A hairdresser from Seaham had to have a finger amputated after catching a flesh-eating bug from a spider bite. Andrea Wallace was bitten by a False Widow spider. Doctors said the bite could have killed her. She was in hospital for ten weeks.

She has described the extent of her injuries, speaking of the moment she got to hospital and was rushed in where they immediately "cut her hand open" and had to act quickly because the poison was spreading to her heart.

The venomous attack, which left Andrea Wallace with a flesh eating condition, didn't happen in a remote destination but instead in a Sunderland park, right here in the North East.

She has shared her remarkable story with Gregg Easteal: [VIDEO IN LINK]: http://www.itv.com/news/tyne-tees/story/2014-09-29/seaham-woman-loses-finger-after-spider-bite/

This happened in my town and she was only sitting on the grass. Scared to death now D:

They "cut her hand open"... lmao people... they're using this kind of language to scare you! And it's working!

What that article actually says, between the lines, is this: The woman got a spider bite, but it wasn't serious until she got to hospital where she contracted a flesh-eating bug.

Calm down everyone.

I suppose this means more spiders being squashed by people having hysterics over nothing.

I'm beginning to suspect it isn't fact at all. I'm still awaiting the arrival of Little Boy Blue. He's been a no show.

Bang on.

Spiders seem to be the topic of the hour these last few years.

Deadly vipers are next, you watch.

Poor woman, she was lucky to just lose a finger, another couple of hours and she would have been a goner.
4 or 5 ops and 10 weeks in hospital.

These spiders have been in the UK since the 80's and in France and Spain for ages, there is more chance of getting a bad reaction to a bee or wasp sting. If you really want to worry, be afraid of the ticks and mozzies

I dunno bout that Livia - a friend of mine was in hospital this summer with a false widow bite - it happened when she was cleaning a flowerpot at the back of the pub she runs , within 30 mins her hand had swollen big time, then her arm started going black , she went to hosp and was in for 10 days ! she has recently had to have a hole drilled into the bone in her hand as the bite had got into the bone = Thats pretty scary

Don't worry about it, it's much worse for the spider. Poor thing walks into it's own death, all you get is a tasty midnight snack. :hehe:

I know someone who almost died from a wasp sting. I'm going to try not to overreact to this story.
