'We look like a right pair of woofters': Sky football presenter forced to apologise after Terry Venables' homophobic joke about picture of him holding hands with Brian Clough
Venables was being interviewed on Sky show Goals on Sunday
He told an anecdote about how the late Brian Clough held his hand
It happened at the 1991 FA Cup final at Wembley
But Venables then appeared to make a homophobic joke about it

Venables is a different generation. I'm not excusing homophobic comments, but I seriously doubt it was meant as a slight on the gay community.

I rekon if he had said like a couple of gays it sounds worse
what exactly is wrong with saying they looked like a couple of gay men as they do
its not as if he was saying "yeah we looked gay and that is really bad"
fear of blame again
Can't say stuff like that on tv anymore Terry, it's right that he apologised

no, lets just stick with listening to american artists telling us about how they are going to bitch slap some N1gga hoe and watch them degrade women on youtube and feel like we have left the dark ages behind..

Well that's not really the same thing, anyone can upload anything to youtube and people will only watch what they choose to watch on there, it's slightly different to someone coming out with an unexpectedly homophobic remark on a Sunday morning show on a major tv channel

why is it homophobic which infers a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality?
he was rightly saying they looked like a couple of gay men but he was not stating that there was anything wrong with being gay as far as i can see?
he said it in a light hearted manner and there was no malice intended
saying someone looks gay is not a crime
I imagine the word 'woofter' was the problem here, I'm sure he didn't mean to cause offence but it's better to be safe than sorry and apologise for it

It has always been a pretty inoffensive alternative to poofter
I wish that spineless sheppard had told his metrosexual 20 something producer to go feck himself

Unless you're gay I don't think you really get to say what is and isn't offensive to homosexuals, LT.
I personally hate ****/woofter/etc. They're always said with deridation.

In this instance he did not say it with malice if you watch he said yes they looked like they were gay, which they did, the degradation is only in those who somehow take offense at anyone saying anyone is gay
All this does is reduce homophobia to a trivial thing - it works against.
