View Full Version : My cat...

... I took him to the vet a few hours ago. He was fine one minute, then suddenly he was vomiting and struggling to breathe. He was unsteady on his feet and making weird noises. He's breathing through his mouth with his tongue sticking out and his heart is racing.
The vet has put him in an oxygen tent and is going to x-ray him once he stabilises a little bit. He told us to go home and wait for his call...
I'm so worried. :(

He's 9.
I thought he had ingested something poisonous.. like antifreeze or something... we live in a village, and he rakes and roams all over the place, so it is possible he could get to something like that.. even if the person didn't put it down on purpose..
But, the vet seems to think it might be fluid in his lungs... he says it can be a number of things and would rather wait til he can do the tests to find out. He's never been sick before at all.. so this is all new for him.
My vet was just closing the clinic for the day and he was supposed to take a family member to the airport when I called in, and he got someone else to do it so that he could treat my cat... I know he is in good hands.. he's a good vet, and he does really care about his four-legged clients..
I just wish I knew what was happening... it's so hard to sit and wait for the phone to ring..
Thanks for the kind thoughts though Kizzy, Caitlin, James & LT.. x

if you need someone to talk to, im here... you were brilliant with me 7 months ago when we lost our puss, and I'd love to help you too. but the first few days are the worst. its the worst heartache imaginable, but it does get better after a few days.
the only thing you need right now is time...

yeah... she's pretty great tbh. It's like they know that you've made their lives so much better.
yes. you must get another cat... only when you are ready though.
I remember the first time we let Meowzie stay in the house. She was sniffing around everywhere and climbing on everything and I got emotional because I thought 'she shouldnt be here, puss should'... but now i'm used to it
i mean, I still cry about it sometimes. I was in a popeyes with my dad and his gf the other day and i mentioned the lion king and burst out crying...
but yeah, time is a healer.

Awww I'm so sorry to hear this, hope you and the rest of your family are ok. As you say, anyone with pets know they become part of the family pretty much and it's incredibly hard to say goodbye.
For what it's worth you've obviously been a great owner and put the cats welfare first and most of all you've made your cats 9 years comfy and content which as pretty much paradise for them.

Genuinely sorry to hear this Lily. It is so difficult to lose a beloved pet. Try to console yourself that you gave him/her a good life full of love and care, comfort yourself with your memories, and go out and get another pet as soon as you're over grieving, to lavish all that love and affection you have on.

Terrible news.. Sounds like the exact same thing that happened to my dog years ago, the worst part is how sudden it all is
Exactly this. He was 100% fine yesterday morning, then suddenly he was terribly ill. Vet told me that animals hide it for as long as they possibly can, which is why there are not any symptoms until they are almost too far gone..
I am grateful for my vet.. he is very dedicated, and I know he would have done everything possible.. He said he even tried some new measures because he was younger than the ones who usually present with this kind of thing.. but nothing was helping him.
The family want to go into the SSPCA centre today... I'm not sure if it is too soon, but the kids have never had a house without a cat.. and it doesn't really feel like a home without one.. and knowing there are homeless cats sitting in a shelter, maybe it is the right thing to do.. My head is a bit of a mess right now..

We went to see him.. the vet told us all the stuff he had tried... after he called me yesterday he took the breathing tube out and was about to try one last thing before he put him to sleep, but he said that as soon as the tube came out, he just stopped breathing.. poor wee soul.. At least he is at peace now.
We did go out to the animal shelter.. there are so many pets there needing homes.. there was one wee girl kitty who was particularly friendly.. so we might adopt her.. I will keep you all posted...
Thanks so much for all your kind messages x

Your dream must have really freaked you out Caitlin. Sometimes it's so real and you wake up and it really disorientates you.. I hate that..
Bailey had a best pal. He started turning up at my door every day. I thought he was a stray. I started giving him food and cuddles. He is jet black, so I named him Sooty. He was the only cat in the neighbourhood (and there are a LOT of cats where I live) that Bailey would actually tolerate. Bailey was a scrapper. If another cat so much as looked in our garden, he would go after them.
Sooty was only the second cat (outside of our own cats) I had ever seen him being nice to. The first one was a female called Toots who lived in the next street. She used to hang out on the back fence waiting for him to come outside. He did the same with her, then they would go roaming around the neighbourhood. One time she ingested something poisonous and took seriously ill. Her owner came straight round to me to tell me to check Bailey cos she knew they were always together. Soon after, Bailey started acting weird, so we took him to the vet. He hadn't ingested much of it, so after some meds and fluids, and a few hours rest he was fine. Toots had to spend 3 days in the vets, but she was eventually okay as well. It was quite scary for her owner.
Toots (and her owner) moved to another town a few years ago, and Bailey went back to hating all of the cats. Until Sooty.
Anyway, I was waiting for the bus to college one day last year, and I saw a guy out at his car and Sooty was wandering round his legs. I called over to him and asked if that was his cat. He told me that his name was Tom, and they had moved house recently and that he just goes back and forth to the old place. My house is right in the middle between their old house and their new one. I told him he had been visiting me daily and I had thought he was a stray. He said that he likes to roam around visiting people. So that mystery was solved. He wasn't a stray. His name wasn't Sooty. But, I still call him that and he still visits every day. Although, once I found out he had a home, I stopped feeding him in case he decided to move in with me. He usually sleeps on top of my rabbit hutch as the sun shines right over there.
He was with Bailey when he took ill and he saw Bailey struggling to breathe. He came around yesterday morning again, and sat on the rabbit hutch meowing. I guess he knows. But he was back around again this morning, so I guess he likes us as much as he liked Bailey. I hope our next cat likes him too.
Anyway, I just thought I would share that story..

Our new addition was picked up in the street in November 2014 and taken to a local vet. When the owner couldn't be located, she was handed over to the SSPCA. Their vet checked her over, micro-chipped her and gave her all the up to date vaccinations, etc and put her up for rehoming. We went along to the shelter, and she was the first one who stood out to us.. The vet estimates she is between 5 and 8. She is really dainty though..
We've had her since Monday and she's still a wee bit shy but she does enjoy attention, so I'm sure she won't be shy for long..
Our house wasn't a home without a cat.. It's a home again. :)

Awww Ben.. that's cute.. :)
She came with a name... the rescue centre had named her Sally. So, we just kept it. It kinda suits her and she answers to it a wee bit too...
She's very affectionate when it suits her, but then she just scurries off and hides upstairs. She's found a spot under my kid's bed. He has a mid-sleeper and there's loads of stuff bundled up under it, so it's a good wee hidey-hole for her when she feels like it.
One of my daughter's friends had a rescue cat and she said it spent 2 weeks under the couch (aside from eating etc.) then it started to be more sociable. It's probably common with cats who have had a rough life..
I think she'll be a proper little spoilt cat once she settles in. :)
..she's totally adorable, Lily.....and Sally is a lovely name..yeah, give her a few weeks and you'll all be fitting into her schedule just nicely...
