Two people have been killed after a monster truck with tractor-sized wheels ploughed into the crowd at a Dutch car show, with fears that the death toll could rise further.

Eighteen people were also injured in the disaster in the eastern city of Haaksbergen, with six seriously hurt, and the driver of the monster truck has reportedly been arrested.

Earlier reports said two adults and a child had been killed, but this number was later revised down to two. The ages of those who lost their lives has not yet been confirmed.

Clips of the accident posted on YouTube showed the truck swerving towards the crowd who had been watching behind a metal gate. Families with children and push chairs can be seen running to safety.

One man drops his phone and yells in shock as the truck heads towards near where he is standing.

The mayor of Haaksbergen, Hans Gerritsen, told Dutch broadcaster NOS that three people were killed and 15 to 30 more injured.

Six people had to be resuscitated, according to eyewitnesses..

Matthijs Holtrop said: "I see ten ambulances standing.

"The first phase of the emergency is still in full swing."

"I can imagine the number of casualties still rising."

The incident has prompted a huge response from emergency services, with crews attending from Germany. Two nearby hospitals implemented a disaster-management plan and an emergency hotline number was issued to the public.

The Red Cross and a church also provided help in the aftermath.

The organisers were swiftly criticised on social media over the accident.

One YouTube user wrote: “How can it be that there was only a small gate between the public and the monster? How stupid can the city and organizers of this be?”

The vehicle involved was said to be the ‘Sporty Car’, a giant pick-up truck with 1,500 horsepower - equivalent to a top-of-the range sportscar.

In October eight people were killed when another monster truck ploughed into spectators at a Mexican motor show.

Whoever organized that event should be in jail. That area it's driving in is tiny. It's like a motorboat in a swimming pool.

..that's horrendous, that area is tiny to be doing stunts like that and the parents pulling their babies and children out of the way..so tragic and so easily avoidable...
