I'd put money on the fact that more of that dumbass crowd have jobs than don't.
I think it's got more to do with the fact that teenagers and young adults are more interested in texting and constantly checking their facebook/twitter pages than they are in picking up the most basic general knowledge facts or learning about people who are different from them.

Those people are going on to have kids at younger and younger ages and i think children generally learn more from their parents than from any other source and if their parents are dumb and have extremely poor knowledge and intelligence then their kids are just going to get worse with every new generation.

It's a very worrying trend.
