Tried doing this a few years back and it took off at first but eventually died out, and I think it might have been attempted a couple of times since then but I don't recall it ever being a success.. but might as well try again. In short:
- Once about 6-7 people sign up the first film can get picked
- People will have Monday-Saturday to watch that weeks film
- New movies will be picked on a Sunday
- Make sure any film is available to watch somewhere online for free or on Netflix or something, because I doubt many would actually go out and pay for it
- To make sure the film isn't something ****e like Disaster Movie, it must be rated above a 6.0 on www.imdb.com
For November, as the year is coming to a close, I thought it'd be good to make it 2014 movies only, and for December christmas movies only.. Open to suggestions though.

If we're sticking with 2014 movies for November then this is probably a good place to check out - http://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/bestofrt/?year=2014

Great stuff, I will have a look now!
I'm undecided between 'Boyhood' and 'The Other Woman'. What do you lot think? I think it should be Boyhood though, iconic movie of the year, and number 1 on Rotten Tomatoes for this year. Plus i've only seen half of it so i've been meaning to watch it anyways!

hahaha Matt, great Boyhood it is folks :)

Boyhood Review :
I actually didn't know alot about this film before watching it only that I'd heard it was good so I was surprised that they used the same actors to play (all the characters) but obviously more interestingly the kids in the film. So it's definitely very unique, i read afterwards it took them 12 years to make it? That's amazing
In theory it sounds like a pretty boring film just following a boy around from age 5 doing all the normal kind of things kids do growing up but I really really enjoyed it, you almost felt like you got to watch someones whole childhood and what made them the people they are, play out right in front of you.
The last scene with his mother when she had a bit of a meltdown at him packing up for college made me a bit sad and I could really relate to what she was saying
Anyway, I loved this movie, it was so different from anything I've ever seen, so simple eventhough it was probably pretty complicated for them to make it over that stretch of time

I re-watched this today.
It's a marvel of a film, the fact you see the actors grow up before your eyes is amazingly strange. It must have been a logistical nightmare to handle but I think that all that presumed hassle that the crew went through to make this film was worth it. It's very close to being a perfect film. Rewatching it did highlight some things for me that I wasn't keen on though, I felt like we knew the core family thoroughly but most of the other characters are basically throwaways, which is understandable as it'd be a nightmare to organise periods of filming over 12 years for actors other than the core family. Also I think some of the pop culture references were a little forced and clumsy, we could tell simply by looking at the actors that time had passed so we didn't need things like the small scene about Lady Gaga to mark the passing of time. It also does tend to drag near the end, I think they could have cut the last 10 minutes or so and the ending would have still had the same effect.
Aside from that (which is basically nitpicking anyway). It's damn near perfect. The acting is great and the story felt very authentic. It's a very well made film and an achievement. I do hope it get recognised during awards season.

It was 3 stories about life I guess. From a crew of thugs who seem to have no future, to a gang-banger looking to be rehabilitated by romance, and an aimless young father who simply needs to grow up, the director brings urban life to the movie screens without simplifying, preaching or pandering.
Fishburne as the movie’s moral center tries to impart responsibility and awareness in his son of the realities of life as a Black male in America.
Otherwise it’s a sadly optimistic and touching classic that confidently conveys a coherent solemn mood of a modern American wasteland.
Any film with Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur and Tyrese Gibson is ok with me.

Boyhood - 10/10
One of the very few films I'd give a 10 to. I think they got the balance perfectly between time spend on childhood and adult life, and I really liked the small references like the Gaga video and the Soulja Boy song, not necessarily to let us know what year they were in but just because it made it more realistic that the characters would have came across these things, because I'm pretty sure EVERYONE did. I loved the conversation between the kid and the dad as well about if they'd ever make a new Star Wars movie, because obviously they are now making one. Ethan Hawke was brilliant as he always is in these types of movies (the 'Before' franchise is quite similar) and I hope he keeps doing them, Patricia Arquette was also great as where the two kids and the guy playing the abusive step father.

The idea behind the film is breathtaking. I really hope that more people make movies like this. It's almost like one of those shows were they visit a group of people every few years.
As mentioned by Locke, one of the highlights is the ordinariness of the conversations. Most movies are very plot focused and kinda keep you moving relentlessly along. This was the opposite, it's kinda meandered across years and allows you to just enjoy the lives of other people.
Lastly I thought it ended at perhaps the perfect point. Brilliant movie

Very few movies get a 10/10 from me and that will probably show throughout film club (for however long it lasts anyway), like stated above, they got the mix of child and adult just right and the soundtrack throughout the film was wonderful as well, they featured Arcade Fire twice so it's one of the greatest films of the past few years just on that basis alone tbh oh and I was a sucker for them featuring Harry Potter as well <3. I nearly did drop an extra mark off tho for the longevity of the film but I blame that on my concentration span so chose not to do so.

Was just about to head off to bed but decided to give it a watch instead, great decision in the end. It was interesting to see the stages throughout childhood in a movie using the same person/people throughout. It was kind of horrible to see him going from the shy innocent kid straight to the rebel type teen with the piercings and smoking but it was good to see him soon snapping out of it all and getting on with life again. In the end it felt like we had watched him growing over a much longer period than 12 years. Brilliant movie though, never watched anything like it before.

Finally got round to watching this this morning, and I'm glad that I did. A different take on a film about growing up, I felt really connected with these characters much more than what I do in other films. Seeing Mason falling into a bad phase but then coming out on top was rewarding as well. Yeah, for a film of its length, it managed to keep my interest.

loved it :flutter: instant classic. Ridiculously ambitious, but refreshingly down-to-earth and loveable and relatable and endearing. It made me feel pretty sad just because the film's main bond seemed to be the father/son one, and I've missed out on that, but it was sweet.

I've already seen the Fault in Our Stars and I'd give it a 6/10... I was expecting it to be worse and the cast is really good, but idk, I just can't look past John Green's obnoxious storytelling and the whole "let's make out in an Anne Frank museum because it's seizing the day!" balls. It was pretty nauseating and just a kind of "yeah there's beauty in the world when there's cancer" message and that's great and everything but ugh. Too teenmovieish  I probably sound harsher than a 6 LOL but Shailene Woodley is a great actress and the supporting cast was good too... didn't go too much on Ansel Elgort, he was just a sort-of token dreamboat doofus I guess, and oh GOD the cigarette 'metaphor' PLEASE SHUT UP. But no, nice acting, nice little story, nice message, but irritating.

The Fault in Our Stars - 6/10
I liked it, but having watched my fair share of Simp movies a few months back I don't think it's as good as some others in this genre (Remember Me, Keith, etc). I thought Shailene & the guy playing Augustus worked well together and were both really likeably in their roles, Willem Dafoe played a great horrible bastard as well. I knew that the ending was supposed to be really sad and that it leaves most people (women) crying but I didn't really think it was that emotional at all.. I mean I wanted Augustus to live but it was nowhere near as bad as main characters deaths in most other movies. But yeah, it's an enjoyable film and I actually liked all of the characters which is pretty rare. Plus the author is a Liverpool fan so that's always a bonus.

Saw this the other week, I liked it and thought Shailene and Ansel worked well together. Didn't think it was too sad, maybe because I already knew the ending :spin: I loved the character of Augustus. Would watch it again in a few years, also didn't really like John Greens little bit in it :/ even if he was on screen for a minute

8/10 - Finally plucked up the courage and watched this film. The main female and male :clap1: Their acting was spot on! The storyline was really good and isn't like your typical love story film. Some scenes did make me cry a little but I won't discuss them on the review because I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

6 reviews so far, I expect double figures by this time tomorrow night :idc:
..sorry I didn't post ratings yet, Locke but I did watch them both...
..Boyhood 10/10...just really quite perfect although I do agree that it could have been around 20 minutes shorter...it really was a 'nostalgia' journey in that I could relate both to them as teenagers and also to the mum as well....'I'm so happy you were born' as he was going off with his dad..yeah, that's me..much to the embarrassment of my children...I loved how Ethan had a haircut, grew a moustache and became 'sensible dad'...I also loved the conversation they had when he sold his classic car.....loved, loved, loved it....
..Fault in Our Stars....hmmm, really not my kind of movie at all although the two young leads were very endearing so that made it a bit more watchable and Willem Dafoe is always so watchable...5/10, I guess....

8/10. Didn't think I would like it as i'm not too keen on films like this but it was pretty well executed. I really liked the performance of Ansel Elgort in particular. Having not read the book, I suppose I was less critical about it, but I did really enjoy the film. My main criticism though was that I got bored and just wanted it to end towards the end

I don't think it's terrible, I just think it fails to capture the magic of the book. The 2 main characters (Hazel and Gus) seemed 2-dimensional and not as raw'n'rull as their book forms. Idk. It's supposed to be a tragic love story and it felt more like a romcom to me, which would be fine if it was funny and still worked with the overall theme but it never really made me laugh. I also feel like the book was trying to appeal to the tumblr/twitter-fanbase which made moments like kissing in Anne Frank's house feel less emotive and more nauseating saccharine.

I do like a good romance and the acting was quite impressive, Shaileen in particular, can't wait to watch some more of her work, but it all fell a bit flat for me, the storyline was sad blah blah and the ending especially but it just didn't entice me like a superb movie does, I kept dipping in and out.

I'd give Fault 7/10 I liked the two leads, they did a great job, I didn't feel sorry for them. Also there is a saying or something about never meeting your idols, cause they will inevitably disappoint you, so I really liked how the author was a total asshole.
There was a few bits that I wasn't too fond of, however they were little things I'm not gonna dwell on. Overall, despite the sadness, I found it entertaining.

I thought it was pretty good although it did waste the potential of it's pretty amazing cast.
Bryan Cranston's role in the film is basically an extended cameo while Elizabeth Olsen's talents are wasted on a non entity of a character. Aaron Johnson's character was likable but I just spent a lot of the film wishing that Bryan Cranston's character was the protagonist instead.
I liked how sparingly they used Godzilla although I would have preferred to see more of the fights between him and the MUTOs rather than, for the most part, only seeing the aftermath. Overall I thought it was a good Blockbuster film although the script had a few really dumb bits in it (if the MUTOs are basically walking EMPs then why the **** would you keep flying planes around it?). Although I've got some complaints, I really did enjoy it a lot.
I'll rate it a (very good) 7/10.

Godzilla - 7/10
I was surprised at how good this actually was, I wasn't expecting much from it. The actual scenes of Godzilla are amazing, especially the fighting scenes with it. Had been a little disappointed at first when I thought the MUTO was Godzilla because it was nothing compared to the previous film adaptions of the monster, but obviously that was put to rest when Godzilla actually turned up. It does have its flaws though, the main one being the character development. I was really surprised when Bryan Cranston was killed off so early into the film because I thought he was the main character, but at least when he was alive they got their worth out of him, I think Elizabeth Olsen is #1 when it comes to the upcoming actresses at the moment and she literally didn't have a single thing to do throughout the entire movie. The monster though >>> It really ****ed those two imposters up.

9/10.
Godzilla being turned into a hero figure is wonderful :flutter: And the fight scenes with the MUTO were epic, who knew Godzilla breathed blue fire (I'm sure it's not fire but w/e). Pretty lovely human story at the middle of it all, much better than the 97 film anyway, and I loved the stockier, badass Godzilla a lot.
I do wish Cranston and Binoche were used more but they were great in their brief time on screen, Ken Watanabe is always great too. Only thing I'd have liked a bit more is that it wasn't always so foggy and smokey, but hey, that's San Francisco for you.
On par with Pacific Rim really, both hugely entertaining, awe-inspiring movies.
Favourite scene was probably the sky-dive into the middle of the ruined city, loved the score and the visual effects of that.

it was a different take on it, unexpected that Godzilla was the hero so that was good. Would have liked to have seen more scenes with Godzilla actually in it and I was surprised that they killed off Bryan Cranston so quickly and his wife as well, I can't remember that actress' name but she's a decent enough actress, was hardly worth her while being in it lol anyway it was good enough. ..I think of a 'type' it was probably more than 7/10 as in it was one of the better monster movies I've seen and far better than the first one, which actually is nothing in comparison...and it was far better than Fault in Our Stars for me because I'd rather be entertained for two hours than depressed...it was a hard one to rate because it was good but nothing really new in comparison to Boyhood which was a 'first' so for me a far better movie...good choice though and it had been sat there for ages so it made me finally watch it...

..I don't know whether Bill Murray will be nominated for an Academy Award for this but I hope that he is...he is stunning and perfect as 'grumpy old' Vincent. The cast in general was perfect and very likeable..Melissa McCarthy as Maggie and Naomi Watts as Daka, the 'lady of the night'....but obviously the main focus is the relationship between Vincent and Oliver which is extremely touching...it has the perfect balance of humour and serious moments and yeah, I did cry toward the end when Oliver paid his tribute to him...ok, probably just a typical 'grumpy old man' type movie but really endearing and just very 'feel good'...

In a way it's really on par with Boyhood...
I mean the structure's pretty predictable... unlikely friendship, grumpy man we don't know really well, suddenly good friends, great highs winning that bet and a fight, sudden crash to earth, realisation of Vin's wife's condition, boy's mom in all sorts of trouble, fallout of the main characters, and then slow but sure return to happy ending
But the performances were really fantastic, I hope Murray is Oscar-nominated for this, at the very least. I was happy to see McCarthy in a role other than her typecast (loud obnoxious messy woman) and she was really great in this, and the kid's one of those rare, likeable, not-annoying child actors  Also loved Daka's character.
And the story was really sweet. Will definitely be buying this on DVD/bluray when it's out, it was just naturally affecting and made me laugh/tearful in equal measure

St. Vincent - 7/10
I hadn't really been expecting this to be so funny, Bill Murray's character was hilarious. So many great performances as well from pretty much the entire main cast, I think Naomi Watts' was my favourite though, wouldn't have even known it was her if I hadn't seen her name on the IMDb cast list. I think my favourite scene was just after he had the stroke and they were showing him the pictures and he was supposed to say the words, and the picture was of a tree and he said "money", and then the next one was of a fence and he said "you broke my fence too". Have got a feeling this will get overlooked when the Oscars come around but hopefully it doesn't.

St Vincent gets a rating of 8.24 based on 8 reviews.
..St Vincent...8.5/10...
..I don't know whether Bill Murray will be nominated for an Academy Award for this but I hope that he is...he is stunning and perfect as 'grumpy old' Vincent.
This was a wonderful film and loved watching it. The cast was perfect, I thought Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy and Naomi Watts were brilliant. The little boy was lovely and liked him with Bill Murray. Funny in parts and a sweet ending.
8/10
9/10.
St Vincent
aw I loved this film, great cast, love Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy and Chris O'Dowd and Naomi Watts character was really funny too, my favourite in the film actually. It was sad, funny and heart warming in all the right amounts. Loved it 9/10
9/10
Just a really solid film, well acted by all and just very entertaining despite the cliche set up.
8/10
This was bloody marvelous. Bill Murray was spectacular in the role and it had a charming feel. Naomi Watts was in it as well and I pretty much love everything she does, what a goddess.
7.5/10 for St Vincent
Didn't think it was that laugh out loud funny but pretty humorous throughout the whole thing, good feel good film with a nice story though fairly predictable and didn't feel that original. Naomi Watt's character must have been the best female character I've seen in a comedy for ages
Looks like people are starting to lose interest now so I think it's time to pull out the christmas flms.
Niamh came up on the randomizer too, so her choice

Calvary
It was a very strange film, the whole way through I kept thinking it was like reading one of the religion threads in Serious debates. It was an ok film, the performances were very good I thought but the story itself was a bit flimsy. I'll give it 6.5/10
..Calvary...
..wow, I don't know what to say about this movie/definitely not a feel good movie...it was so bleak with Father James as the only 'light' really in a town where there was no faith, not specifically in the church/religion but more there didn't seem to be any faith in anything/each other/the community/humanity...his daughter who (I think) had obviously tried to commit suicide or had suicidal thoughts, obviously the 'mystery' character who had been sexually abused through his childhood by a priest and his wife who seemed to have no self worth/the local landowner who had everything but cared for nothing, not even himself..the old guy whose priority was to ensure that he could end his life when the time was right and the guy who owned the bar who seemed to have a huge resentment and hate toward the church...oh and the lady whose husband was killed...and Father James seemed to be losing himself in the lack of hope in others and yet still his only focus in his 'last week' was to try to 'heal his flock'..to do the best he could to help with their hollow lives...just a 'good priest' and a good man...even though the ending was predicted in the first few minutes, I still found it quite shocking and I didn't quite get when his daughter went to visit him in prison..was that a 'forgiveness thing'...anyway, even though it was such a bleak movie/the characters were so 'real' and so absorbing that I was totally spellbound by it and Brendan Gleeson was superb as always so I'm going to give it an 8/10...

It was an excellent film, I thought the casting and writing was very strong and it was very atypical. It's depressing and grim but I think the subject matter is handled well. I don't really want to go into plot details otherwise I'd spoil it but I think it's well worth a watch.

FINALLY got round to watching Calvary.
It was beautifully shot and simultaneously grim. The story was morbid and depressing... some of the characters were terribly irritating (that gay guy by the jukebox :fist:) but I don't know... the lighting and colours were oddly beautiful... which isn't something I pick up on often (last film I remember feeling this about was 'Drive')... and for some reason it just gripped me. I'd give it an 8/10.
Maybe we could have a seasonal one like Dezzy said for the month of October. A horror special.
I'd be up for that if others are and if it does OK Christmas is around the corner for another batch.
Ignore that I put that on the wrong thread
