The police are not bringing charges. There's nothing to discuss.

How old is this for goodness sake again, over 40 years ago. I think as Livia said, there is little or even nothing to discuss as to this really.

So let me get this straight. She waited until this man, this alleged rapist had gone to become a cabinet minister before she came forward with her allegation of rape.

Well what a joke, no one will possibly believe this women, in fact I hope she gets charged with wasting Police time and/or referred to a psychiatrist as she is obviously nuts.

I also hope any newspaper stupid enough to run with a story like this gets sued to hell over it.

Another out for compensation by the looks of it. Reporting it 45 years later

I reckon there will be no end to these historic rape claims.

It was a different climate then, you were not believed..or of course you were asking for it.

45 days ago or 45 years, rape is rape and stays with you until you die.

The fact that this minster is being investigated seems to gave given her the courage to come forward.
Shame that even now the general consensus is that these victims are only out for compensation.

Yeah, I agree it must have been an awful time to be a woman and a victim of such a crime. The problem is though how can you possibly prove it this late on?

Very difficult to prove.

But she may feel better for at least naming him.

Totally agree, justice should e served whether it is an historic case or not.
Excellent point.

No........ If she was raped or assaulted then surely she must come forward at the time, otherwise nobody will believe her and her assailant will never be brought to justice.

The best she can do now is hang onto the coatails of somebody else's allegations and hope her story adds weight to the initial allegations.

This cannot be the way forward especially if the allegations are false.

Very uncomfortable about this whole current situation

The police are taking no more action. If he's named now it'll open up all kinds of civil action. The papers are gossip-mongering as usual.

Yes, it is about the they changed the law, no person accused of rape should be named unless founds guilty.
I realise it will put some people off reporting it, but they have to find a better balance.

Perhaps in this day and age it is well worth reporting, the police look on it more seriously now.
Back in the day you were more likely to be thought of as leading them on.

It's impossible to enforce in the modern media, though... People don't rely on a morning paper for their news any more, or any major media source that it would be easy to take civil action against. If it's a celebrity or someone high profile involved, the information will eventually leak anonymously online and then be passed around on the grapevine.

You see this already with minor cases where the person can't legally be named. Remember the Ryan Giggs adultery thing when his name was being legally withheld? All of the newspaper headlines just had a blanked out figure and no names, just "a well known premiership footballer". EVERYONE online knew it was Ryan Giggs.

Likewise, when the news first broke of an "elderly celebrity" being arrested as part of Yewtree, "the internet" had figured out that it was Rolf Harris long before the press was allowed to name him. Purely from the location, his vague age, and his celebrity status.
