Older footy fans may remember the time about 2 years after SAF first arrived at Man U he ruthlessly axed their bright young star and fan favourite Norman Whiteside who was really quick, talented popular but spoilt and intransigent (and still youngest ever player to play in WC). It sent shockwaves through football.

SAF sent out a message noone was safe, things were going to change (ie end of drinking culture) and the ruthless Fergy era would begin in earnest. Bryan Robson had to shape up as captain.

Would axing Rooney after next season be LVG's equivalent moment? Rooney is only still at MU due to £300 k a week wimpy Moyes contract. RVP will be LVG's talisman, and not just for dutch reasons.

Van Gaal plays different formations. Would be shocked to see him sell Rooney. Rooney v RVP for the main striking role if Van Gaal intends to primarily play 4-3-3.
