Right seeing as i just have to watch three(?) more seasons of BBUSA to watch, i've decided to start Survivor. just asking if i should watch from the start of the twenty something seasons or is it like BBUS where you can pretty much skip the first season?

You can probably skip season 5 actually as it is terrible.

I actually started on an original modern season to get a grasp of it and familiarise myself with it at modern day stance. But then went straight to the old ones and progressed through, I was hesitant at first but now it's my favourite reality show.. hope you enjoy

If you can watch old TV start at the beginning to get a grasp of the initial format without gimmicks.
If you want to skip a bit then Pearl Islands is drama filled and relatively old but still of course watchable.
If you want to sample Survivor on a more modernised format try Nicaragua or Gabon.

The latest series is one of the best ever.
I would watch Heroes and Villians (s20), fans vs favorites (s16), and Amazon (6)
top four for sure
Also the first Survivor All Stars (s8)

The first season is kinda boring tbh, but is so important. The first season of Survivor created what reality tv is to this very day. Such a great season

The best Survivor player ever is Kim Spradlin from season 24 but her season is one of the worst ever. Would love to see her play again.

I'm five episodes into Pearl Islands that I started cause of the recommendations and it's...okay :suspect: I feel like maybe I should have chosen a more modernised season though
I want to watch a few classics and then if I like it enough I'll consider watching them all, 27 seasons (I've seen Cagayan) is a marathon

The most popular modern newbie seasons are Philippines (S25) and Gabon (S17). Gabon is probably one of the best seasons ever IMO, it has everything you could ask for in a reality tv show and it has one of my favourite castaways of all time in it  Tocantins (S18) is straight after Gabon and I found that one quite good also, however it did fall a bit flat towards the middle of the season.
This might be an unpopular opinion but another modernised newbie season I really enjoyed was Samoa (S19). A lot of people dislike it, mainly for Russel Hantz, but I found it quite gripping and entertaining, and I felt it was really good.
And I don't know how modern you want it to be, but I'd say Panama: Exile Island (S12) would be a good choice too. It's all newbies, a new twist is brought into it, it has THE BEST tribe of all time in it (entertainment-wise, of course) and it has my favourite castaway of all time in it, who I'm hoping will return for another returnee season soon. It's definitely modern enough for you to watch but not too different from the roots of the show either. If you're fine watching this first then I'd watch in the order of S12, S17, S19, S25 in a row. S18 is good but personally I wouldn't be in a hurry to watch it ASAP.

I tried to get into it like 2 years ago & I just couldn't, it involved killing animals as well & was really gruesome
Jack_
09-07-2014, 03:46 PM
^ that's part and parcel of the show though, it is about surviving after all. I'm no massive animal lover and it's not lovely to watch but the show itself overshadows that
I'm more bothered about the camera shots they have of disgusting creatures tbh :umm2: and snakes also...I have a fear of them so I can't be doing with seeing them/hearing them mentioned/them featuring in any incidents :/

Russel Hantz is the most polarizing reality star ever. Tons of people hate him, but tons of people love him. The guy is a huge douchebag, but I can't help but love watching him. It's more of laughing at him than with him though

they don't show that stuff as much in the later seasons. The latter seasons after 16 focus more on gameplay than anything. The survival aspect is huge in the earlier seasons, but shown less in latter seasons

The show is filmed with a manned camera right? So when it's tow people having a private conversation it's actually two people a camera man and maybe some producers and a sound crew.
Or is fixed/remote controlled cameras like I'm a celeb?

I think it's with a camera man, who will ask questions to the castaways but they're not aloud to be asked anything or spoken to outside of the questions. I'm not sure whether the cameramen are hidden too.

I think Samoa could have been great. Unfortunately it's single-handedly the worst edited season of any show... ever? Galu's an amazing tribe that shines even through an awful edit, but unfortunately watching The Russell Show was atrocious. It might be better on rewatch but good lord it was infuriating to watch live. Russell had ****ing 108 confessionals, the next highest was 39. There's no ****ing excuse for that lopsided editing and it really ruins the season for the most part.
HOWEVER, the end was ****ing fantastic and such a satisfying ending <3
