Christmas TV Ratings - 2006 and Vicar of Dibley wins ratings battle

It wasn't that long ago that both Coronation Street and EastEnders would have pulled an audience of 16-18 million on a weekday night, let alone a Christmas special. Do you think we are watching less TV then we did a few years ago and why?

More people have multi-channel telly now and they're using the Internet more.

Also the TV companies are relying on the soaps too much with Corrie and Emmerdale on 5 and 6 times a week now.

Yes I have multi bore television and there is nothing on. It seem the more channels you have the less you watch. I thought I would find something interesting to watch once I got sky. Now I find I watch TV even less than I did before when I just had freeview.

I'm sure the programmes they make today are in general of lower quality than those of the past and that goes for the soaps too.

I would have to agree 100% there, and the more they are on the less I watch TV. I use to watch Eastenders and Brookside years ago, but now I couldn't careless for soaps at all. I must have stopped watching them about 7 to 8 years ago.

I once had period of 9 months without TV and I didn't miss it one bit. I only got a TV again to watch Big Brother.

Didn't see it, but it has been a great programme and I'm sure you will be able to watch it for many a year to come on UK TV Gold. It's shows like that made the BBC the channel of choice for many years but I don't see them making programmes to take it's place.

The Vicar Of Dibley won the Christmas Day battle for television viewers with more than 11 million tuning in to watch the sitcom.

The long-running BBC series, starring Dawn French, is ending with a special two-part edition and the first instalment was the nation's favourite show on Christmas night, attracting an average audience of 11.4 million.

In second place was the last episode of an EastEnders double bill, watched by 10.7 million, followed by its rival soap, Coronation Street, with 9.6 million tuning in for the hour-long show.

The first instalment of EastEnders came next, watched by 9.2 million, then the popular sci-fi show Dr Who (8.7 million) and Little Britain Abroad (8.4 million).

Outside the top 10 was a one-off special edition of the ITV1 comedy drama Doc Martin, which was watched by 5.3 million.

The Queen's Speech attracted 5.7 million viewers on BBC1 and 900,000 on BBC2, while on ITV1 1.9 million tuned in.

The combined total of 8.5 million viewers was down on last year's 9.2 million.

The viewing figures, which are official estimates, showed the BBC had eight programmes in the top 10 - its best result since 2002.

The Corporation was also the most popular broadcaster out of all the terrestrial channels on Christmas Day, but it saw its overall share fall for the fifth year running.

The BBC said its main channel had a 29.8% share of the audience throughout the day compared to ITV1's 21.1%, while ITV1 stated it had 22.5% and the BBC1 30.5%. The peak audience watching television was 24.8 million at 9.45pm - last year's figure was 23.8 million at 9.15pm.

Lmao Mark that bit was good, but my favourtie was when the guy told the Vicor the girl was her sister and she was screaming 'What!!!', and then started running about the village screaming and going into the church ringing the bells lol.

I watched the Christmas Doctor Who today.

Could hardly hear the dialogue sometimes because of the loud background music. It was ridiculous. :hugesmile:

I watched none of them on xmas day :whistle: Haha.

I think with the choice of more channels then the Eastenders/Corrie viewers are being 'diluted' by pure choice.

The last ever episode of BBC One sitcom Vicar of Dibley managed an average of 12.3 million viewers and a 43.8% audience share on New Years Day.

The second part of the Christmas special saw the marriage of female vicar Geraldine Granger, played by Dawn French, to Harry, played by Robin Hood actor Richard Armitage, and hit a peak audience of 12.6 million at 10pm.

The first part, shown on Christmas Day, managed an audience of 12.2 million and a 47.1% share.

A double bill of EastEnders, which saw the funeral of Pauline Fowler, managed 10.7 million and a 41% share, with the second episode at 9pm attracting 9.8 million and a 36.8% share.

The other soaps performed well, with Emmerdale netting 8.2 million viewers and a Coronation Street double bill attracting 10.5 million.

ITV1's drama Dead Clever pulled in an average 4 million viewers and a 15.3% share at 9pm. The two-hour drama, which starred Suranne Jones and Helen Baxendale, began with 4.5 million, but lost viewers over the two hours to hold on to just 3.6 million at 10.15pm.

BBC One's adaptation of The Wind in the Willows managed 4.5 million viewers at 6.20pm. The show, which starred Matt Lucas star as Toad and Bob Hoskins as Badger, grew its audience over its 100-minute slot, ending with 5.7 million and a 21.3% share at 9.45pm.
