Forty-three animals have been killed in a suspected arson at Manchester Dogs' Home.
A boy whose age remains unclear has been arrested on suspicion of arson.
Greater Manchester Police said the blaze was being "dampened down" but confirmed dozens of dogs had been killed.
Residents said they could hear "dogs yelping".
Twitter user @Hoyles10 said: "Big fire at Manchester Dogs Home, apparently the building has collapsed, too late for the animals by all accounts...Heartbreaking."
Fellow user @MostonRedDevil wrote: "Manchester dogs home is on fire with all the dogs yelping."
More than 20 firefighters are battling the blaze at the charity's rehoming centre in Harpurhey.
The home has cared for more than one million dogs since it was established in 1893. It has capacity for hundreds of dogs.
A police spokesman said: "We have received lots of calls from people who want to look after any dogs which have been left without a home. We are not sure at this stage what help is needed."
Literally shaking with rage. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Just heard about this...awful. my dog went missing a few years ago and spent a lot of time there whilst looking for him. The staff were all great but there were hundreds of dogs. Poor things....why would anyone want to do that? It's totally beyond me

I genuinely hope the bastard who did it suffers horribly for the rest of his miserable worthless life.
Hurting innocent animals who were just looking for loving home is senseless and evil.

They better get locked away for a very very long time the ugly little cretins!
RIP to those animals, I really can't @ the generation I am in's cruelty to animals. It's all over facebook videos and you hear stories about this all the time. Sickening.

Probably Kaz, the problem with this is that if anyone can mistreat or harm animals, the next step is usually humans, there's some sick, sick people in the world.

I saw this on fb last night as I know few people from the whippets who live in Manchester. They took their vans along to offer transportation if needed. Said there was 100s of people there with blankets, crates, bowls etc. It actually upset me so much I was in tears. sick sick little !!!!!!

Yeah they had lots of people turning up last night to offer shelter to the rescued dogs apparently.....
Sick little **** who did it...
Things like this make me wish we had gladiator arena's for people who did this sort of thing. Let's see how brave and big they are with a couple of matches in front of a pair of pissed off Bengal tigers.

im amazed at all the feedback Ive seen on on FB... so many people offering to help, even in harrogate! I've seen building managers saying they will lend supplies for free, people donating tons of dog equipment, offering to home dogs, etc etc... brilliant
as for the little **** who did it... he will get what is coming to him. he is still in school and kids will find out it was him.

It was so horrible to hear this story. Dogs, even when they've been massively mistreated by beings who consider themselves to be human, still give us their trust. And just when I think I'm losing all hope for humanity, I hear the stories about all the people who turned up with blankets, food, cages, and the hundreds of thousands of pounds that has been raised, it kind of restores my faith in people.
If the 14 year old is found to be guilty I hope he gets a proper sentence and I hope his parents are also held accountable.

A truly horrible story.

I was very upset to here about the Dogs Trust arson attack. Thank you and well done to every one who chipped in and helped physically and to those who have already donated money towards rebuilding.
One cannot believe there people in our midst capable of such heinous crime against helpless animals. Hope whoever it is gets their just punishment. It's an outrageous crime that cannot be justified under any circumstances.

I do believe jack p shepard apologized, mind he shouldn't have said it in the 1st place. Good on Simon Cowell donating 25k towards the rebuilding of the dogs home and sending those 2 guys who saved 20 dogs, on an all inclusive holiday.

I didn't know that about Simon Cowell, Mizzy. He often says how much he loves dogs... what a nice thing to do.
