On reflection Casillas should have won.
Since its inception in 1956 only one goalkeeper has won one of the Ballon D'Or awards: Lev Yashin of the Soviet Union in 1963. He won the Ballon d’Or and whilst he was undoubtedly a fine goalkeeper it does seem incredulous that there have been none worthy since. A GK won the women's.
As great as the Ronaldos, Messis et al are I am a bit miffed that goalkeepers are frequently overlooked. They are the cinderellas of football. When everything is going well praise is heaped on the strikers, when there's defeat or a bore draw the GKs and defence is slated. Iker Casillas contributed as much to RM as Ronaldo. Thibaut Courtouis has had a fantastic loan season at AM albeit a sad CL ending and rival Petr Cech has been a marvel at Chelsea.
