Actor David Tennant will play a detective in new drama Broadchurch, about the death of a young boy in a seaside town, ITV1 has announced.

The eight-part series has been penned by Doctor Who and Torchwood writer Chris Chibnall.

Tennant leads an ensemble cast featuring Rev star Olivia Colman and Will Mellor.

Arthur Darvill, who plays current Doctor Who Matt Smith's sidekick Rory, will appear as the town priest.

Best known for his own stint as the Doctor, Tennant will star as out-of-town Detective Inspector Alec Hardy, who is set to clash with a local officer played by Colman.

The actress found fame as Sophie in Channel 4 comedy Peep Show, before going on to star in BBC comedy Rev, Twenty Twelve and films including The Iron Lady and Tyrannosaur.

Vicky McClure, who played Lol in This is England and recently starred with Tennant in BBC1's mainly improvised drama True Love, also features.

Writer Chibnalll called it a story of "scale and intimacy" in which the characters' lives are "laid bare".

"Broadchurch focuses on a small British community which finds itself at the eye of a storm," said writer Chibnall.

"In the wake of one boy's death, the residents come under scrutiny and suspicion."

Also joining the cast is actress Jodie Whittaker, who starred in British alien comedy Attack the Block.

The show will be filmed on location in Dorset and Portishead near Bristol later this year.

Tennant is also set to feature in a forthcoming BBC Four drama, The Spies Of Warsaw, based on the best-selling novel by Alan Furst.

When Pauline left the police station after admitting the whole story about her husband/children, Ellie asked her "how could you not know what was going on in your own home?", possibly hinting at her husband or son being involved in it. I think the bald guy is too obvious now after the last episode, wouldn't be a surprise if it was him. The vicar would be my other guess, or maybe even the dad??

Shaun

I wasn'r surprised that Nige was Susan's son, I suspected that a few weeks ago anyway. I thought Nige was the killer until they made it too massively obvious like a red herring, but there again that could be a sort of double bluff by them. I doubt it is the Vicar as he handed the computer in to the Police for them to try and recover anything from it.

In one of the Broadchurch interviews, one of the actors said words to the effect that when it is revealed you will see how all the clues pointed to the person responsible. But a good murder story will usually have clues pointing to many a suspect anyway, so that doesn't help really.

So as Broadchurch reaches its conclusion, I will have a last guess at who it might be. I am guessing at Nige still, or the Policewoman's Husband after she said in so many words to Susan, how could you not know you were living with someone like that, as I think those words could come back to haunt the Policewoman now, or maybe it could even be Danny's Dad's girlfriend, jealous of their bond maybe?

Detective drama Broadchurch has been commissioned for a second series, ITV has announced.

The "whodunnit" starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman will go into production next year but details of the cast are being tightly guarded.

The climax of the investigation into the death of 11-year-old Danny Latimer was watched on 22 April by a peak audience of 8.9 million viewers.

Writer Chris Chibnall said he was "gobsmacked" by the figures.

"There was another very different story we could tell afterwards. I'm really thrilled we're going to tell that story too," he said.

Set in the fictional seaside Dorset community of Broadchurch, the drama had bookmakers running odds on who they thought was responsible for the young boy's death.

ITV's director of television, Peter Fincham, said the channel was "delighted" to be commissioning the second series.

"From the moment the murder scene was discovered, viewers became gripped by the series, and we've been genuinely thrilled by the audience response," he said.

The series, produced by Kudos Film and Television, also starred Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Vicky McClure, Pauline Quirke and Matthew Gravelle.

Details of the cast and storyline for the follow-up have not been announced yet.

Olivia Colman has confirmed she is returning for the new series of Broadchurch.

Colman starred opposite David Tennant in the original eight-part series, which followed the hunt for the killer of an 11-year-old boy found dead on a Dorset beach. Broadchurch was a huge hit for ITV when it aired in March and April of this year, drawing a massive audience of over 10 million for its final episode in which the murderer's identity is revealed.

ITV has revealed that series two of Broadchurch will go into production next year (2014) but plot details are being kept under wraps. Asked at a press event yesterday (November 6) whether she will be back for the next batch of episodes, the the BBC reports, Colman replied: "I don't want to get myself in trouble but I think it's set in stone."

Colman also confirmed she is not reprising her role as DS Ellie Miller in the US remake of Broadchurch - although David Tennant is set to star again as DI Alec Hardy.

two bits of excellent news.

I caught this when it was airing on ITV Encore because I missed it the first time round. I put on my planner and I started watching an episode every few nights. I watched the last four episodes last night.

Absolutely incredible drama. The story was great and the cast were just phenomenal. Olivia was outstanding.

I suspected Ellie's husband quote early on but I dismissed it because he was the husband of the detective on the case. I did think it was him again after Ellie asked Susan 'how could she not know?'

Can't wait for series 2. I hope it's as great as the first series :worship:

The first glimpse of Broadchurch's forthcoming second series have been revealed.

The two unbranded coast line shots were aired during The X Factor on ITV last night (November 9). Both clips featured the phrase "The end is where it begins." There is no return date for the series, which will see David Tennant and Olivia Colman reprise their roles as detectives.

Colman starred opposite David Tennant in the original eight-part series, which followed the hunt for the killer of an 11-year-old boy found dead on a Dorset beach. Broadchurch was a huge hit for ITV when it aired in March and April 2013, drawing a massive audience of over 10 million for its final episode in which the murderer's identity is revealed.

Asked at a press event in November 2013 whether she will be back for the next batch of episodes, the BBC reports, Colman replied: "I don't want to get myself in trouble, but I think it's set in stone."

Colman did not, however, reprise her role as DS Ellie Miller in the US remake of Broadchurch – however, David Tennant does star in the US version which was retitled Gracepoint. The 10-episode series is currently airing on the Fox channel.

But was that last shot revealing something? Is Eve Myles the murderer's wife?

Keep up Morsh

This was great, so pleased that alot of the previous cast have been reprised and not just a whole bunch of newbies to get used to.

I need to watch the first series of this...just watched that one and didnt know wtf was going on but it seemed good

In fairness now that you know whodunnit, it probably is not worth the watch, basically the kid died at the hands of Joe Miller, Ellie was investigating the case with David Tennant (can't recall his screen name, alzheimers), and Miller was Ellies husband, cue she lost her career and her oldest son who was bessie mates with the victim, not sure where he is now

Didn't Joe give his full confession BEFORE Ellie was allowed to see him?

Therefore how can they say she beat a confession out of him?

Jay.
12-01-2015, 10:15 PM
Yeah but she said that and it wouldn't change anything

I think it's because, how could they trust them as detectives if they'd do that?

Marsh.
12-01-2015, 10:16 PM
But in Ellie's case, this is obviously a very personal thing for her. Still wrong, but they could see how it would affect her, him being her husband.

It's a bit of a stretch to try and argue that Ellie was involved in stitching her own children's father up for the murder of a family friend he didn't commit.

Ross.
12-01-2015, 10:17 PM

I think they're accusing Alec of beating it out of him to get a confession at the shed/house w/e before Ellie did, she said something like 'how are we meant to know if he didn't get those injuries before arriving at the station'.

This is so confusing but I love it. :flutter:

Oh right. I thought the barrister woman said they had tape from the interview room showing Ellie kicking him.

They do I think, they wanted to discredit the recording that Alec had by accusing him of beating him up as well although I'm not sure how that works when he must have looked fine in the tape before Ellie kicked him.

Bit annoying though that nearly every actor or maybe every single actor has appeared at some point in Dr who and/or Torchwood. So I am taking it that the writers of Broadchurch are the same writers of Dr Who? Captain Jack will probably turn up next.

Award winning drama Broadchurch resumes filming in Dorset this summer with an impressive ensemble cast confirmed to appear in the third and final series.

David Tennant and Olivia Colman reprise their roles as DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller with Jodie Whittaker and Andrew Buchan returning to play Beth and Mark Latimer.

They will be joined by National Television Award winner Julie Hesmondhalgh, BAFTA winner Georgina Campbell along with Sarah Parish, Charlie Higson and Mark Bazeley who take significant roles in the eight part series to be co-produced for ITV by Kudos, Imaginary Friends and Sister Pictures.

Arthur Darvill also returns as local Vicar Paul Coates, Carolyn Pickles as newspaper editor Maggie Radcliffe and Adam Wilson as Ellie’s son Tom.

The new series will herald a brand new case for Miller and Hardy with the detectives reuniting to investigate a serious sexual assault.

“This is the final chapter of Broadchurch,” said Chris Chibnall. “We have one last story to tell, featuring both familiar faces and new characters. I hope it’s a compelling and emotional farewell to a world and show that means so much to me.”

The series explores the consequences of a serious sexual assault as a Dorset community comes under the scrutiny of Hardy and Miller’s investigation. Based on a year of research with Dorset-based organisations who specialise in dealing with victims of sexual assault, and police advisors who specialise in investigating crimes of sexual violence, Broadchurch’s final chapter looks at the emotional cost to all of those involved and the irreparable damage to friendships and relationships.

ITV’s former Director of Drama Steve November and Controller of Drama Victoria Fea have commissioned the new series.

“Broadchurch is as ever stylishly written, provocative and thought provoking,” said Victoria. “We’re pleased with the direction Chris and Jane have taken this series and the extraordinary cast they’ve assembled.”

Broadchurch will be executive produced by Chris Chibnall (Malaterra, The Great Train Robbery, Torchwood) for Imaginary Friends and Jane Featherstone (River, Humans, Gracepoint) for Sister Pictures. Dan Winch (Indian Summers II, What We did On Our Holiday) will produce the final series. Broadchurch is a co-production with Kudos, an Endemol Shine Group company.

“Broadchurch has been an important part of my life and I am so delighted and privileged to be working with Chris and the team again as we embark on the very final series,” said Jane Featherstone. “We will return to the town and characters we know so well as they find themselves caught up in a new and compelling story which will test the strength of the community and the people who live there, and will, I hope, be a fitting end to this trilogy.”

On behalf of co-producers Kudos Chief Executive Officer Diederick Santer said:

“Kudos are delighted to be working in partnership with Chris and Jane once again, on what promises to be the thrilling final chapter of Broadchurch.”

The series will be directed by Paul Andrew Williams (The Eichmann Show, Murdered by My Boyfriend), Daniel Nettheim (Doctor Who, Humans, Line of Duty) and Lewis Arnold (Banana, Prey, Humans).

Filming will commence this summer in Bridport, West Bay and Clevedon, which have featured as locations in Broadchurch series one and two.

More Broadchurch news will follow to ensure the media are kept informed of specific character and plot developments.

Note to Editors: The Shores (Dorset’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre) and Dorset Rape Crisis have supported and advised Chris Chibnall throughout writing the scripts for this series of Broadchurch.

so yeah there's this

Recently finished watching this :D

I loved the first and third series, but the second just draaaaagged. Like, who care about Ten's past case and those annoying defence lawyers? S3 was better, with Thirteen doing the charity work and them trying to solve Hayley's rape etc
