View Full Version : Abolish Post Counts

They in no way benefit the forum and if anything they cause more harm than good (people spamming to get a higher count, threads asking for C&G posts to count, etc). The time has come to get rid of them altogether I feel. Sign below if you are with me in taking this monumental move forward.

Or just hide them from sight on the forum but have a page on your profile where you can check it if you want.

For: Allowing people to get the option of hiding their own post count.
Against: Everyone's post counts being taken away.

I agree. Put everyone on equal footing at first glance.
Agree with Reece
But what's the point in changing it anyway

No I think post count should stay.

I don't see how taking away post count will put everyone on an equal field?
I'd say your join date and how long you've been around has more to do with people not being equal.

Take the post count awards awards away too then, even off people who already have them.

You can tell who is spamming just by comparing their post count to their join date. There is no reason to get rid of either. But if you are going to get rid of post count then you should also get rid of join date. Or why don't you just delete the entire roster of users, and make us all sign up again with a fresh start.
I vote No.

I never knew they caused any arguments or grief ,can't say I take notice of how many times a member has posted.
..I just don't get it....we want more/we want them gone altogether......

I think some see post counts as a status symbol.
post counts don't bother me either way.

I'm sorry that you feel this way Braden, but I personally don't think either has any bearing on being 'equal'. we are all equal. A recently joined member's view is as interesting and relevant as someone's who has been a member for years. Any feeling of being an 'outsider' which a recent member might have, may come from the 'intimacy' sometimes present in banter between long standing members; 'in-jokes', the use of first names etc, but this is only natural, to be expected, and does not mean that those long standing members are being 'exclusive'.
I haven't been a member for all that long, and some of my posts do not always elicit responses, but that's natural, and the same thing sometimes happens to long standing members posts.
I enjoy reading all viewpoints on subjects which interest me and skip any on topics which don't, and I don't personally care how long someone has been a member - or what their post count is. :wavey:

I don't really care either way
I'd abolish all the people that have their first name as their username. Think of all the other Niamh's in the world who miss out because someone else has nicked their name.

I definitely see your point. There's no reason for anybody not to be equal, but in regards to someone's join date I feel like older members already have their friendships based, which is something you've already stated. That's not to say newer members wouldn't be included because TiBB is a welcoming community, I just think in terms of 'equality' a post count doesn't really have anything to do with in, in comparison to a join date, which like you said is expected to cause a bit of distance in terms of understanding user's sense of humour and interests.
I'm just content with how TiBB is and don't think anything needs to change.

Post counts are a classic for all forums, removing them would just be weird for me.

The only time posts counts are an issue in my experience is when we have an "abolish post counts" or a "make posts count in C&G" thread. I can't remember seeing instances of someone's low post count making them a target or someone's high post count giving them extra status.
why are we debating this when we can't even see if people mention or quote you :fist:

I agree with this, TiBB is doing fine as is.. so there's no need to uproot the current system.
