I am thinking of buying my dad some shares in his favourite football team for christmas.
I have had mixed opinion about this from my family  but I think he would like it. I think he'd like to be a "shareholder" nothing major but I still think he'd like the title
what do you think? help
Personally I'd really like to be a shareholder of my favourite football team, I think it's a good idea for a xmas gift.

cheers, I think i probably will go ahead with it. I can't think of anything else and I do think he'd be pleased..
3 family members think its a rubbish idea
I don't see it being a rubbish idea if he loves his football club.
He'll get money off stuff and all.

Hiya Diablo,
I worked for one of the biggest stockbrokers in the country for 5 years up till 7 months ago. Lots of people give shares in football clubs as gifts. You would have to pay a commission to the broker... the normal commission is about 1% of the sale.
Its a reasonably easy process and certificate normally takes about 2 weeks to be processed.
If you want to buy some shares for your dad then you would have to send a letter with a cheque saying what club you wish to buy into and how many shares or the amount of pounds you wish the purchase to amount to plus that’s it is a gift. If you specify that its a surprise for Christmas they can make the certificate in your dads name and send it to your address. Or some brokers will make sure it has your dads name and his address then send you the cert instead of it going to him but you have to express your wishes clearly in the letter. I'd be happy to recommend a broker and give you some advice on the process if you u2u me but cannot recommend if it’s a sound investment.

 sounds like you know your stuff Kizwiz. I have made enquiries and I am happy with everything, it will be in my dads name and I can get it sent to my address because its a gift. i'm going ahead with it against advice of some family members.
I think my dad would like the idea of being a shareholder, he is massive fan.
