Don't know if this has already been posted but...

The man with the smile everyone’s talking about is back for the new series of Big Brother, presenting the show’s Bit On The Side. TV Choice met up with Rylan Clark over a coffee to find out all the goss, how tough it is in the Big Brother house and whether he’d ever go back in…

Do you think Big Brother: Power Trip will bring out the worst in people?
It could. That’s the thing with power. It could bring out a nasty side.

Will we viewers be involved in Power Trip?
More than ever! Digitally, interactively, viewers are going to be more in control than they’ve ever been. That’s really exciting - I’m a viewer too, so to be more in control is what we want.

Do you meet the housemates before the show?
I meet them two or three days before when I do their interviews for Bit On The Side but me and Emma are viewers, we love the show, so we don’t want to know anything unless we need to, because we like to be surprised, shocked and to see it unfold in front of us. Emma meets the housemates as they walk on to the catwalk! What I’ve found is that their VT (video) and them are like two separate people. Nine times out of 10 the real person is who we actually want.

Do people make real lasting friendships in the Big Brother house?
Gareth our psychologist says if you make one good friend from Big Brother you’re lucky. When you’re in Big Brother you think you’ve got 10 good friends, but the thing is, how are you going to feel sleeping next to someone who might take your power away? At the end of the day it’s a fight for survival, whoever’s the last one standing takes home the £100,000. You don’t become an overnight celebrity from being in Big Brother any more, and they’re all very aware of that. Don’t think you’re going to go in for two weeks and come out like Alison Hammond and be a presenter on This Morning, that don’t happen no more.

So which good friends did you come away with?
I was so lucky. I’ve got Claire Richards (get dat Steps promo), Gillian Taylforth, Tricia Penrose, Frankie Dettori and Razor Ruddock. We’re all so close. I was ringbearer at Razor’s wedding, Claire’s like my sister, Razor’s my dad, Gillian’s me nan – I still call her Kathy Beale – Frankie’s like my dirty older uncle, for my birthday he bought me a whip and an ice bucket with a horse bit. I have Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt to thank for that, because where they created such a divide, we became a lot closer.

You were due to be a non-celeb housemate back in 2007, before your X Factor appearance. What happened?
I was a housemate in hiding, but it got leaked to the papers, and back then if you got found out you didn’t go in. I was a bit gutted but it’s all gone full circle. At the time I couldn’t understand it, but now I know why it happened – six years later I go in Celebrity Big Brother, win it, and now I’m presenting it. I wouldn’t have had none of this if I’d gone in then.

Is the key to presenting it to be a fan?
One hundred per cent. Every single person who works on Big Brother – not just me and Emma – is a fan of the show. Every single one of them will be like, ‘You’ll never guess what so-and-so did last night.’ We talk like we’re at a ladies’ lunch, down Prezzo having a coffee! We all love it. I feel like I’ve been there from Day One because I’ve grown up with Big Brother and I’m such a fan. When they talk about stuff from five years ago, I’m in on that conversation because I remember it.

How difficult is it in the house?
I needed it because the point when I walked in (straight after the X Factor), I was the most talked about person in the country, and I hadn’t stopped – I hadn’t slept, I was up for 24 hours day in day out, I didn’t know my name or where I was or what was going on. Big Brother was exactly what I needed – I went in the most famous house in Britain to get away from everyone! In there, everyone was even, there were no camera phones, no people treating you different, everyone was just equal and it was the break I needed. It sorted my head out. If I hadn’t done Celebrity Big Brother, I don’t know where I would be now, because I think I would have burnt myself out to a point where I would have ********d myself up. That’s why I’m loyal to Big Brother, I’ve no plans on ever leaving because they sorted me out, they gave me my job, and they changed my career, and changed my life and I’ll never leave unless I’m sacked!

Do people spend hours in the diary room?
Yes! I loved the diary room. My longest was two and a half hours. In real life, it’s a person, in a booth, pressing a button and saying, ‘Hello Rylan’, but when you’re in there Big Brother is the voice in your head. You’ll never be able to talk to anyone like you talk to Big Brother because you’re talking to yourself, ultimately. Big Brother gives no advice, no emotion, just reiterates what you are saying.

Would you ever go back in to the Big Brother house?
I’d love to. I had the best time in there. Part of me is like, yes, put me in there for a year, but another part is worried - what if it’s not as good as it was the first time round? It worked for Brian Dowling – he went in twice, had a great experience second time round and won it again. I think I’d just be gutted if I didn’t win it!

What’s your advice to the housemates?
Enjoy every second. You’ve joined an elite group of people who’ve been able to live in that house so don’t waste the opportunity, whether you win or not – and make sure you fight to the *********g end!
