View Full Version : Iceland check-out woman took offence at me saying 'no' before she asked the question

Every time I get to the check-out at Iceland I am always asked the same question, 'do you have an Iceland card?'

It's so annoying, that I have to say no all the time. If I had one, wouldn't I show it first? Have it ready? Of course I would.

Well today I was in a jovial mood. At the check-out I thought I'd have a laugh by saying 'no' just before she asked the question.:joker:

So I did. And what a response I got. She said, 'excuse me...' and she looked really offended. All red in the face.

I said, 'err, I don't have an Iceland card. I get asked so many times I thought I'd get in there quick before you asked the question.' :joker:

Anyone else would have surely laughed.

Not her. It looked like she was fuming. She went more red in the face. And said, 'actually I could have asked you loads of questions. You didn't know what I was going to say.'

At which point I wanted to get out of that shop quick. I couldn't be bothered with the hassle.

But would you believe it. :D:joker::joker:

They probably have to ask that though :nono: Also, I always forget to give my card at the supermarket I shop in so I like that they remind me

Iceland is awful for asking that, plus I had a card for years and they used to scan it every time then the checkout woman tried to scan it one day and said oh this card doesn't work and when I told her I had it for years she said oh well, it's not registered. :fist:

So now I don't have one and it annoys me when they ask all the time.

Did you not notice that you weren't getting any vouchers posted back to you?

I don't mind the card thing, but in some shops they say, would you like some chocolate/batteries/phone top up... If I did I would ask/get some grrr!

The card was registered in the past, I used to get the leaflets sent out plus years ago Iceland used to give you a free £10 roast at xmas if you used your card throughout the year.

I told her it was registered and she was saying no and then said you will have to start with a new one, I just told her no.

Oh with the card we have you get money vouchers for the supermarket posted out every 3 months or something

Yeah the Tesco card is like that.

Maybe Iceland was too at one point I just can't remember but they definitely used to sent me leaflets and stuff (with my name and address) plus I got the free roast a few times before they stopped doing it.

Jeez, all I said was 'no' with a smile on my face. :)

Quickly followed by 'err, I don't have an Iceland card. I get asked so many times I thought I'd get in there quick before you asked the question.'

I agree offence would have been caused if I had said, 'no, you fat lump. I don't have a ****ing card in case you ask.'

That would have been offensive. Methinks she is way too touchy.:nono:

I know several of the other check-out girls and they would have laughed. :)

:joker: the card question annoys me too or if the cashier is trying to sell something at the checkpoint.
if I wanted something I would've got it before I came to pay :idc:.

I have to ask customers if they have a clubcard because some of them are too stupid to remember to get it out and then blame me for not telling them if I don't

The question is, how would you have reacted if I had said 'no' to you with a smile -

- very closely followed by 'err, I don't have an Iceland card. I get asked so many times I thought I'd get in there quick before you asked the question.'

We have to ask every customer if they have a bonus card as we have a personal target % to reach

Jake.

Yeah, they're made to ask.. I doubt they give two ****s if you have one or not, they're only doing their job

Niamh.

Infact they're probably more annoyed at having to say the same sentence over and over and over all day long then you are about having to answer it once or twice a week :hehe:

You have to do that/there are targets you have to reach with sales of things like that..so it's pretty much essential otherwise you'd end up being sacked ..it's technical term is 'product focus'

You're right. I bought three Indian curries at £1 each only to be told, 'wait, you want some change.'

'Eh,' I said. '£1x3=£3.'

'No, they've been reduced to 89p each.'

Lovely curries. Covered a big plate too. Yum. :) :D

MUCH worse than the card thing is...do you want bags...when you have a hundred quids worth of shopping there and clearly do NOT have your own bag.

No of course not, I am going to levitate it all home :fist:

..maybe I'm over-thinking it but even though it was said and meant with the best intentions I can see why the assistant may have not taken it in the same 'light-hearted' way and may have found it 'sarcastic or condescending' etc...she probably hates having to ask it over and over again herself and knows that customers can find it annoying but still she has to because she could possibly be reprimanded if she didn't/it's part of her job....so as well intentioned the comment was she was probably thinking...'ughhh, I don't need this...AS IF I WANT TO ASK...do I care if you have your card...'....

...anyway, I'm quite blessed with my job because there really are hardly ever 'two days the same' so there is a lot of job satisfaction there but it must be so mind numbing at times to kind of spend your hours/days/weeks doing the same thing over and over and having to ask these same questions...being irritated by having to and kind of knowing your 'irritating' other people by it as well...I just imagine the satisfaction and pleasure of those days when some go home to their families/partners and say...YESSSSSS..!!!!!!!!....SHE/HE BOUGHT THE BATTERIES...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...today was a good day..:smug:....

...anyway, I guess it was just one of those things that was meant to bring a smile but maybe a bit of a 'sensitivity' and probably felt like a criticism.....
