Rubbish. It's still by far safer than most places in the world. You have more chance of being attacked in the UK.

Well that's because it's NONSENNSSEEE...
*ahem*
Having quickly looked it up, Thailand has a murder rate of 5 per 100,000 people whilst the UK has a murder rate of 1 per 100,000 people.
Interestingly though, the US has a murder rate of 4.7 per 100k so roughly the same as Thailand - though obviously all of this depends on city / region wherever you are (for example, although the UK is 1/100,000... the City of Glasgow is 2.8/100,000).
Also, Detroit bumps up the US rate all on its own with a somewhat stunning 48/100,000. I remembered this one because a few years ago when an ex Police Chief from Detroit was called in by Glasgow police as a consultant, he pointed out that in one year there were more murders in Detroit than in the entire UK.
For the purposes of weighing up holiday destinations, though, you're more "at risk" going to New York (6.7), Los Angeles (7.8) or of course Orlando Florida, home of Disney, (11.0)... than Thailand.

what about murder rates specifically for tourists/vacationers though?
I imagine most of those murder rates for US cities are very specific neighborhoods related to gang warfare, and specific ethnic groups, not general population or tourists.

True, I was thinking of LA that the figure will be inflated by gang killings. I imagine murder rates in Hollywood are pretty low. Unless you count unhinged celebs. That's presumably true everywhere, though... e.g. Glasgow is classed as the "most dangerous city in the UK" but the city center is very modern and safe - it's just that the city has some... questionable... outlying residential zones.

Yea i agree with you. statistics make too many generalizations. Most people that live in cities know where the dangerous parts are, and usually the dangerous parts are very isolated.
There are even apps now that you can download and will tell you which neighborhoods to stay away from in any city.
of course some guardianistas objects and say it's a racist app. lol I read the guardian everyday, but still it makes me hate the far left. They make such ridiculous arguments sometimes.
I consider myself to be moderate left wing. the far left annoys me just as much as the far right, actually the far left annoys me more because they should know better.

Tourists get murdered everywhere you buffoon, the only reason this had made news is because they are British people. That island is not known for being dangerous. Given some of Thailand can be but not there.

Let's just say that extremism in either corner is a very bad thing, thank god the UK has never elected such extreme parties while I've been alive.
And aren't the Police suspecting that it's a British backpacker?

I've travelled quite a lot in Thailand, was only in Kho Tao and Kho Phangan last December, and an attack like this seems alien to what I've experienced of the Thai nature. Having said that, there are always aberrations...whoever is responsible, they have brought sadness to the hearts of many, obviously the families, but also to everyone that loves the peace and beauty of the Thai culture. Absolutely shocking and heart-rending.

if you are a male that's probably smart, but if you are a female, not smart at all. women are much more likely to be raped or killed in their own home than anywhere else.
A woman is much safer in a dark alley than in her own home. fact.

i could definitely rape you if i wanted to, no offense. I'm charming and stuff. :)
That's the point, most women are raped by husbands and boyfriends, not by strangers.
That's also why most rapes go unreported.
If a boyfriend or husband rapes them they worry about where will i live? how will i survive? when you move in with someone and they have most of the financial control, it's scary for most women to just leave. people don;t understand how much control a man has over some women. and just because they have no money doesn't mean they deserve to be raped!
I have family members that were abused, and other members of my family actually abandoned them. even blamed them. you think having a strong family means you won't be abused, nope, i've witnessed my family alienating and ostracizing family members just for mentioning, even taking the man's side. because in their head a it's a woman's job to keep the family together, and if a man hits her, it must be because she did something wrong. I've actually seen this.
I wish there were cameras everywhere to show what really goes on, and how abusive men really are.
I say this as a Man.

Thai Murders: Hannah DNA Matches Asian Men
http://news.sky.com/story/1339247/thai-murders-hannah-dna-matches-asian-men
So someone from that zone
There's a guy on Facebook called Sean McAnna who works in Koh Tao and knew the guy murdered. He's been posting that it was the owners of a bar there who murdered them both and that apparently the Thai mafia are after him?
I dunno how true it is, but it seems legit as his family, etc. are all posting on his page to go somewhere safe and that the British Embassy in Thailand have been informed.

The Thai police believe they have caught the men responsible for this crime...
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/thailand-beach-murders-burmese-man-confesses-to-murder-of-hannah-witheridge-and-david-miller-police-say-9769805.html
They have also said that the evidence consists of CCTV footage, DNA and finding Hannah's phone in a bush near the 2 suspects home.
A friend of a friend of Hannah disputes the phone evidence. Here's a link..
https://www.facebook.com/CSILA90210/photos/a.600950366649359.1073741828.596740650403664/708164839261244/?type=1&relevant_count=1
I read another forum and they've looked at footage taken the morning of the murder, a police video, including footage of Hannah's friend at the station.
In the footage, at 1:22 you can see a phone, with a purple case and pink edge, off to the side, which looks an awful lot like the phone Hannah has in front of her, in the last photo of her before she was raped/murdered.
Police Video - MUExdYSpmNw
Last photo of Hannah - http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?app=core&module=attach§ion=attach&attach_id=286738
So how did the phone end up behind the suspects home?

Yeah, I've seen them. unbelievable horror. The girl's murder was particularly gruesome. You could tell she'd been raped and the injuries to her head were similar to been hit by a speeding train. Terrible.
I don't believe those two tiny weak-looking men who were charged with the murders did it.
To overpower the man would take something. I think he was 6 feet 1. They look about 5 feet 4.
I believe there was more than two murderers.

Based on what i've heard about british tourists, i'm not surprised.
Wasn't there a big protest in greece or spain recently about how horrible Brit tourists were behaving?
They basically go to another country, and act like ****heads and think it's okay cause they are over seas, they can just go home the day after.

I believe the two that have been arrested are patsies being used to cover up for a family of considerable influence on the island of Koh Tao. Not for the first time either.
Migrant workers get paid a pittance, so why would these two just chuck Hannah's phone in a bush by their home when they could easily get 10,000 baht for it? Which could feed their families for a month.
