For all his exuberant mannerisms, superfluous rhetoric and apathetic attitude towards voting, it appears Russell Brand has scored his first big campaign win.

The US investors who planned to evict scores of families from the New Era estate in East London so that they could build an up-market development there are on the verge of selling up and moving on.

And the buyer they are thinking of taking up? An affordable housing provider.

Westbrook Partners are thought to be close to sealing the deal with London’s deputy mayor, Richard Blakeway, and the elected mayor of Hackney, Jules Pipe, after negotiation talks this week, the Guardian has reported.

City Hall apparently expects the transfer to be complete before Christmas.

The news follows a vocal campaign by Brand and the residents of the New Era estate, that included multiple street demonstrations, a petition signed by thousands and a march on Downing Street that ended with this rant at a Channel 4 News presenter going viral:

Funny how he is doing something for others for nothing more than a weekly rubbishing in the press, and in all fairness he's doing more than the well paid representatives of said people though....

what do you mean "us Americans"? it's got nothing to do with us.

WTF has Russia or China or France or Brazil done better than we have? It's just as much their problem as it is America's. You make no sense.

It shows the power and influence celebrities have.

It's like when Joanna Lumley campaigned to have the law changed so that Gurkhas could settle in the UK.

so you think without russell brand, this wouldn't have happened?

bull;****, this happened because of the PUBLIC, the dumb verbose twat just latched his name onto it. imho.

BUT, if it really did only happen because of russell brand, you should be ashamed of your democracy.

If Russel doubled/tripled the tax amount on the rich and allowed families on the breadline to be exempt from tax, he'd be a hero. Throw a gigantic 'outsourcing' tax on businesses that are based in the UK who outsourced labour to India/China etc to top it all off and he'd make a great PM, and the thing is I could kind of imagine him doing stuff like that, he'd certainly be better than any of the absolute penguins we've had in power since forever.

Some fairly typical views in this thread. You can't speak up for the poor if you're poor because no one is listening, and you can't speak up for the poor if you're rich because "you're not poor". In other words, no one can speak up for the poor?

Decriminalising taking drugs is not the same as Decriminalising selling drugs. If people want to take drugs then they will take them. People get started on drugs because their lives are **** and miserable, not the other way around, and the criminal element of the world of drugs is actually part of what CAUSES people to be out battering / killing. Tackling the issue of drugs as crime isn't working. It's never worked. The only thing that will work is improving the mental health of the population from the ground up starting in childhood.

Also, just to add, in terms of people being attacked... You generally don't have to be worried about the high / stoned ones. They're irritating, yes, but in terms of aggression, it's the DRUNKS that you have to look out for. Good old alcohol. The number of attacks and assault by drunk people completely dwarfs attacks by people on other drugs. Alcohol is an awful drug. It makes people angry, impatient and violent whilst simultaneously removing impulse control. Awesome.
