“The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness.”
Vladimir Nabokov
Being human is realising the above and religion is created to counter this knowledge and pretend that we never die.
How do you feel about the quote?
I got it from an excellent radio clip by the Author William Boyd. You can listen below and its well worth a listen.

It does seem the most likely, but it's impossible for us to know for certain.

we know
I don't know, it makes sense to me that we come from nothingness and will go back to that, but I can't know for certain.
It's a different debate when talking about magical creatures. From what we know of the world we can make an assumption whether they exist or not.
But there are no clues in this world to what happens to us after.

I not only agree with the sentiment; I like it. The idea of "existing" in any form for eternity is absolutely horrifying to me. I have no idea why people are so compelled to cling to the idea of eternal life... so fixated on it that they've created thousand-page narratives to support their deities and afterlife concepts. I don't want it! The only thing keeping me going half of the time, keeping me plodding on, putting up with the pointless cacophonic rabble of humanity, is the knowledge that, one day... simple, silent nothingness is waiting. Just oblivion. Ahhh.
Going on forever... think about what that really means... FOREVER... in "heaven" or whichever other afterlife with smelly stinky stupid people ... nonononononoooo...
To sum up, in the words of the one true immortal, Brian Blessed:
"Who wants to live forever?
DIIIIIIIIVVVEEE!!!"
