A Miami skateboarder who told police he was attacked by a group of black men is in trouble for lying.

Rene Betancourt, 22, woke up with two black eyes, a fractured skull and orbital bone and other lacerations after being knocked out July 7 and insisted he was the victim of an attempted mugging. Police believed him until they saw video from a nearby surveillance camera.

"All we had from the beginning was three to four black males," Napier Velazquez of the Miami Police Department told ABC. She added that the video "changed the entire investigation."

Betancourt is shown skateboarding around a parking garage around 1am on the day of the alleged attack. After skating around by himself for a while he is shown slamming into a concrete wall and landing face-first on the cement floor of the parking garage.

After about five minutes, Betancourt regains his consciousness and stumbles around until he finds an elevator. The allegedly battered man was found in his car by his shocked family covered in blood and bruises.

"To keep hitting somebody until their head is cracked, until their head is fractured … you have to want to hurt somebody," betancourt's sister Andrea told WPLG. "We were just relieved that nobody was like trying to hurt him or at worst kill him."

Rene was convinced somebody hit him, Andrea Betancourt told WPLG. She added that "his eyes are all messed up, it looks like somebody punched him."

Miami Police have yet to decide whether Rene Betancourt will face charges for lying because he claims he doesn't remember what happened, according to WPLG.

Sgt. Eunice Cooper, commander of the Miami Homicide Unit, told ABC that "the case is still open pending further investigation."

Not remembering events shortly before a severe concussion is fairly common.

Considering he had such serious injuries to his head isn't it possible he believed what he was saying. perhaps while he was unconscious he had a dream about getting mugged and he thought it was real?

I would say that was entirely plausible... being unconscious and given strong pain medication could do that.

Definitely possible.

Also possible is he felt a bit daft about doing it, made up what he felt was a plausible story to save face but didn't factor in cctv and his plan backfired like a bugger
