anyone know the laws on dog barking? IE How long and loud do they have to bark for before people can complain? Also if it was actually classed as a nuisance can the council even though I don't live in a council house, can they make you put dogs to sleep?

Oh no has someone reported you mizzy? There's some miseries about.. I think if they take the complaint serious enough they may send an official to record the noise level from their property.
Is there a way of keeping them quiet, or moving them to another room away from dividing walls?
Try not to worry, just be as gracious as you can to the council, if they can see your being complicit they'll be more reasonable.

Isn't there some sort of collar you can buy to stop them barking?

You can complain too the council whether you live in a council house or not. I think it is the enviroment agency in the council who deal with noise disturbance. If it once a blue moon they wont do anything, dogs do bark. If it everyday for long periods or at night the you can phone them up and complain.
Usually the council will write to the person with the dog and tell them they have had a complaint and varies ways for the owner to deal with it. If that doesnt work they can come round and test how loud the noise is. If it goes over a certain range then the owners will have to take measures to stop it or they can be taken to court or fined. I dont think they can put a dog to sleep unless it is a danger.

Yes there is one that you can get that squirts a nasty smelling odour at the dog when they bark and another that gives them a small elec hit when they bark. Ouch!

Not ideal but it's better than having to get rid of the dogs I guess

If the dogs bark a lot, I'd look into ways to reduce the barking.
I've got no problems with dogs but we had a neighbour a while ago who moved in with a dog that barked non stop all day every day for weeks. It drove us absolutely crazy and we were close to reporting it ourselves but someone else did before us. As someone else said, dogs bark sometimes so every now and then is no problem and having them get reported should do nothing. However, excessive continuous barking is extremely annoying. I can't imagine they could force you to put them down though.

Yes it would be worth a try. I used the squirty one with my dog when i had to leave him for short periods and it worked to some extent but didnt stop it altogether so i used a plug in that contains calming vapours, like a jade plug in. That worked really well.

Mine too Niamh, its all quiet and then all of a sudden he'll go off on one scaring me half to death! You go out and there might be one person on the other side of the street! lol
I got the plug in because he suffered from seperation distress when i had to leave him but after a while it seemed to calm him down so i dont use it now. My neighbours tell he is quiet unless the postie arrives but then he does that when i am in!

there are laws?

My neighbour has quite a loud, big dog, when she first moved in she would keep it outside for most of the day and it would pretty much constantly bark. Someone reported it (I was told) and the dog was not seen for months. She now only puts it out for a few hours if it's warm. She is a council resident, I believe.

They will not put a dog to sleep for barking unless it attacks someone. The council cannot place that kind of order, it has to be through the courts. If you were unable to control it, and people kept complaining they would probably evict you.
Kizzy
07-07-2014, 12:45 PM
They can't evict her it's not council property verbal.

Ah ok, well I guess it is the same as if a house alarm goes off for hours on end, the police would be called and it would go from there, I suppose.
There is a clause in my mortgage that says I am not allowed to have pets (ex council flat) so if it was me they could do me for that.
It would have to be one massive wanker of a neighbour to take it much further.
They wont force you to put a dog to sleep for barking.
If the dog barks constantly for long amounts of time you will get a noise abatement order/warning, more so if it's during the night and if you break the warning you can be fined.
The neighbours are supposed to attempt resolving the problem between themselves before going to the council btw.

Ok guys many thanks for the replies. Il tell you the story. I have 3 dogs that live indoors and occasionally bark in the conservatory or garden but its not them. I have 4 dogs that live outside in 2 grand kennels so they r not crap kennels. they r 5ft x 6ft and they each have 5ft x 6ft run and r right next to each other. bear and mink brother and sister live in one and gem and tinsel, mother and daughter live in the other. so none of them are alone. gem has been out there for 5 years and hates the house, bear and mink have been out there 3 years. tinsel since January. The letter from the council states that they bark early in the morning and throughout the day. Now im not disputing that they do do this. early in the morning is 6.45am for their breakfast, it gets light about bloody 4am!!!!! its literally for about a minute until I can get 4 bowls into their runs, the kennels r approx. 5 ft if that away from the house. I take gem out alone @ 9am (shes bad to walk) and the rest get some milk and again there maybe 2 mins of barking. little bits of barking will go on until I take the rest out, but it is not continsously @ all. once they've all been walked, fed and bowls of water filled up generally by 12 noon they all go back into kennels and there is usually completer silence until I have to go out say about 1.45pm and they may bark if I out the indoor dogs out so I usually go give them a treat and a bit stroke. then il be out poss 2 and half hours @ the most, tinsel then gets took out about 4 to 5pm and theres a bit more barking goes on but not for hours again, it wud b for a few mins!!!
my partner peter has rang the council 4 times to speak to the man we got the letter off as it says the people who have complained have to keep a record for 2 weeks (I am also keeping a record) then if its still interfering with their property, god knows how like, they will install the sound equipment and take it from there. So my peter is now saying well if it comes to it we will have to get some of them put to sleep. I told him where to go and said id go to prison before I did that like!!! anyway I actually live in a detached house on the corner of the street and the side of my house and garden backs on to a main road where 100s of people pass daily! Ive asked the neighbour across the road if she ever hears them as she always has her windows open, she said hardly ever. my immediate neighbour is the local councillor and ive just been looking after her house whilst shes been on holiday and I know if it was her she wud have come to my door and told me they r making a noise when I m out or wotever. anyway peter had a word with her today to see what if anything will happen shes going to try and find out. I came home from getting my haircut and tipped today driving slowly past my own friggen house with windows open to see if there was any barking, there wasn't. I even parked along the rd so the dogs didn't hear my car. of course I went to get tinsel and there was a bit of barking for a dew mins and the same when I came back which of course they will do. but there will be total silence from now till 6.45am tomorrow. its got me stressed to hell like!

Sounds like someone who is very unreasonable and impatient if it's only for a couple of minutes at a time.
Our neighbours are really paranoid about their two dogs and are always asking us if the dogs are disturbing us or apologising for barking but we actually rarely ever hear them.

I wouldn't use those anti bark things just to please someone else, they inflict pain. Are they even legal?
Get advice on how you could quite them down from somewhere like the Dog's Trust, from a local Kennels or something.

I really don't see why I need to silence them though as its only for a few mins @ a time like ive said. as for the anti bark muzzles I think there actually anti bite muzzles and no they don't inflict pain @ all its only a bit of material that u put round the dogs mouth, I actually have one dog who barks with one on anyway lol but the rest r a bit thick so they have something round there mouth and they *think* they cant bark lol they can still breath and get water with one on and like I say one still barks shes in the house anyway.

Maybe they would benefit from training, I don't mean from you, one of the approved dog trainers that are around.
I work with someone who used to be a dog trainer in the Army, there was a family who had a couple of rottweilers who were out of control, they couldn't take them out on a lead or anything. He spent an hour with them and they were like new born babies.

peter goes to a warehouse place about once a month and gets about 4 big bags of food called gain its about £14.00 per bag and we prob use a bag a week, but they also get meat, fish, pasta and tinned tomatoes, vitamins, oils on their foods etc etc. he also gets 4 bags of paper dog bedding which gets checked and cleaned daily and fluffed up etc.

pmsl and me :hehe:
...hmm, but it doesn’t sound as though the people who have complained have got any convincing evidence of your dogs barking because they’ve been asked to keep a diary ....which anyway will disprove that they’re barking all the time .... and it’s probable that even if it comes to them installing sound equipment from the diary, they’ll see that it’s only for short whiles at feeding times and because you have racing dogs, it would be inevitable to have some barking but it’s not excessive or ‘disturbing’ so your neighbours have to be reasonable as well and a bit tolerant...I think it sounds as though it’s just someone being really difficult and contrary and nothing will probably come of their complaint Mizzy...you kind of can't have dogs with no barking at all, that's the way of it and hopefully that's what they'll be told....

I read it :smug: Mizzy it will be some misery. Maybe go to the house at the back if you and enquire if they complained and try and sort it out, you could also maybe get something in writing from your neighbours who say they don't bark much so you have proof for the council, they will do their own checks anyway they wont just take the complainees word for it. Dont worry about it, it will all blow over, tell Peter you will have him put down if he suggests putting some of the dogs down again.

ho Cherie, ive told peter I wud go to prison if they said id have to get any of the dogs put down but yeah il also tell him il put him down lol. Peter has spoken to our immediate neighbour who is the local councillor and her husband both have said the dogs don't bark that much the husband who I don't even like said if theres anything they can do to let them know. the councillor said she wud see what she cud find out. im keeping a diary myself of when they bark and how long for. for instance yesterday tinsel barked twice @ 6pm ffs shes a puppy and I was outside playing with her but just incase whoever complained was within earshot I said very loudly *tinsel shush u r not allowed to bark* its pissing me off now like.

I dont think the council will do anything if it just a few barks here & there during the day, after all its the only way a dog can communicate. Your diary will show that it is not constant barking during the day & night.
They may say the 6.45 barking even for a min or two is anti social, thats if they are been very picky!
Is there a way you can record them when you are out for a week or so? This will show you if it is more than you think or prove that it is very little if at all.

Whoever has complained sounds a right twat if its only a few minutes at a time. If it was constant I could totally understand it. The dog next door barks a lot, and I can hear it as if its in my living room tbh, even when its in the house...but I'm a reasonable person and realise that sometimes...dogs bark  Not too sure I would be as reasonable if it was 24/7 though.
