Do you people work for Sky Sports news? (Let's blame either the manager or the best player to make a story)

Some people (like you) wanted rid of Sir Bobby Robson after Euro 88, two years later we got to a penalty shoot out away from the World cup final playing quality football.

Do you really believe that second goal was Woy's fault? because without that second goal this thread wouldn't happen, so I can only think that you think it was only Woy's fault for that goal.

It's the managers job to select the World Cup squad
to select the starting 11 players
to decide the formation we play
to decide the tactics and style of football we play
to ensure a group of individuals can play successfully as a team
to individually instruct players on their role in the team
to get the absolute best out of his players
to make integral decisions throughout the matches
etc
etc

Wasn't exactly his fault for the second goal but the fact that that is the argument for him, when we shouldn't be in a position two games into the World Cup that conceding a goal can knock us out, is stretching it

The manager is undoubtedly the most important individual and will always and fairly be the one to take a lot of the blame for poor performances and losses as ultimately it's his vision for how England can be success and he failed terribly

And I don't buy the argument that our players aren't good enough - that's a load of rubbish when they're competing in the toughest league in the world when most opposition in the World Cup have players not even starting for their lowly clubs. It's the way they play that's vital.

Tactics my arse, the only tactics you need is to go on to the pitch with the right attitude, the attitude to give it your best. you cant ask for anything more then that.

If the players don't know how to play football tactically by this stage of their careers then they shouldn't be there in the first place.

I saw a great attitude from the players against Italy they looked like they were enjoying it and with a tad more luck we might of just got something out of that game but it wasn't to be.

Against U r gay we looked a yard of the pace, maybe fatigue from the Italy game or even the long flight across Brazil, but the effort was still there and showed character to get back in the game after going behind and if our two centre halfs hadn't have switched off for a split second we may have even gone on to win that.

You completely lost me here

Roy's job isn't just to turn up and say "go on lads, give it ya all!" after naming 11 players

Look at Spain's 4 year domination, nobodies talking about the great attitude the players had. It's the iconic style of play that'll go down in the history books.

Agreed, Roy H imo probably spent too much energy fostering team spirit and not enough on tactics and strategy. We now realise the Man U players hated each other and Fergie, most have fallen out (SAF with Roy K, Becks, Jap Staam, Blanc, Ince, and Rooney and yet won titles and trophies), Italy's ex captain Cannavaro said when they won in 2006 title the players were bored with lack of facilities but this focused them on winning united by league scandals. This England spenta lot of time tweeting like a holiday camp when they should have been reading The Art of War.

How can you give tactics to players like Rooney, Gerrard, Sterling, Barkley? they're players that play whats in front of them, they play in the moment, off the cuff.

How does any manager know how a game is gonna pan out? anything can happen in a game of football.

You can have a game plan of how you want to play, but if the players don't have the attitude to do their jobs to the best of their ability then it means nothing.

The main messages Woy would have given his team would have been.

1 Concentration - You know your jobs, make sure you concentrate on doing your job for the full 90 minutes (one switch of and you can get punished against World class players).

2 Don't leave nothing in the dressing room - This is the pinnacle of your careers, dig deep and give everything you've got, you may not get another chance.

3. Enjoy it - You've worked hard to get here, play with a smile on your face and be positive.

Roy's reappointment will deter some decent players of dual nationity from chosing England.

Erm if the FA are willing to pay £3m/ year then they will say tactics...

English football needs to stop being snobby about Mourinho and Wenger types, intelligent tacticians who may have degrees who never played that well in youth. A EPL ex pro may not be the answer.

England need to stop being snobby?

In the past 15 years we've had a Swede and Italian bringing their continental tactics to our national team, they both had the so called Golden generation of players at their disposal, they got knocked out of tournaments with their tails between their legs.

The best England sides in my lifetime where they played the best football, were at Italia 90 where we had an Englishman who had passion for his country and a great motivator as manager.

And Euro 96 when we had a Englishman who had a passion for his country and a great motivator.

Now the evidence doesn't lie.

That's our trouble, we heap praise on other nations and think their way is best, at the same time we just put our own great country down.
