm pretty sure you could also use something like Hotspot Shield if you're in the UK to change your ISP to an American one and then watch it somewhere like IGN.
I actually just tried switching on Hotspot Shield and it does indeed enable you to watch the full first episode (totally commercial free!) on IGN from the UK that way. Apparently you can use the Hola extension in your browser to watch it from the UK too.
Here's a link;
http://uk.ign.com/articles/2014/04/28/watch-showtimes-penny-dreadful-premiere-now
While it bordered on being a touch on the cheesy side at times i found it very entertaining all the same and will definitely watch a few more episodes before making a definitive judgement.
Overall i couldn't help thinking that it had a distinct feel of that 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' movie but i thought it wasfar better!
It's got a warning for 'Graphic Violence', 'Nudity' and 'Adult Themes' before the show just in case you were thinking of watching it with the kids!
The production values were excellent as were the creatures and the special effects were very nicely done too.
I'd definitely recommend giving at least the first episode a try if you're into this kind of thing. Anything but 'Dreadful' i thought.

I think it'll probably be right up your ally!
It was much better than i was expecting it to be from the very short write-up i'd read a few weeks back.
I think there's either 8 or 10 episodes in the series.
You're in the UK right ?
Do you have Dropbox ? If you have any trouble getting hold of the episode i could send it to you through Dropbox (i think anyway ? Only ever used it to send pdf's before).

What exactly is this about?
Apparently 'Penny Dreadfuls' (also known as 'Bloods') were inexpensive, serialized violent crime novels popularized in mid to late Victorian era England which were usually released in 8-page regular installments. They were known for their highly sensational horror/gore/slasher type themes and also featured fictional mythical beings such as Vampires, Werewolves and Ghouls and that kind of thing.
That sort of describes the whole feel of the show and the origin of the title but the show has a lot more to it besides these themes.
The main characters are (possibly retired ?) Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, played by Timothy Dalton, and his sidekick Vanessa Ives, played by Eva Green. They appear to live together (i think ?) but aren't related or in a relationship. It almost feels like she could be his niece or something.
Sir Malcolm is on a deeply personal quest to find his daughter Mina who, it would appear, has been kidnapped in deeply mysterious and as yet unexplained circumstances.
It also features well known fictional characters of the time like Victor Frankenstein (and his 'creation' of course!), Dorian Gray and we've also seen some rather interesting Vampire based creatures too.
Another one of the main characters is a bloke called Ethan Chandler, played by Josh Hartnett, who we first see working in one of those Wild West American touring shows they used to have back then. He's a trick-shot Gunslinger type of performer. He ends up being offered work by Sir Malcolm as his hired gun-toting muscle to assist him and Vanessa Ives in their search for his daughter.
That pretty much covers the basics of the show i think. It's definitely aimed at the adult audience with lots of 'F's' (the swear filter has gone into overdrive here these days!) and even a liberal smattering of the 'C' word in the second episode this week (i was quite pleasantly surprised by this, it being a Showtime/Sky TV production and all). There's also a certain amount of nudity as well (a nearly naked Billy Piper this week!), which is always good!
The first episode was entertaining but i was unsure how it would shape up but i personally thought this week's second episode (called 'Seance') was really excellent, highly entertaining viewing!!!
I'm a longtime fan of Eva Green anyway (i know there's a lot of people who aren't) but so far in this i think she's been absolutely brilliant!!!!
The look of the show, particularly some of the outdoor scenes depicting the (no doubt somewhat exaggerated for dramatic effect) smoggy, grey and eerie Victorian Gothic feel of 19th century London are really fantastic i think. The look of the busy London harbor/dock in episode two was as good as, if not better than, anything you see in big-budget Hollywood movies these days!
Hope that goes some way to giving you an idea of what the show's all about. I tried to explain it as well as i could without giving away any actual plot Spoilers etc..
I'm quite excited to see where it goes from here!

Did you watch episode 2 after Gypsy ?
I had to watch it a second time and i don't often do that with a TV show episode (unless the show has finished and i'm re-watching the whole thing over. I've watched the entire run of Battlestar Galactica 5 times over so far!!!).
I enjoyed it just as much on the second viewing. Only problem was that Billy Piper's terrible accent annoyed me even more the second time round. It's a shame because i normally quite like her.
We've gotta' wait until next bloody Sunday (the 25th) for the next new episode now though apparently!!! Gutted.

Give it a go!
By the end of episode 2 i couldn't wait for episode 3.
I think it would have been a good idea for them to have aired the first two episodes as a TV movie premier thing because while i enjoyed the first episode it's not until episode 2 that it really starts waking up........and it really does wake up!

I did, it's a great show and it's kinda like a well written fanfiction the way characters from separate gothic books encounter each other.
And yea Piper's accent was unnecessarily hard to make out at times. Hopefully she tones it down a bit. But that would be my only gripe with the show, and actually it's not that big a deal, I do love listening to accents so I got the majority of her lines.
Also I think London during that time is one of the greatest setting you could have for a story, it always seems like there are adventures and mysteries on every street corner. Anyway yep I'm looking forward to the next ep :D

I'd imagine it was probably a body double but regardless, Billy Piper redeemed her terrible accent with some splendid ass-thrust action this week. A bit of nudity from Miss Green wouldn't go amiss either!
I enjoyed the broadening of Frankenstein's story in this episode too, and the new weird evil boy is intriguing too (just who is this "Master" of whom he speaks ?). You just know he's gonna' be trouble that one!
The whole night trip to the Zoo was interesting too.
I'm loving the dialogue of the show too. It's wonderfully written. Frankenstein's 'first born' definitely stole the show for me this week!
Next week's episode can't come soon enough.:bouncy:

Yeah definitely, and it works so well since she started as such a sympathetic character in the first season. Brona's evolution into Lily is definitely one of my very favourite stories from the show.
I read an interview with Billie where she said that she knew from the very start what was going to happen with Brona which is pretty cool.

Dracula finally making an appearance (well, his voice at least)! That voice was creepy as hell. :flutter:
I like how they've introduced more elements from the Dracula story too with Renfield and a gender-swapped Dr Seward (and since Patti Lupone was in Season 2 as a different character I like how they made Seward an ancestor of her).
The production values continue to be on point, honestly one of the most well-made shows on TV by far.

Dr Sweet being Dracula was fully expected, but I'm glad he is. I've loved Christian Camargo as Sweet so far so I'm really looking forward to seeing more of him as Dracula.
Really excited to see where this Frankenstein / Jekyll / Lily story goes too and if they can actually bring back Brona's personality (I doubt it ). The Frankenstein / Lily scene outside Dorian's house was great.
I assume Hyde will enter the picture as a result of Jekyll's medication he uses to treat the violently insane.

Yeah that's true, so far she's only killed men who objectify and/or abuse women. I mean, I could still see her killing innocents without batting an eyelid but it's a nice touch that she does at least care for people who remind her of herself and the degradation she went through as Brona. Makes her a lot more interesting than she would have been if they just went full-on cliche supervillain with her and forgot about her motivations.
I'd like her to turn on Dorian at some point too.

Oh you know what the worst part for me was? When Lily tried to run and she fell because she was chained to the chair and Dorian laughed at her. He's a pig I hate him :fist:
Yeah, he's a prick. He's running scared because Lily's turned out to be more of an independent thinker and less of a toy that he anticipated.

he's really turning into that character from the books though, that actor plays him well

Keep forgetting it's a double-episode finale this week!
No news on Season 4 yet so I'm preparing myself for this to be the end until some news comes (:fc:)

Just watched the first episode of the finale.
Renfield is SO brilliantly eerie, he really creeps me out. I love how, since the start of the season, he's gone from mild-mannered secretary to raving madman. And as far as I'm aware he's an asylum patient in the Dracula novel so I like how he ended up in the asylum by the end of this episode. I also love how vampiric he now looks even though he actually isn't a vampire.
The smog that's engulfed London since Vanessa submitted to Dracula looks great and really elevates the whole gothic atmosphere and I like the concept of it essentially being a plague.
Billie Piper once again knocked it out of the park (and Victor let her go without giving her the serum, thank God for that!). Justine's death was sad (and Dorian was surprisingly tender about it), so I guess our theory about her killing him was wrong
A bit ominous that Vanessa didn't appear in the episode, but obviously we'll see her in all her Mother of Evil glory in the next one. I wonder if she's gone full evil.

I guess we now know why there's been no word of a Season 4 renewal yet. That was the finale of the show. As sad as that is since this is a phenomenal show, I had worried that it would be cancelled abruptly and end without a resolution but they were clearly writing this as an ending.
My jaw dropped when Vanessa died. I sort of expected it because I'd seen a headline on a site earlier saying something like "SPOILER dies!" and I read somewhere else about it feeling like a final episode so I figured it had to be a big chararcter and Vanessa is the main protagonist after all, but still when it happened I was still shocked. Vanessa Ives has to be one of the most tragic characters I've seen on screen and Eva Green has been phenomenal.
When she died, I started thinking that this must be the end because I can't picture a show without Vanessa but it was only when "The End" appeared on screen that it really hit that this was it. I'm just so glad they gave everything a real feeling of finality, even as early as the Lily / Dorian scene I was thinking how much it felt like they were ending the story because of how fitting it seemed (Lily finally leaving Dorian and that last shot of him standing there saying "I'll always be here").
I guess The Creature ends up alone again in the end since his wife told him to not return if he doesn't go to Frankenstein to bring their son back and he chose to bury him at sea instead. Really sad since he'd spent this season to reunite with his family but fitting for the character.
I wish the show continued on because there were so many other stories that could have been told and to suddenly have it all end and wrap up did feel a little quick and rushed in places but it was apparently John Logan's decision for this season to be the end so I'm just glad the show got a real ending. It's been amazing, I'm definitely gonna miss it.

I watched the finale last night Lostie
Ugh I don't know how I feel about it all, everyone ended up more miserable than they'd ever been. Not one of them got a halfway happy ending, Vanessa died oh and you know what annoyed most of the whole thing? Lily and Ethan never crossed paths, I'd been waiting for that to happen ever since Frankenstein took her!
I suppose it was fitting really for the tone the whole of the show was anyway, there wasn't really going to be a happy ending but I thought maybe atleast one of them might get that
Anyway, over all a brilliant show so beautifully shot, great acting and of course Eva Green was the absolute star of the whole thing

Yeah I know what you mean. I'd say Ethan and Malcolm got the closest to "happy" (though it was more than bittersweet) since they stick together at the end but all the other main characters just ended up alone (or in Vanessa's case, dead). But yeah, for me that sort of thing works for this sort of show but it totally makes sense how that might not be satisfactory to all.
And I agree about Ethan and Lily. To be honest, as much as I'm glad that the ends were tied up and everything had a conclusion, I do feel like it was a bit out of nowhere and rushed and plenty more could have happened in between had they continued for a little longer. And especially with a show like this that draws from gothic literature, they had so many more potential stories to tell. I know John Logan wanted to end it now so it seemingly wasn't a case of it being cancelled and him rushing an ending, but it still felt a little that way if I'm honest
And then there's characters like Seward and Catriona who we only met this season and I could have seen being permanent fixtures within the group had the show continued. Catriona especially was only in like two / three episodes which is a shame, I thought the show would go on and we'd get more from her and learn more about her past.
Still, it was of course a beautiful final episode and having it end with Vanessa dying and a voiceover from the Creature felt right to me. I just wish we had more until we got there and more of a build to the ending.

Oh and I loved the special opening titles of the finale (another reason I figured it was the last episode when watching it ), they were stunning.

IT'S (sort of) RETURNING!!
A new series called Penny Dreadful: City of Angels has been ordered, but seems to not be a continuation of the original story.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, the new series will explore a mix of the supernatural and the reality of the time period.
