Saw Drew posted about this on the Premier League thread but this is probably something that could end up blowing up and dragging on for a while like the Ched Evan's case so thought it could do with its own thread

England and Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Durham Police said a 27-year-old had been arrested earlier on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16, and remained in police custody.

Sunderland AFC said he had been suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation.

News of the arrest of a Premier League footballer was revealed earlier in The Sun newspaper.

If he ends up being charged/found guilty of anything or not he'll get abuse for this for the rest of his career probably, if he even does ever have a career again

If his innocent at all then I believe that the bit in bold could be true.

After all you can only hope that his not deliberately being a paedophile.

Adam Johnson, the England footballer suspected of having sex with a 15-year-old girl, was arrested after the teenager boasted she was in a relationship with him and her father found out, the Telegraph can reveal.

The Sunderland winger was detained on Monday morning at his £1.85 million home after Durham Police received a complaint from the schoolgirl’s father.

It is understood the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had boasted of her alleged liaison with the 27-year-old footballer to friends and on social media.

When her father was made aware of the rumours he went to the police and Johnson was arrested and questioned for several hours.

The player, who has had 12 caps for England, has since been suspended by Sunderland AFC, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Johnson’s partner, Stacey Flounders, is reported to have given birth to their daughter just seven weeks ago.

Her mother has defended the former Middlesbrough and Manchester City star insisiting they are standing by him as he is "100 per cent innocent".

She told the Daily Mirror: “"They are still very close and are absolutely still together. He is 100 per cent innocent and we will stand by him. He hasn't been found guilty of anything.

“He is a great lad and has not done anything wrong. This is a horrible situation.”

A statement from Sunderland said: “Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation. No further comment will be made at the present time."

Johnson had been due to travel with the rest of the squad to Humberside on Monday afternoon for Tuesday night's Barclays Premier League fixture at Hull, a vital match in the battle to avoid relegation to the Championship.

They surely must have some grounds to believe the girl though? They would never just suspend him and arrest him with no kind of proof that something was going on, would they? I hope not anyway

I don't know about the arresting but I'm guessing that as soon as a player is arrested on charges as big as those that the club really have no choice left but to suspend him

I just can't imagine it being right to just take the word of the girl without her being able to give some sort of proof, like places they'd meet up, photos or witnesses to it or something along those lines

Sunderland player Adam Johnson faces child sex charges

England and Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson has been charged with three counts of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.

The 27-year-old, from Castle Eden, County Durham, was initially arrested on 2 March.

He was also charged with one offence of grooming when he answered bail at a police station earlier, Durham Police said.

He will appear before Peterlee Magistrates' Court on 20 May.

Sunderland AFC initially suspended the winger pending the outcome of the investigation, but this was lifted on 18 March.

The club are yet to comment on the charges.

Gerry Wareham, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said he had authorised police to charge Johnson under the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

He said the offences are alleged to have been committed on a single victim between 30 December 2014 to 26 February this year.

"May I remind all concerned that the defendant has a right to a fair trial," he said.

"It is very important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.

"I would also remind people that the complainant in this case is entitled to lifelong anonymity under the law. For these reasons, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further."

Born in Sunderland, Johnson began his career at Middlesbrough FC before moving to Manchester City and then Sunderland for £10m in 2012.
