We gave a good account of ourselves tonight, didn't carry enough of a threat going forward to get a goal but defensively and in midfield we were very good. Kolo was brilliant and deserves to start against Chelsea, Mignolet and Moreno were excellent as well.
Gotta give that Liverpool side credit for that tbf. The question is does Rodgers deserve credit for making that side competitive or stick for wasting the chance to put out the strongest side given that they only lost 1-0
Now excuse me from my thinking while I laugh at Arsenal

No surprises on Tuesday, other than Arsenal almost falling and giving up 3-0 lead and ending up in a 3-3 tie in their home pitch. Poor performance.
Olympiakos again giving Juventus a run for their money, even though Juventus eventually rectified their mistake from their last game and won.
Still see only four champion candidates in Real Madrid, Bayern München, Borussia Dortmund and Athletico Madrid. Maybe Chelsea also.

Another poor performance for Man City and probably a crucial loss when thinking about potential qualifiers. They would need two wins over Bayern and Roma and then Roma and CSKA to not win any more games, which i think will not happen.
Good work for Maribor for getting a tie against Chelsea. Surprised about Sporting beating Schalke, great job there.
BATE Borisov suffering yet another embarrassingly big loss to Shakhtar, who are flying at the moment.
Other matches had no surprises, the big ones won. Especially Bayern who just continues to dominate.

Great effort by my sweep Man. City on winning against Bayern München. Aguero doing a hatrick!!! Incredible.
Roma and CSKA miss up an opportunity to get a win and ensuring them a spot in the last 16. Now they both need to win against their opponents if they want to advance.
No real surprises in the 1st half of round 5. Chelsea got easy win over Schalke and therefore secured their last 16 spot. Sporting are on a roll with two consecutive wins after defeating Schalke 4-2 and are close to securing a last 16 spot over Schalke. But they need a tie against Chelsea to advance. Schalke however needs to win against Maribor to have a chance at last 16.
Barcelona and Paris SG got easy wins over APOEL and Ajax and both secured their final 16 spots.
Shaktar lost to Athletic Club, but are still going to last 16 as Athletic and BATE have already lost their chance to advance in the last round. But at least Athletic are playing and trying. Same can´t be said about BATE Borisov, who have not scored a single goal in their last 3 games. Instead they have conceived a whopping 15 in their last 3 games and a total of 22 goals in their 5 games with only 2 goals scored total, both in their only win (2-1) against Athletic Club. I think the worst team in Champions League 2014 is here.
It´s a shame that Athletic lost to BATE in their second game, as they would now have a great chance to advance to last 16, had they won their first game against them.

Best game of the season so far. Sanogo is surprisingly progressing quite well, i remember his first few games for the club.. the heaviest touch i'd ever seen & looked completely lost.. he has great hold up and link up play now and a decent finish tonight. Ox is in the best form of his career too, beating men for fun at the moment. Same with Gibbs, one of our most improved players this season.. poor guy playing in that dodgy back 4. Tactics being used during the game, crazy what a difference they make. Alexis though >>>>>

No huge surprises tonight. Was surprised that Arsenal beat Borussia, one of my predicted champions. But i like Arsenal so that´s okay.
Liverpool only managing a tie against Ludogorets is quite embarassing.
Good effort from Mälmö even though they lost. Juventus was just too good for them to beat.
Good effort from Basel too against Real Madrid. Still a loss is a loss.
Atletico Madrid is just incredible atm. So dominant and precise. Future champions, perhaps?
Even though the Olympiakos goalie helped quite a bit.
Monaco got an away win against the group leaders Bayern Leverkusen. Great effort from both.

No surprises tonight. Basel got the tie they needed to advance, Athletico Madrid and Juventus played a friendly tie "to make sure that both of them advanced" regardless of Olympiakos´s hard fought victory against Mälmö.
Arsenal won against the Turkish underachievers/botch team and put themselves really in to the mix of potential championship candidates.
Real Madrid continues to be too much to handle.
Monaco got a win and when Bayern Leverkusen played a tie, won the group. Good for team.
In short, everyone that deserved to advance, got through.

So...
Man City does the unthinkable and upsets AS Roma by getting a 2-0 win and in the process the second spot and a spot in the last 16. Great effort, didn´t think they could do it.
Bayern easily crushed the dreams of CSKA by a comfortable 3-0 win.
Ajax snuffed APOEL and destroyed them 4-0 and got some of their pride back at the same time. They will be a tough nut to crack in the European league.
Barcelona won against PSG by 3-1 and get their group victory.
Sporting tried their all to beat the strong team of Chelsea, but the London side was too much to handle for them and they lost 3-1. A tie would have been all they needed to qualify.
Schalke got an narrow 1-0 away win against Maribor and will continue their journey in the last 16.
And finally...
Athetic got their revenge for their loss in their first game to BATE way back tonight (yesterday) at their home turf with an easy 2-0 win ending their campaign on a high note. It´s too bad they lost to BATE in the first place. Had they not, they would maybe celebrate a spot in the last 16.
Porto and Shakhtar drawed their game by 1-1 and Shakhtar ended ended their successful group campaign by finishing second and Porto won the group.
Judgement:
Best team (s) : Chelsea, Porto, Arsenal, Athletico Madrid, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munchen
Worst team (s): FC BATE Borisov, Galatasaray and APOEL FC
Best player (s): Messi, Ronaldo, Aguero and Luiz Adriano.
Worst player: Too many to name. All of BATE Borisov and Galatasaray to name a few.
--------------
So the last 16 are:
Athletico Madrid
Juventus
Real Madrid
FC Basel
AS Monaco
Bayern Leverkusen
Borussia Dortmund
Arsenal FC
Bayern Munchen
Manchester City
FC Barcelona
PSG
Chelsea FC
Schalke
FC Porto
Shakhtar Donetsk
So based on those i think there are 7 potential championship candidates which are Athletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, FC Barcelona, Chelsea, Bayern Munchen and Arsenal. Maybe PSG to a stretch.
Locke.

Calderyon
11-12-2014, 02:45 AM
Then i guess Chelsea is the only hope for an English team to win in UCL this season. Then again Man City have gained some of their momentum back, i think, so maybe they can be the wildcards of going all the way.
It all depends on the opponents. At least in this round.
Calderyon
11-12-2014, 02:54 AM
Chances of going all the way IMO:
Great chance:
Real Madrid
FC Barcelona
Bayern Munchen
Chelsea FC
Athletico Madrid
Good chance:
PSG
Borussia Dortmund
Arsenal FC
Juventus
Wildcards/OK chance/Could be either way:
Manchester City
Shakhtar Donetsk (because of Adriano)
FC Porto
Doubtful:
AS Monaco
Bayern Leverkusen
No chance:
FC Basel
Schalke

Paris St-Germain v Chelsea
Expecting an ven game ending in a tie.
Manchester City v Barcelona
Manchester will try their hardest to win this, but will only get a 1-1 tie or a slim loss i think.
Bayern Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid
Athetico has got this. Easy win for them, i think.
Juventus v Borussia Dortmund
Very even and hard fought game ending in a Juventus win.
Schalke v Real Madrid
Schalke has got no chance in hell. Real Madrid will steam through like a train over them.
Shakhtar Donetsk v Bayern Munich
Shakhtar will fight valiantly, but in the end they will fall to the brilliant Bayern München. If Shakhtar want to win, Luis Adriano has to be in a phenomenal shape and pretty much obliterate them by making at least a hat trick.
Arsenal v Monaco
Arsenal need a good start and an early goal would be good to get, since Monaco has good defence and is great at low scoring and slow phased games.
Basel v Porto
Porto is the clear favorite, but they should not underestimate Basel, who can be a very difficult opponent, if they are taken lightly.

Mario is a totally different player now, actually putting in the work and effort on the pitch. Has to start against Southampton alongside Sturridge.

Dismal and embarrassing. The worst I've seen us play for years. Giroud missed three easy chances. Totally inexcusable for to miss so many easy chances at that level. I dont mind if it Bayern or Barca caning us like this but Monaco have sold all their best players but they still beat us easily.

Blessing in disguise going out, we were never going to win the tournament really, at least now we can focus solely on the league.
Not Lovren's fault either, credit to him for having the balls to take one over an attacking player in Sterling and Kolo who just scored one for Ivory Coast a couple of weeks back.

Schalke definitely deserved to get through and it´s a shame they didn´t. Real Madrid was absolutely terrible/on a panic mode and they only got saved because of Ronaldo´s (and Benzema´s) goals. Real Madrid has to consider themselves extremely lucky. Had it been a much better team, they would have been absolutely massacred.
If they don´t get their act together and end up against Bayern München, Porto, PSG, Chelsea, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid or even Monaco on the next round they are going to have a tough time getting through.

Apart from Chelsea being ridiculously boring and negative on the ball its been pretty entertaining due to the 50 or so bust ups and Costa hitting anyone that goes near him. Its a joke how hes still on the pitch.. the ref has had a disaster from the start.

Bayern was as crushing as expected even though Shaktar got the short end of the stick by getting a red card so early. Still, impressive performance from Bayern.
How pathetic is Chelsea for not being able to seal the deal against a 10 -man PSG and their main striker out for most of the game in their home turf? So, so bad performance. Still, incredible stuff, a great battle and a fully deserved advancing from PSG. What´s amazing is even though they were a man short, they still pretty much controlled the game.
Now Man City and Arsenal are the only English teams left in the UCL this season. But both are in dire straits (especially Arsenal), so expect them to be knocked out too.
And out head the last English team left in Europe, good job Kiev

Good effort from Arsenal on Tuesday. Monaco was in serious trouble throughout. Shame it wasn´t enough.
Athletico wins it in the penalties deservedly. Leverkusen had poor kickers.
Manchester City was in shambles (the defense) against Barcelona. Without the goalkeeper, the numbers would have been much uglier.
Juventus had no problems at Dortmund on securing their place in the quarters. Routine and convincing victory.

Quarterfinals:
Athletico Madrid vs Real Madrid -> Athletico Madrid advances.
Tough and even match up with last years finalists. On the paper Real Madrid is the favorite, but their last two matches against Bayern Leverkusen proved otherwise, especially the former, in which they were a goal away from being knocked out.
I think Athletico will get their revenge and advance to the semis.
Juventus vs Monaco -> Monaco advances
Monaco got the best opponent they could hope for, although Juventus is not an easy opponent to face. But i think Monaco has a good chance against an clearly out dated Juventus. They need at least a tie in Roma to have a chance in Monaco, which they can do if their defensive strategy works out. Juventus just needs to keep up in what they are doing and not frustrate themselves (on smashing their heads towards the solid Monaco defense) if they don´t score right away.
PSG vs Barcelona -> Barcelona advances
Another tough match up. PSG has a chance to overcome the challenge Barcelona offers, but they really need to win the first leg in a convincing way to be able to dream about an advancement to the next round. Barcelona will probably go for a defended tie away and then try to crush PSG next week.
Porto vs Bayern München -> Bayern München advances
Porto is a good team, but now they have a behemoth of an opponent against them in Bayern München. Are they too much to handle? Maybe. Only way for Porto to advance is absolutely demolish Bayern in the first leg. Attack hard, often and fast and crack open the Munich defense to pieces by scoring lots of goals.
Bayern can win by routine. Defend good, keep their composure and await for an opportunity and then strike. They would want to take a 0-0 or 1-1 tie and then massacre Porto in the second leg.

We won both of our games on the sunday after playing Europa on thursday this season, it is possible to play in both you just have to manage the squad well.
