wasps in the winter

i was just thinking about it and where do wasps go in the winter? you only ever see them in the summer so if they all die out in the winter how do they come back in the summer? do they hibernate or do they emmigrate? :conf:

I had one pestering me yesterday when I was taking my dog for a walk, I just thought it was a fly at first so I didn't take any notice but when it stayed for about 20 seconds hovering above my head I wondered what the hell it was and it was a wasp!
