#FreeRemy is no longer just a hashtag -- it's a reality

After serving six years of her eight-year prison sentence, Bronx rapper Remy Ma was released from the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women on Friday. A representative from Remy's camp confirmed to Revolt that the rapper left prison on Friday afternoon. She followed up her release by posting "I'm Back" on Instagram.

Various sources had reported that Remy was scheduled to be released Thursday morning. There was further confusion after officials told Papoose, the rapper's husband who went to Bedford Hills to pick her up, that she would remain in custody.

A day later, however, husband and wife were reunited.

"Congratulations to the #Queen happy 2c you walk out that cage!!!!!!!!!!" Papoose wrote on his own Instagram account. "Time 2 begin a new chapter It's your time."

A fellow New York City rapper, Papoose married Ma when she was behind bars and got a tattoo tribute to his incarcerated wife earlier this year.

In 2008, Remy Ma was convicted of intentional assault after shooting a member of her entourage over a missing sum of $3,000 in 2007. Ma argued the shooting was an accident, but the courts ruled against her.

Remy Ma rose to fame as part of the legendary Terror Squad alongside Fat Joe and the late Big Pun. She featured on the hip-hop collective's No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit "Lean Back" in 2004.

Since 2011, Remy Ma has stated that she supports Nicki Minaj and her success, but has added that she is going to be "a problem" to Minaj once she is released from prison.
