I can't say I particularly like either of them, but seeing as nobody can be perfect it seems likely that nobody could take the moral high ground without the accusation of hypocrisy being thrown around.

I don't think he was taking any moral high ground, just legitimately calling her out as daft and spiteful, and then showing he can do the insulting banter stuff just as well as she can, which is all silly but gets people all entertained and helps sells further rags.
