It is the greatest murder mystery of all time, a puzzle that has perplexed criminologists for more than a century and spawned books, films and myriad theories ranging from the plausible to the utterly bizarre.

But now, thanks to modern forensic science, The Mail on Sunday can exclusively reveal the true identity of Jack the Ripper, the serial killer responsible for at least five grisly murders in Whitechapel in East London during the autumn of 1888.

DNA evidence has now shown beyond reasonable doubt which one of six key suspects commonly cited in connection with the Ripper’s reign of terror was the actual killer – and we reveal his identity.
A shawl found by the body of Catherine Eddowes, one of the Ripper’s victims, has been analysed and found to contain DNA from her blood as well as DNA from the killer.

The landmark discovery was made after businessman Russell Edwards, 48, bought the shawl at auction and enlisted the help of Dr Jari Louhelainen, a world-renowned expert in analysing genetic evidence from historical crime scenes.

Using cutting-edge techniques, Dr Louhelainen was able to extract 126-year-old DNA from the material and compare it to DNA from descendants of Eddowes and the suspect, with both proving a perfect match.

The revelation puts an end to the fevered speculation over the Ripper’s identity which has lasted since his murderous rampage in the most impoverished and dangerous streets of London.

In the intervening century, a Jack the Ripper industry has grown up, prompting a dizzying array of more than 100 suspects, including Queen Victoria’s grandson – Prince Albert Victor, the Duke of Clarence – the post-Impressionist painter Walter Sickert, and the former Liberal Prime Minister William Gladstone.

doesn't really prove he's her killer tho, just that he'd had sex with her and since she was a prostitute and he lived in the area he could have had sex with her on the night.

That's very true.

All this proves is that he had sex with her. Back then people would pay with items so that expensive looking shawl could have been his way of paying for her services.

Its highly likely he is the killer given his mental state, the fact he heard voices and ended up in a mental institution the rest of his life doesn't really go in his favour.

Its fascinating whatever the outcome that there were still cells and dna on it 124 years after it happened.

What they really need to do is exume the victims now and retest for his dna on those aswell to be really sure if its him. If they find his dna on more than 1 then obviously he's the guy but until they do its still not 100% proof he is Jack The Ripper.

They should but I don't think they'd get permission. I don't think they can do it for all the victims either as Annie Chapman's grave no longer exits, she's buried somewhere in a cemetery but nobody knows where because her marker was removed and most probably the grave re-used.

His family should sue, there's no evidence he killed her just that they had sex. Trust the mail to run this to incite mistrust of the Polish community :idc:

still not him for definite, but it bumps him up to first on the list of most likely suspects.

Interesting read, even if it doesnt prove he is the killer, it puts him at the top of the list of suspects. The fact that he was put in to an asylum may explain why the killings stopped as well.

DNA is a discovery that we Brits should feel proud of (Crick&Watson being British) it really has revolutionised criminology.

After I saw this thread, I read up on Mary Jane Kelly, the fifth of the canonical five victims.. Devastating :(

They have exhumed one victim before but didn't perform this type of dna test and now with new dna from him its a whole different ball game as they know exactly what they are looking for.

We will never know if he killed every one of the reported victims if the dna test isn't done on all of them but if they find dna on any other victims who were reported in the media as being killed by Jack The Ripper then hes the dude.

Who discovered dna, was it the brides in the bath murders? Or was that just them reinacting how murders could have possibly happened. I know that case revolutionised how criminology is today.

Yeah, they'll die from hunger and preventable disease and yet we'll all get on with our lives going shopping for our luxury foods, visiting the doctors, chemists, hospitals to easily treat many of our ailments.

I don't see your point.

Yeah, we are not really civilized - we just think we are!

I bet to our shame, in another 100 years from now, the situation would be worse not better.

However, I do think science is the way forward so I'm very pleased with the advances we have made in those areas. We need to do much more, much quicker to save the planet and our resources. Our continued life on Mother Earth is very tenuous and delicately balanced. If we lose our bees for instance we'd soon starve. Our fresh water resources are depleting faster than they are regenerated. Maybe in a 100 years from now we'll all be fighting over drinking water and a bowl of rice unless science has solutions.

In 1960 Grandfather predicted that mankind would eventually survive on a handful of tablets as food and we'd be recycling our toilets for drinking water. We are already doing the latter and many if us are already taking extra vitamins to remain healthy. There is just one natural world-wide disaster between what we have now to that prediction.
