View Full Version : Is it all an act?

The panellists on BOTS seem to think Gary is just faking his personality, or is at least exaggerating his own personality. I really never thought this at all so was surprised that a few of them seemed to agree.
Thoughts?

Would be amazing if he was :clap1:
I don't think his personality is an act no. He isn't as stupid as the housemates seem to think he is though.

I agree, they completely underestimate him. It really makes me sad that people sometimes equate old(ish) age and physical impairment with lacking intelligence. (I know he had a brain injury which could affect his intelligence, but as far as I'm aware it hasn't).
I think it is partially an act.
How so?

No, I sometimes think he enjoys winding some of them up but overall,no, I don't think it is an act.

This, but I think that most of his personality traits are genuine.
And besides his entertained me the most which is what matters to me.

Yeah I kind of agree. Even if it is an act, it's one I'm really enjoying, so good enough for me!

They're all putting on an act. The most obvious:
Leslie--kindly amusing elder
James--morally superior being
Kellie--miraculously went from nasty to nice
Gary--slightly befuddled old man
George--love smitten country bumpkin
Dee--all wise and all knowing nurturer
Frenchie--fun loving, wacky young thing
David--young buck without a care in the world
Ricci--young buck without a care in the world
Don't know about the rest. Maybe Audley is just being himself.

What makes you think all of these are "acts" and not just their genuine personality? I agree about Kellie. Also maybe Frenchie and Ricci, but I think the personas they take on have been drummed into them by reality TV. The lines between their TV persona and their true self are probably slightly blurred now.
P.S. Kellie is failing pretty miserably at hers! :hehe: nasty bugger at times.

I don't think it's an act. He's not the only actor to go a bit nutty, Peter Falk went a bit nutty too.

It's just my impression. I agree that some of these acts may have been honed for many years, and even believed, over time, by the actor.

I don't believe Gary is putting on an act - in fact I think he is a very intelligent man and I could spend hours in his company listening to what he has to say - a very wise man indeed. When that panel on BOTS say anything negative about a HM it is usually because they don't like that particular HM and will come up with anything to redicule or make that HM not look good.

Yeah this is what I thought and is why I put the question here where Gary is obviously quite popular. I have never even considered it was an act, so presumed the panellists weren't the biggest fans of him so were just saying it was an act to be negative.
No, I think he is a true eccentric, but I also think he's as smart as hell and knows exactly what he is doing....and what he is doing is playing them all by ******* with their minds. He makes comments that gets at a person's weak points and then when they react by arguing he plays the great guru who is all - knowing and just helping them on their life's path...and he's enjoying himself immensely.
He's brilliant....

I don't think its an act but that is really irrelevant. The issue is the intolerance and lack of compassion from the other housemates towards an elderly, partially deaf man. Even if he was acting it still exposes their behaviour for what it is.

Gary putting on any kind of act or even exaggerating his personality is no worse than the likes of Kellie adopting a completely new person to hide behind, or even James futile attempt to come across as a hard man, or even Dee's invention of a UN peace keeper and the poison dwarfs idea that he is the funniest thing since toothache. They are all putting on an act and the one person, who I like the most, that is now slipping in my estimation, is in fact George. His dumb ass love struck puppy act is getting on my nerves now and he needs to look in the mirror occasionally. He would be better suited to pair up with Dee and accept he falls into the warthog category instead of punching way above his weight with Stephanie twa.t.
Ther only person not acting is Audley and that's because he thinks he has it won.

I personally do not think we should underestimate him, even if they dont realise it he has the edge over many of them. In the beginning he was shown as something which I doubt very much he is, this was due to James and Leslie. The others just follow like sheep instead of debating something in the proper manner. James face was a study with that task. Dee has been disrespectful to him now with her task, he was hurt by it but it is no wonder as didnt Stephanie tell him that they all hated him. She tries to put him right in Leslie fashion but walks off in the end with the usual comments. No Mother Theresa in my eyes but I think BOTS may be wanting her to win, she has a lot of support.
Just say Gary is acting, ok he is an actor and the name of the game is to win, he has my vote all the way. I do not think he is acting though tbh.

I think Gary at the end of the day is a wind up merchant, and yes I believe he's putting some of it to some extent - perhaps because it causes those intolerable of him to hang themselves. I doubt he does it for the public viewing, but more for his self amusement. Who wouldn't when you have a neanderthal pack mentality in there lol

Im begining to doubt his deafness, he wears hearing aids and I would imagine
he can afford good ones ,yet still makes out he hears nothing ,but in the bedroom last week in his tiff with James when he walked away to the other end of the room James muttered something he spun around and came back to ask him to stand up ,so clearly heard what he said

I'm not sure if I doubt his deafness but maybe he does play on it sometimes. Sometimes I think if he doesn't know what to say he says "what? I can't hear" to avoid replying  I do reckon though that he really struggles when lots of people talk at once, like when Stephanie was saying she didn't like him while David and Leslie were talking. As others have said, I think the different accents make it really difficult for him.

No, well he had brain surgery and has hearing problems, he is using these things to his advantage, but it's a game at the end of the day.
If he was infirm as the edit shows that he is, then I doubt if gary would being allowed on the show in the first place.

I'm not sure anyone can assess the severity of his deafness by watching him on telly. If he needs two hearing aids I'm guessing it's pretty severe.
You're right about the cheers and boos. It'll be all change come Wednesday.

My father has bad hearing problems, trust me if he does not wear his hearing aids then he can't hear people from 10 feet away talking normally with hearing aids he can.
So I can take a guess at his problems, he has them but plays them up.
No hearing problems when he has a disagreement with a housemate does he.

Not sure I agree with you. I could be wrong of course... but I think it's unfair to lump everyone who has hearing problems into one group, I'm sure the difficulties they face are varied. We'll have to agree to differ on this one Waylander.

Fair enough, all I say is most hearing problems are range and loudness limited so gary should providing he's wearing his hearing aids or not should be able to cope with close range conservations at least.

I rest my case in what I said earlier about the panel on BOTS. Last night, Nadia (and another) rediculed Gary and BOTS audience cheered in appreciation of what she said. Tonigh, Cheggers, Dungan James and the other guy said they loved Gary and the BOTS audience were in agreement. One thing I don't like about the BOTS audience is that on a night before an eviction, they will loudly say who they want evicted and then when, the following night, that HM is evicted and appears on BOTS, the BOTS audience give them a big cheer.

I personally think Gary's probably the most real person in there!
Yeah, he plays to his personality to some extent but everyone does to some degree, it's a natural human trait!
You can just tell by the way he talks to people that everything he says is said with the utmost sincerity and real integrity. I think that's the reason that he can seem a bit 'out there' at times. I think because of his brain injuries it takes him a few seconds longer to think about what he's going to say and he seems to want to make sure that he gives himself that few seconds so that he says exactly what he wants and needs to.
I personally think it's admirable the way he comes across and i think he's an amazing guy!!!:clap2:

Yeah agreed, hearing problems can have a whole range of different sources and associated problems. Hearing aids that help one person could be less helpful to another. It's pretty aimless to debate to what extent Gary can hear.

Good post, I'm still in two minds about the whole thing but I'm definitely leaning more to this opinion. Gary has an eccentric personality and this can often be mistaken for fake/exaggerated. He's coming across well to me too and has been a pleasant surprise - when I heard a Hollywood actor was entering I presumed he'd be typical, boring, and I'd never warm to him, but I was wrong :)
