Yes I recall you mentioned it. I am giving it a go as I need something good for Tuesday. Im a sucker for a good pillage.
It's in my top 3 favourite current TV shows, Season 1 is good and Season 2 is even better
I started watching it then forgot about it, which is surprising given how hot the lead Viking is!
I'll definitely give it another go at some point though.

On the plus side as I was up in the 500's of my sky channels I found Eden on 533 and they had a night of tornado progs which I have taped.
Coincidentally as I sat down to watch the Call center last night I said to small LT girl child "I wish there was something on tonight about tornadoes"!

Bit of a bump but I'm halfway through Season 3 of this now. I watched Season 1 a while ago but fell behind on 2 and 3 so I've been catching up to get ready for Season 4 next month.
Absolutely loving it, and it's one of the most visually striking shows on TV. And that opening title sequence has to be my favourite intro to a show. :clap1:

Lostie!
22-01-2016, 02:10 PM
Season 4 is going to be 20 episodes apparently, rather than the usual 10.
Niamh.
22-01-2016, 02:10 PM
Really? ohhhhh that's brilliant news
Lostie!
22-01-2016, 02:17 PM
And it's a good sign for the show too, they clearly have enough faith in it to double the length of the season. :)
One of the things I love about this show is how it incorporates more mythological elements (like the Wanderer, the various prophecies, etc) but subtly and ambiguously so the show doesn't delve into being full-blown fantasy.
I love the Seer, I look forward to whenever he pops up.
Niamh.
22-01-2016, 02:19 PM
Oh he's really creepy though. Lagatha is my favourite
Lostie!
22-01-2016, 02:24 PM
Oh yeah Lagertha's great.
Siggy's been one of my favourites throughout the series too and I'm not yet over her dying. Why didn't mysterious Keamy from Lost help her?! :fist: :bawling:

Yeah I finished episode 5 of season 3 last night. :)
Yeah, her and Rollo were a really nice unexpected pairing. I've loved Rollo's development, I hated him at first and now I'm feeling sorry for the guy.
Also about this latest episode, King Ken Barlow's Son is quite a bastard. Having his son massacre a village including children. :omgno: :nono:

How do you feel about Floki, Niamh? :)
I fluctuate between finding him amusing and annoying.

His voice makes me want to throw things  I really dislike him, more so by the end of the last series too

Episode 6 of Season 3. :clap1:
I already knew about Floki killing Athelstan and Judith's disfigurement but seeing them play out was still really powerful. Judith's torturing was actually one of the most uncomfortable scenes the show's done imo (and I mean that as a compliment ).
Ragnar's eulogy for Athelstan. :bawling: </3
Will.
23-01-2016, 12:59 PM
I've seen the add for Vikings whilst watching all the Ancient Aliens and conspiracy theory documentaries.
Is it worth a watch and if so should I start from season 1? :)
Lostie!
23-01-2016, 03:11 PM
If you're thinking about watching it, definitely start from Season 1.
Lostie!
27-01-2016, 03:12 PM
Finally got fully caught up last night. Absolutely brilliant. :clap1:
Just one thing is bugging me though, Ragnar converting to Christianity so he could be reunited with Athelstan after death. So, he suddenly cares more about seeing Athelstan in the afterlife more than his family? What about his daughter who died years ago?
I liked Athelstan but I think they overdid Ragnar's love for him at this point.
Niamh.
27-01-2016, 03:14 PM
Yeah I agree Lostie ^

27-01-2016, 03:21 PM
Unless the whole baptism was all just part of the plan to get into France when he faked his death. I mean, the first thing he did when jumping out of the coffin was kill a holy man, he can't really think he'd still end up in Heaven with Athelstan?
I dunno, I just like to think he'd care more about the possibility of seeing his dead daughter again than Athelstan.
Niamh.
27-01-2016, 03:22 PM
Oh hang on a second yeah, It's been ages since I watched all that I forgot that bit
Yeah, that was just for his plan I think f/

So excited for this and all those episodes too
Lostie!
19-02-2016, 09:51 PM
I just watched the first episode. Loved it, so glad this is back. :clap1:
I'm glad they haven't brushed over Ragnar's deteriorating health and had him suddenly recover between seasons. I have to admit I found Aslaug's obvious annoyance that he'd woken up quite funny. I'm here for this new opportunistic, ambitious Aslaug vying to rule Kattegat, that's gonna be interesting.
Lagertha castrating that guy. :clap1: Wish someone would kill Horik's annoying son though.
John Kavanagh finally in the opening credits . The Seer's been a favourite of mine since the very start so it's good to see he'll likely be prominent this season.
Speaking of, I really like the updated opening sequence. They didn't need to change the whole thing because Vikings has one of the best intros on TV but I like the little new additions. Updated but still retaining the epicness of the original. :clap1:
Rollo D:. I think he's past the point of redemption now...
One thing though, I'm confused about how much time has passed. Some of the kids look older than I recall them being last season, but they only just returned from Paris and Ragnar only just woke up so years can't have passed. Maybe the kids got older last season and I just didn't notice.
Niamh.
25-02-2016, 12:06 PM
Only just watched the first episode last night.
I still like Rollo best  Ragner is an annoying twat imo Good on Rollo for helping the French keep their home from those invaders :fan:

They even killed the kid though. :worry:
I'm all for the French defending themselves tbh but Rollo's still nothing but a serial traitor. :fist: (But Clive Standen is quite beautiful so I'll give him that ).
I thought the Rollo / Gisla scenes were funny, her ranting at him and then being outraged when he fell asleep.
(I didn't use tags now because I believe the episode is already available in the UK on Amazon.)

Rollo is such a hero and defender of the little people :flutter:
I wasn't defending the Vikings, just voicing my disapproval of the kid being murdered (although I suppose if they're gonna take a kid on a raid then that's their lookout ) and pointing out how fickle Rollo is. :hmph:
And Rollo's no better than the rest of them (he's actually proven time and time again to be one of the more aggressive and dangerous), he's not turned on the Vikings out of any sense of moral decency. And he forced himself on a woman in an early episode :idc: (so I suppose he's made a tiny bit of personal development by not doing the same to Gisla, still a terrible human but progress is progress I suppose :hee:).
But yeah, I was definitely siding with the French during the Paris battle last season.
What's your view on Aslaug atm? People seem to be hating on her for being sly etc but I'm really liking these developments with her, I'm all here for her trying to take the throne of Kattegat. :joker:
Niamh.
25-02-2016, 12:35 PM
I like her more now she got a bit of a backbone tbh and I my dislike of Ragnar probably is also a factor to why I like this new fiesty Aslaug  Ragner and his stupid facial expressions and drooling over young girls in front of her makes me want to stab him in the eye, but I think her getting that girl was a way of distracting him
Lostie!
29-02-2016, 07:24 PM
Just watched the latest episode.
Helga and Floki's daughter dying. :bawling: Poor Helga, everything possible is going horrible for her right now. </3
I knew I recognised that French woman who Count Odo whips (yeah that sounds so odd), it's Karen Hassan (Lynsey from Hollyoaks). I don't watch HO but I know the actress and partway through the episode it clicked where I remembered her face from.
Niamh.
03-03-2016, 12:48 PM
Watched it last night Lostie
I knew that girl had an Irish accent, every sentence started off Irish ended french lol
Do you reckon Helga and Ragnar will get together? Ugh I really hate Ragnar. Slapping his wife like that and talking about her not being Loyal, I forgot only the women have to be Loyal.............asshole :idc:

Oooh that would be interesting, I hadn't considered that!
I just want Helga to have some happiness, poor woman. :bawling:
And yeah, him slapping Aslaug took me by surprise (I mean, she was being callous about Athelstan's murder so I'd understand being angry but no need to get violent :nono:).
Bjorn annoys me a tad. I don't even know why, he just irritates me. Both Bjorns did, actually.
Niamh.
03-03-2016, 01:02 PM
I don't mind older Bjorn but younger Bjorn really annoyed me
I got the vibe that Ragnar was interested in Helga because he was going on about her being a loyal wife and slamming his own wife for being disloyal

Oh, interesting catch, I never made that connection!
Apparently, Floki's punishment is based on a punishment Loki received in the mythology so that's a nice touch. I guess that's what Ragnar meant when he told Floki "I'm sure you'll appreciate it, I got it from the Gods".

28-12-2016, 05:36 PM
Just caught up on the new episodes. I'm enjoying it but I have a couple of issues. I think they've messed up with Lagertha by having her blaming Aslaug solely for what happened with her and Ragnar and for shooting her in the back. Just did the character a massive disservice imo. :idc:
Also it's still bugging me how Bjorn hasn't once been shown to acknowledge baby Siggy's death. I'd have found it much more satisfying for him to kill Aslaug for that tbh.
I reckon Jonathan Rhys Meyers will be playing either an older Alfred or Magnus, not sure which. I was thinking Alfred but I can't help but think an older, vengeful Magnus will return after another time jump so that's a real possibility too.
And with the ending of the last episode, I'm convinced more than ever that Ragnar's dying this season. They alluded perfectly to how it happened in the sagas, Aelle executed Ragnar in a snake pit and his sons killed Aelle in return. I hope they do stick to having Aelle kill him because they nicely foreshadowed it way back in the first season when Aelle made a speech of exacting revenge on Ragnar (and the scenes of him throwing someone in a snake pit).
(That spoiler mentions something from the original stories that may or may not happen in the show :spin:)
Lostie!
29-12-2016, 04:53 PM
The new episode :clap1: :clap1:
Even though I figured we were heading to this, Ragnar actually dying still feels weird, it's odd to imagine the show without him. Back when I first started the show and read about his death in the legends I thought perhaps the show would end with that, killing off your central character when it isn't even the final season is a big move (especially so since Travis' performance is so popular). I love that they did it and didn't cop out though.
Ragnar telling Ivar to go after Ecbert was surprising. I assume this is retribution for the settlement Ecbert had slaughtered? Speaking of him, I think Linus Roache gave my favourite performance of the episode when Ecbert was watching Ragnar's execution. If Ragnar's sons do indeed go after him soon, I reckon he'll accept death at this point.
Lostie!

The finale was brilliant, one of my favourite episodes of the show :clap1:
I know the show's never been shy about killing people but 4B really ramped it up. Aslaug, Ragnar, Aelle, Helga, Ecbert and Sigurd all in this back half is pretty significant even by this show's standards
4A was probably my least favourite run of the show but the second half definitely pulled me back. Some blips like the business with Lagertha and Aslaug and that random Bjorn / Astrid thing but definitely a big return to form on the whole. And I love that this show is so willing to massively shake up the status quo regularly. With Ragnar and Ecbert dying especially, Season 4 felt like the end of an era so it's exciting to think about where Season 5 will go.
And JRM is finally here :clap1:

Helga dying though :( I was more sad about that than any of the other main characters dying. Was there some significance with the sword at the end of the episode, they seemed to linger on it

Yeah, not many left now!
I think so about Lagertha too, especially with the route they've been taking Lagertha down lately. And in season 4 the Seer flat-out told her that she'll be killed by a son of Ragnar so they're already sowing the seeds. :worry:

That was honestly my first thought when he said it  Or maybe another twist on the words with a son of Ragnar being a cause of her death (perhaps unintentionally) without directly killing her.
Speaking of the originals being wiped out, I just realised the only ones from the early days still around are Lagertha, Rollo, Bjorn, Floki and the Seer.

oh wow is that it? I still see Bjorn as not an original though as he was a kid in the first couple of seasons, Man - Bjorn is like a new character really
maybe Astrid will kill her in order to get Bjorn, so indirectly him killing her?

Yeah I nearly forgot to list Bjorn, he feels like a season 2 addition doesn't he? It's easy to forgot the daughter Gyda ever existed, feels like a lifetime ago (and considering how many years have passed in the show it sort of was ). I wonder if she'd have been one of Lagertha's shieldmaidens had she lived longer.
Ugh, Astrid. I hope Lagertha kills her :idc:

^ I don´t think any of the cast is very heroish though?
As they all seem to like a bit of slaughtering and killing. Which i guess in those times has kind of been like a normal everyday thing, like washing, eating, sleeping, going to the bathroom and working for example.

ah yeah but there are, I guess you could say some "anti heros" and those two are seen as straight up baddies

Season 5 premieres November 29th. I thought it would be earlier, like September  Not sure about the UK release on Amazon yet but I'd assume it's not far behind.
Also, new trailer (looks brilliant)

So based on those last scenes in the trailer with Floki looking at the volcano, people think he'll discover Iceland in season 5 and I just found out that in real life the first Norseman to discover Iceland was called Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson. Really cool way of tying his story into real history if they do that.

Season 6 will be the final season. Makes sense, considering the show has spanned a good 20+ years at this point there had to be an end in sight in the near future. I haven't even watched season 5 so a big binge is in order soon even though I know almost everything that happens

So i'm on Season 4 now
Aslaug's death was underwhelming and abrupt.. they've been building her up for ages as a major antagonist and that was it for her...? And Lagertha killed her? Im- :skull:
I'm still enjoying it and LOVED the Paris storyline... the mess with Lynsey from HO and Count Odo was a hoot.. but still missing Siggy and now crazy Kwenthrith  although I LOVE Judith
Ragnar was great but since he got hooked on drugs from that Asian servant he's been deranged and obsessed with Aethelstan... over it.

Oh wow on Ragnar's death episode
They really had to torture him for like half an hour....? I couldn't watch most of it cos I hate all the gore
Ready to see Aelle killed, he's annoyed me since S1... even though I was over Ragnar by the end of his run as much as he was over his self :skull: .

Anyone watching this on Prime ??
Presumably the next batch of episodes will be available soon ..
Trouble is I’ve forgotten where I’m up to now .. they seem to be showing them in small batches rather than one series at a time ... unless I’m getting totally confused

Set years after Vikings, the end of the Viking Age draws nears as England stands against them. After the death of King Edward the Confessor, three lords make claim to the English throne. Leif Erikson has led Greenlanders across the North Atlantic. He is loyal to his family, but has trouble with his father, Erik the Red. Freydís Eiríksdóttir is his half-sister. A sexual assault by Christian Vikings has made her anti-Christian and she becomes the leader of the Old Norse religion against rising Christianity in Scandinavia, and will look for a new home for her people. She is romantically drawn into a relationship with Torsen, a Christian Viking from a royal family. Torsen is part of a battalion that is being assembled by King Harald Hardrada to avenge the massacre. He is guided by Alienor, his queen and Earl Colby, an Anglo-Saxon counselor.
