Civil liberties groups expressed concerns that the act could be used in the future by a government with malign intent. Tony Bunyan, editor of Statewatch, described the powers as truly draconian. He said: "Cities could be sealed off, travel bans introduced, all phones cut off, and websites shut down. Demonstrations could be banned and the news media made subject to censorship. New offences against the state could be 'created' by government decree.
"This is Britain's Patriot Act. At a stroke democracy could be replaced by totalitarianism."

that is the act as it stands now, ECJ rulings have quashed the bit the gov rely on to monitor terrorist activity electronically it seems to me?
So we're getting our own NSA
'The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, modelled on a similar US body and including external experts, will be required to check on how the powers are used.'

This is very dangerous, a slippery slope to a totalitarian police state.
one might ask the question... Who polices the Police ??
Absolute power like this can only lead to corruption at the highest levels.
imho......this is a step too far.

Good. I don't see why people are against more security for our country. And it's not only to help in the fight against terrorism, but to counter money laundering, organised crime and other dealings. The world is a dangerous place, there are people working for our safety... I say we give them all the help we can.

If he was that bothered why did he scale back the funding for the PREVENT programme to the tune of millions when it highlighted the need to identify home grown terrorists to counter terrorism?

Maybe they could tell me what the feck my mate Big J was going on about last night. He was pished and giving me the lowdown on Glasto but as the football was nearing its climax I just laid the phone on a cushion next to me and said wow and really every 5 minutes.
Can someone from MI5 call me and let me know the summary?

This measure is not going to deter hardened criminals nor will it stop organised crime, nor will it stop well prepared well funded terrorists from communicating with each other.
What it will do is allow the Govt to be seen to be doing something and it will allow the Govt to snoop on everybody in the hope of picking up information that it may be able to use in a variety of circumstances.
It will have access to so much data that it cannot possibly process any realistic amount, relying probably on computer programs to pick up code words or specific patterns of words which in the event may just turn out to be harmless.
So get ready for more and more stories of Muslims being arrested on suspicion of plotting terrorism when in fact they were talking about a movie or talking about a terrorist attack that they saw on the news.
This will further alienate this group of people and help to create the very thing it is trying to stop.
Way to Go......British Govt another dangerously stupid half baked ill thought out law.

Terrible idea and I don't accept the thought that this is for our protection, infringing on our rights for our 'protection' is completely idiotic.
Pete.
10-07-2014, 05:01 PM
I think people are viewing this incorrectly like I did.
It just means that if MI5 and the police etc think that someone is a terrorist then they are now allowed to look through their emails and phones as they have done in previous occasions in the past
Pete.
