Should those released by the court of appeal after a wrongful conviction be billed for food and lodgings for their time inside ?

This is what has happened to those cleared of the Carl Bridgewater murder. The Home office has said it will claw back 25% of their compensation, as they would have had those expenses anyway if they had been free.

Absolutely not! If they are innocent and cleared by the court it is not their fault they were convicted and to suggest they pay for their keep while in there is ridiculous.

Rather than 'having those expenses' on the outside, they have in fact been deprived of earnings for thier time inside.

That's just adding insult to injury.

How are they expected to find the money to pay anyway. Prisoners don't get paid for being in prison.

It is to be recovered from damages awarded for wrongful conviction.
