BBC clears Clarkson over new racism row: Corporation rules 'pikey' is NOT offensive after travellers' group complains about joke
Word became part of 'running gag' between Clarkson and James May
It was about their colleague Richard Hammond's perceived cheap style
Complaint lodged by Traveller Movement after word appeared in epsiode
But BBC Trust says there was 'no intended racist reference' on Top Gear

The ruling stated: ‘The committee believed the word “pikey” had evolved into common parlance among a number of people to mean “chavvy” or “cheap” and … viewers would not necessarily associate it with the Gipsy and Traveller communities.’

Due to the stereotypical use of the word...

Chavvy
Refers to a mate of the 'pikey' or 'Traveller' family ,i.e 'Oight chavvy!, pass da reefer bouy!'
So, equally as offensive then, and associated with travellers?

Then what's the point banning any derogatory word that is used to cause offence to any minority group, sexual preference or faith?
If when they are used it's 'PC gone mad' to object to it...
If the offensive term was directed towards a group I was connected with then I would feel very strongly about it, when you're not directly affected it's easy to be blasé I suppose.

How is "pikey" a racist word it does not refer to any particular race, but accurately describes a nasty, dirty, smelly, uncouth, unlawful, unwashed, unedu cated, thieving class of people.
The sort of people who have no moral compass, no scruples, take no responsibility for their lives or their childrens lives, who live of the state and take whatever else they want.
How is that racist................??

Absolutely (see my post above) , would not want to be called one of those.
But it is still not racist and therefore not coved in our race hate legislation.

Irish travellers tend to devastate an area and leave a trail of filth and rubbish behind them, are above the law, don't pay tax, give a really bad name to real gypsies who are clean and law abiding... and yet they expect preferential treatment. And on top of all that, you have to be really polite when you refer to them or they may get offended.

the trouble is that when you refer to 'travellers' or 'gypsies' as a collective term and call them pikeys you are also covering the decent travellers who are clean and go by the law in that stereotype which is unfair.

No I'm not. I have the greatest respect for proper Gypsies. The ones who steal, dump rubbish, don't pay tax or insure their vehicles... they're the pikeys.

Some interesting comparisons drawn here.
'On 27 January 2015 we commemorated the 70th anniversary of the day when Soviet troops liberated the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Quite rightly we reflected upon the terrible fact that the Nazis murdered 6 million Jews in the Holocaust. Yet there was little mention of the hundreds of thousands of Romani Gypsy and Sinti[1] people that were also murdered by the Nazis during World War II in what has become known as the Porrajmos (the ‘Devouring’).
How were the Nazis able to commit these terrible crimes with impunity?
The Nazi propaganda machine played a very significant role by reinforcing age old prejudices. Romani Gypsies and Sinti were made scapegoats, blamed for the ills of society and characterised or stereotyped as anti-social thieves and vagabonds and dehumanised. The propaganda campaign worked; the settled population had been conditioned to believe what they were being told (by what would now clearly be understood as ‘hate speech’[2]) and there was little opposition when Romani Gypsies and Sinti were rounded up before being transported to camps from which they would never return.'

Well tbh I dont really agree with banning words at all. I think it gives the person using them too much relevance. Ignoring stuff like this and writing the user off as an idiot is much more my thing, not getting in a flap about it

Words like 'p*ki' and 'po*f' are unacceptable as they were made unacceptable by society, not because they were ignored though.
Now it's ignorant, crass and uneducated to refer to people by those terms... I don't see this one any different.

No, travellers or Gypsies are more likely to have descended from the Romani or Romany/Roma groups who are an ethnicity of Indian origin living mostly in Europe and the Americas.
They are dispersed all over Europe and arrived in mid-west Asia around 1,000 years ago.
The Irish gypsies I think are also included in this group.
The "Pikey" word I'm not sure about don't know where that came from.

A gypsy is a person who lives off the grid in a nomadic way. Gypsy settlers are no longer seen as gypsies by those who still live the nomadic lifestyle but they are still seen as Romany blood lines.
Pikeys tend to be of Irish descent and are also known as Irish tinkers. The word originated from turnpike travellers who were homeless people that travelled from one place to another to do hop picking.

I think on your "national" channel, words like "pikey" which is a derogatory word used to describe a certain group of people, should probably not be used, it is offensive to that group

I think people get frustrated with it Niamh. Those people sometimes referred to as 'Pikeys' cause a lot of damage here, they destroy complete areas with their stealing and their dumping of rubbish, the police's hands are totally tied when dealing with them, so much more so than the Garda, according to some coppers I liaised with when I was working with an MP. They move onto a piece of private ground, a supermarket car park, a village green nothing's out of bounds to them, and they turn it into a rubbish dump. They pay no tax, they adhere to no laws, they close ranks if there is any kind of investigation into their wrong doings... but even so, it is demanded we show them respect when they give none. I'm not usually one for calling people names but the work 'Pikey' isn't used for all travellers as far as I can see. It's used for the scum of the travelling community who give the rest of them a bad name.

Well, I think those coppers you liased with are wrong, the same does happen here I can assure you  so I do know what you're talking about.
My point though is that even though you say that Pikey isn't used for all travellers, I think alot of people do use it for Travellers in general and it is a derogatory word used for a particular group and probably should not be used on the BBC.
