Last night I watched a documentary on the CI Chanel on Sky. A bastard in Dumfries met a 56 year old woman through a 'Lonely Heart's' column and started a relationship with her.

She was a very youthful and vivacious woman who had her own home etc who suddenly disappeared, and her handbag, passport credit cards etc, and some personal effects and jewelry subsequently were found to be missing from her home.

This new 'boyfriend' was the last person to be with her and to see her alive and he told the police that she'd '"gone off with an Irishman she'd met". He also told the cops that he'd 'sold' the car he owned up until the time she disappeared, but couldn't remember who to.

He was obviously lying his head off but the cops couldn't trace the car and the guy stayed free.

Over the next 9 months, the missing woman's credit card was being used to make withdrawals of her cash from various ATM's in the Cumbria area, and on different CCTV footage from the banks the man making the withdrawals was clearly this same bastard.

He denied it was him and - for some strange reason - the cops couldn't press charges?

Anyway - about 10 to 11 months after the woman went missing - the cops actually caught the bastard driving the car he'd 'sold', stopped him and found her badly decomposed, partly mummified body wrapped in taped polythene, carpet and more taped polythene, in the boot, along with her handbag, personal effects passport and jewelry etc.

The arrogant bastard denied everything and went 'Not Guilty' but changed his plea at the last minute to 'Culpable Homicide' - less than murder.

He got an incredibly lowly 8 year sentence - because his age, previous record etc was taken into consideration - and served just 4 years!

The reason I have gone off topic and recounted this, is because it is now time to thoroughly review our Criminal Justice system, because over the past 50 years, the 'bleeding hearts' have rendered it a huge 'joke' - with the laugh squarely on the innocent victims and their tragic families.

There is no longer any deterrent or punishment and we are now - consistently - rewarding the perpetrators and punishing the victims of crime.

More realistic sentences should be handed down, and the death penalty restored for certain categories and types of murder - including cop killers, child killers and terrorist murders -- especially of our 'off duty' serving soldiers.

The murderers of this off duty cop know full well that even if caught, 5, 6, or 7 years in one of Her Majesty's Hotels - with all its many luxuries, such as; civilian clothing, laptops, mobile phones, gym and leisure facilities and all the drugs, drink and sex they could wish for - is hardly a 'punishment' which they cannot endure -- especially when the bastards can wear their 'Cop Killer' tag like a much-prized 'Badge of Honour'.

What kind of country have we now made for ourselves when we put our soldiers on trial for murder and shame murdered soldiers and cops and their grieving families by handing out ridiculously lenient sentences to their murderers?

Is 5, 6, 7, years of hotel confinement all that a cop's, or a soldier's, or an innocent civilian's life is really worth to us?

If we do not start to support those who risk their lives to protect us. by protecting them against their 'would- be' killers in the form of sentences which both deter and punish, then we might find that there will soon be no one foolish enough to join our armed services or police -- then we will be fecked.

Thanks Arista - I note that it it says, 'three cops' were attacked by a 'group' of men. I didn't expect it to be a 'one on one' - it never is - even when it's innocent non-aggressive, 17 year old students who are knifed or kicked to death by yobs outside nightclubs virtually every weekend now, it's always a gang or more than one.

Fecking tragic and oh so senseless.
