View Full Version : Luis Suarez - BiteGate

Uruguay's Luis Suarez was involved in another World Cup controversy as he appeared to bite Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during their Group D clash.
Suarez pushed his head towards Chiellini in the penalty area just before Diego Godin's Uruguay winner.
Play media

World Cup 2014: Match of the Day pundits on Luis Suarez bite
Chiellini pulled his shirt down to show the referee an apparent mark on his shoulder made during the clash.
"It was ridiculous not to send Suarez off. It is clear, clear-cut," Chiellini told Italian television station Rai TV.

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has been banned for biting twice in his career
"Then there was the obvious dive afterwards because he knew very well that he did something that he shouldn't have done."
After the clash between the players, Suarez, 27, went to ground holding his mouth, apparently suggesting he had been elbowed.

As the Italian ran after referee Marco Rodriguez, Uruguay forward Gaston Ramirez attempted to get Juventus defender Chiellini, 29, to cover his shoulder.
Suarez has twice been banned for biting and, at the 2010 World Cup, committed a handball on the line to stop Ghana from scoring.
Fifa will wait to receive the referee's report, with a spokeswoman telling BBC Sport: "We will gather all the necessary elements in order to evaluate the matter."

Luis Suarez's controversies
July 2010 - Handles on the line to deny Ghana a winner in the last minute of extra-time in the World Cup quarter-finals. Asamoah Gyan misses the resulting penalty and Uruguay win the shoot-out to reach the semi-finals.

November 2010 - Given seven- match ban for biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal on the shoulder while playing for Ajax.

December 2011 - Given eight-match suspension and fined £40,000 for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra.

February 2012 - Refuses to shake hands with Evra at Old Trafford and is described as a "disgrace" by Sir Alex Ferguson.

April 2013 - Suarez apologises for his "inexcusable behaviour" for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic and receives a 10-game ban.

The disciplinary committee of world football's governing is responsible for "sanctioning serious infringements which have escaped the match officials' attention".
Any suspension could range from "up to three matches or up to two months".
Fifa vice-president Jim Boyce said: "There is no doubt Luis Suarez is a fantastic footballer but, once again, his actions have left him open to severe criticism.
"Fifa must investigate the incident seriously and take whatever disciplinary action is deemed necessary."
Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez tried to play down the incident and believes there is a vendetta from certain media towards Suarez.

Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini (right) shows the apparent marks on his shoulder after the incident
"I'd like to see the images first before making any comment. If it happened, then the referee probably didn't see it," said Tabarez.

"Despite mistakes Suarez has made, he is the target of certain media, a certain press."
Italy manager Cesare Prandelli said he was resigning after the defeat by Uruguay, which eliminated his side from the tournament in Brazil.
"I didn't see the images of Suarez but I did see the bite marks in Chiellini's shoulder," said Prandelli.

Liverpool's Suarez was banned for 10 games for biting Branislav Ivanovic in a Premier League match in April 2013.
He was also banned for seven games for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal's shoulder while Ajax captain in 2010.
The forward courted controversy at the tournament four years ago when he used his hand to block Dominic Adiyiah's goal-bound shot in the 120th minute.
Suarez was sent off, while Ghana missed the subsequent penalty and went on to lose the World Cup quarter-final on penalties.
BBC Sport pundit and former England international Alan Shearer believes Suarez should now be severely punished for the Chiellini incident.
"I could not believe it," he said. "The pictures are pretty damning and, if found guilty, they should hammer him.
"He has built up his reputation over the last 12 months and to come into the tournament and do that, I am lost for words.
"I can understand why the referee did not see it clearly but they can look at video evidence and there is no way he can get away with that. It is pretty clear.
"What on earth is he thinking of?"

Right.

Point #1 - Don't even bother having an opinion on this if you don't watch football regularly. You have no say in the matter, go away.

Point #2 - He done it in a Uruguay shirt, I am all for him being banned from International football for a while :pipe:

Point #3 - He has already been punished for what he has done in a Liverpool shirt.

Point #4 - Chiellini does sound like a fine Italian dish.

Point #5 - It's hilarious.

Would happily continue on the path of one bite per season if he continues to score the goals he does. Happy days. Top guy <3

How can you seriously defend this? I don't watch football on a regular basis but I think any true fan of the sport would be disgusted with this. It's on a par with the Tyson vs Holyfield incident.

Is anyone else genuinely interested in the psychological side of things which makes him think repeatedly that this is a good and worthwhile thing to do

I genuinely can't figure out how a grown man thinks this is okay and thinks that with the amount of cameras on every game he will actually get away with it. There's a slim chance he will get away with it on the pitch, if the referee/linesman doesn't see the incident clearly, but he will never get away with it after the footage has been scrutinised. I think there's actually something seriously wrong with the guy. And, he'll never get away with it on the pitch again now because he has a reputation as a 'biter'.

Anyway I think people have been more severely hurt by them kicking each other. Again that doesn't justify it, but I do think some of the hate directed towards him might be because of the two goals he scored in the match before.

Didn't ask what Utd did, I asked if their fans backed him. And ah yes, the good old t-shirts, good times.

We've actually done quite a bit about his biting/temperament but it clearly didn't work, although we can't be blamed here considering he has done it on Uruguay duty. Either way, he wasn't banned for Uruguay when he got banned for biting in a Liverpool shirt, so he shouldn't be banned for Liverpool now.

Makes no difference if it's at the World Cup or in League 2. And I'm not too sure actually, but in any case karate kicking a fan is a lot worse than a small bite on an opposing player.

Stop wearing your liverpool tinted glasses and face the facts, the guy is a mentally idiotic troubled footballer. He has bit someone on the pitch THREE times. Hes hate is justified.

It has nothing to do with supporting Liverpool, though. It could be Rooney and I'd still not judge. I have no emotional connection to any of it so why would I feel strongly one way or the other about it personally. Obviously he did wrong but I'd look at the psychological goings on as I don't believe him to be some monster because he can act out during a football match. Because he's "troubled" I don't think it justifies hate, no. I'm against all type of mass public hate unless we're talking a truly "evil" criminal but even then something's caused it... but that's a different conversational altogether.

But I think I look at things differently to most people.

I sound like a hippy.

I don't get it, if I in public or a workplace were to deliberately unprovoked bite someone anywhere I would be done for assault.

How this guy gets away with so much is beyond me, he doesn't need to, he has an immense skill at playing football,is is ridiculous he could get away with it virtually once but repeatedly, no way.

Were he to do this ever again then I think he shoudl be banned from being able to play professionally at all.

Is it just me who thinks there's something psychological behind it all? A normal grown man doesn't bite like that... I genuinely think there is something behind it

Not excusing him at all but I definitely think there Is something weird about it
