I think the Conservatives will come through, they will need to throw everything at it however.

UKIP taking their first seat in the Commons will be scary enough, but if the people of Newark elect this ****ing bigot I will be disgusted

Every party will be throwing everything into this by election. I wouldn't be at all surprised if UKIP took it. They're on a roll and people get the impression that a sea change is in operation. We'll see... it'll be interesting to watch.

I agree it could be a close call.
All attention will be centred on it so in light of all that has happened in these elections we have just had, I guess the media will be clamouring all around UKIP again.
It will be a virtual waste of time for Labour and the Lib Dems in this by election.
The media will help create to further turn this into a circus and a life or death battle between the Conservatives and UKIP.
I really hope UKIP miss out.

I think the Conservatives will hold onto the seat as they have a massive majority at present.
I do think UKIP will come second and take significant votes from the Conservatives.
Tories have it in the bag

Depending on the swing away from the Tories this will still be treated as a moral victory for UKIP

I want the Conservatives to win this,no way do I want a UKIP MP this close to a general election now and really I would say only UKIP could beat the Conservatives here at this time.
Result not expected till 3/4am, Andrew is not happy
Good old Andrew tearing Nige a new one
Wish Nige would stop calling UKIP the 'People's Army'

Actually, this is a rather good result for the Conservatives, UKIP got 2nd but with all the hype they have had, even in this by election they still barely reached the point where they would only get a few MPs in Westminster.
With recent results of elections this should have been a classic opportunity for UKIP, in a single by election too, to at least in effect bring this set to marginal status, they haven't.
Although this result says little as to the 2015 election,it may be saying that seats for the Conservatives are not necessarily at great risk from UKIP that might have been, also that UKIP may have a struggle to hold momentum in a full Nationwide general election.
Coming 2nd from virtually nowhere is a good result,no doubt, however this performance by UKIP in this seat where a disgraced MP has had to go didn't live up to expectations.
I expected to see a UKIP narrow win or the Conservative majority to be down to a max of around 2000.
Neither came about,in the end a reasonably comfortable win for the Conservatives.
Yep a good night for the Tories, they'd have expected to face a lot of competition in a by election of this nature but they've come through it fairly comfortably. Considering that UKIP were always gonna gain massively from their performance here in 2010 they could always claim pretty much any result as a victory though
