Didn't see a thread on this, so:

'Legendary Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe has come out as gay.

The five-time Olympic gold medallist, 31, has faced rumours about his sexuality for years, which he has always previously denied.'

It's a shame people feel they have to 'come out' as gay because of speculation about their sexuality. It's not really anyone's business, no one has to 'come out' as heterosexual.

That was the most obvious thing ever, I think everyone kind of knew he was

Its a shame he had to wait until age 31 to come out was that down to being in sport/sponsorship or his family? Must be a huge relief to him

No matter how obvious it was, it's still a personal thing that gay people go through, good for Ian.

Very brave thing to do! Happy that more and more sports personalities are coming out.

Yeah I remember it being very heavily rumoured. Kudos to the guy for making it official though...

Found myself kind of in that situation just before I came out....obviously not to the extent a public figure would....I kind of felt deflated aftetwards though. ..

Was reading the other day about how Parkinson was set to ask him about his sexuality in an upcoming interview, thought it sounded like a bit of an unfair thing to grill him about but I guess now it might have been intended as his way to come out
