A governor who is said to have orchestrated a plot by Muslim extremists to take over a group of schools believes children should not be allowed to swim during Ramadan because it may 'break their fast'.
Tahir Alam, the chairman of Park View School in Birmingham, said there should be sensitivity during the Islamic holy month because pupils could accidentally ‘swallow water.’
The suspected ringleader of the 'Trojan Horse' operation also said Muslim women and girls have an 'obligation' to cover their bodies after denying claims he made schoolchildren wear headscarves.
He describes himself as a 'conservative Muslim', but says allegations of Islamification and extremist teachings at the schools in Birmingham are false.

I remember doing that once just to try it. All the floats had little bite marks taken from them so me (being about 5 or so) thought that they must taste nice. I was very mistaken.

I guess because its topical, the chap who said this is in the news already, its slightly preposterous and the fact that children really should not be exposed to religion in any way shape or form apart from in a history lesson.

Religion has no place in schools unless it's for educational purposes. I'm all for learning about religions but when a religion is part of the school's DNA then it'll ultimately effect what is being taught.
Look at America, there's a lot of schools whose curriculum is shaped by the fact that they are Christian schools and at the end of the day it's the kids that are missing out.

Trust the Daily Mail to throw up a story like this, I think stories like these are meant to enrage Non Muslims to the point of apoplexy.
I mean not eating or drinking (water) in Summer ALL day whilst the Sun is up is for Muslims in the UK probably quite dangerous and should be ignored on Health grounds.
The Food well you could probably eat enough before sunrise to keep you going to sunset BUT not drinking any fluids all day is not advisable from a medical perspective as dehydration, heatstroke, sunstroke are all risked by this course of action.
Utter lunacy, to put yourself and your children and aging parents at serious medical risk in order to adhere to a ridiculous nonsensical fairy story passed down thousands of years ago...
It makes me apoplectic just thinking about it.

I agree. Religion in schools and colleges causes more trouble than enough. If you want to learn more about your own religion that's fine, but it should be done in your own time. That's not to say that I don't think religion shouldn't be studied. How can you say for you the the Bible/Torah/Qu'ran (et al) is nonsense if you haven't read it?
I worked in an east London FE college when I left uni. It was completely secular, and yet religion was still disruptive, with Muslims demanding prayer rooms and the Christians saying, if they're having prayer rooms we want a chapel... It's a place of learning, and that's all it should be.
I also think that the families of the children fasting for Ramadan should make the call whether they swim or not.

Not sure whether you're aware of this, what with religion only starting on Blairs first election victory, but religion may have played a part in schools before that.

A lot of Muslim kids I knew when growing up didn't know how to swim at all. There was a reason they told me but I can't remember as it was so far back.
