Channel 5 renews Big Brother for three more years

Broadcaster to air two series of Celebrity Big Brother and one series of traditional format until end of 2018

Channel 5 has struck a deal to broadcast Big Brother for the next three years.

Under the deal, which in the past has paid as much as £20m a year to air the hit reality TV show, has secured the rights to broadcast Big Brother until the end of 2018.

The deal will see Channel 5 continue to air two series of Celebrity Big Brother and one series of the traditional format each year, as well as various associated spin-off themed shows.

“Big Brother in all its guises brings a huge and varied cross section of viewers to Channel 5 and typifies the appointment-to-view programming we want on the channel,” said Channel 5 chief operating officer Paul Dunthorne.

Big Brother is one of the most important shows in the Channel 5 schedule, with an average of about 3 million viewers tuning in to watch Katie Price beat Katie Hopkins in the most recent series of Celebrity Big Brother.

Viacom, which bought Channel 5 from Richard Desmond for £463m last year, has extended the reach of Big Brother to its MTV UK channel to run repeats.

Channel 5 struck the deal with Initial, a production subsidiary of Endemol Shine UK.

“Channel 5 is a fantastic home for Big Brother,” said Initial managing director Nick Samwell-Smith. “Over the past four years we’ve worked closely together to keep this extraordinary format feeling fresh, noisy, and creatively vibrant. I’m thrilled that this landmark deal means we can look forward to three more years of big characters and juicy storylines from inside our favourite house.”

Channel 5’s last deal to air Big Brother was struck for two years in 2012.

Shame about two CBB's a year still but this will take us to BB19, let's hope for one more renewal after that and then we will have had 20 years of BBUK :o

CBB was the jewel in the crown and reason why the franchise was bought. Genuinely surprised that contract was renewed, ratings have pancaked. My guess is that the "old" style BBUK has died and is being kept going by recruits, a plethora of vacuous models et al.

I won't get too happy because I know contracts don't always guarantee things like this (hai Brian Dowling), but I'm pleased. If they're heading in the direction that we've been promised (a more diverse cast, longer series, better spacing between series) then this is a good move. If they're not... eh. It's still Big Brother.

Really happy.
Annoyed about Summer CBB, though.

I really hope they make the 2nd half of Channel 5 BB, better. Especially the civilian run.

Channel 5 Era 1 - 2011 - 2014. Produced about four fantastic series, out of eleven possible series.
Channel 5 Era 2 - 2015 - 2018 Hope it's better than 11-14.

There's a bit in the Broadcast article about C5 which says the channel will have a 'marginally' higher budget:

.....Viacom, which also operates MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, will rebrand C5 by the end of 2015 after sealing its £463m takeover in October last year.

It will refresh the on-air look of the channel and has appointed agency Joint London to oversee the campaign. It is not clear if the channel’s name will change....

.....“We will refresh the C5 look later [this year] and also reshape the content output, bringing in a broader range of programming that isn’t traditionally thought of as C5,” said David Lynn, president of Viacom International Media Networks UK, Australia and Central and Eastern Europe.

Viacom also plans to “boost” C5’s programming output, with Frow being given “marginally” more than last year’s £200m budget to move into scripted comedy and drama and deliver campaigning documentaries.

Some of that budget will be spent on more Big Brother. Broadcast can reveal that C5 has formally extended its deal with Endemol Shine UK for another three years, until at least the end of 2018.....

Because at the moment, the number of BB and CBB seasons match up.

disagree - reason - cbb are so short and intense its good we have 2 of them as they come round quicker then once a year.

i love the fact 2 and 1 civilian. well done BB and CBB - now lets prey they have decent people on with a bit of intellect between them.

Not surprised by this. Big Brother will just keep going. It's just the quality of housemates which have gone down.

The last civilian series was pretty poor.

I think they should axe summer CBB because it does not feel right having more series of CBB than the civilian one.

Summer 2015 - Big Brother 16|CBB 16
2016 - CBB17|BB17|CBB18
2017 - CBB19|BB18|CBB20
2018 - 2021|BB19|CBB22(this should be a all star series if it ends)

Viacom payed £120 million pounds to show Big Brother for the next three years, according to this article - http://www.mediaweek.co.uk/article/1339315/why-viacom-spent-120m-extending-channel-5s-big-brother-deal-three-years

There's some more info about what Big Brother means to Channel 5 in that article.

.....This week’s announcement ends nine months of protracted negotiations as the new management team at Channel 5 wanted to fully assess the role the franchise plays for the broadcaster.

There were fears in some quarters that the broadcaster was overly reliant on the show, and that the sensational antics of some of its stars was defining the broadcaster in the perceptions of the UK public.

However, many insiders at Channel 5 were in no doubt about the value Big Brother brings to the broadcaster. In 2014, Channel 5 was the largest commercial free-to-air network to grow its audience share, including among 16- to 34-year-olds and ABC1 viewers. The back-to-back hours of Big Brother and its spin-off shows Big Brother’s Little Brother played a significant part.

The last series of Celebrity Big Brother broadcast in January proved to be its most popular yet, attracting an average audience of 3.1 million per episode and an 11.4 per cent share of viewing.

Following the acquisition of Channel 5 by Viacom International Media Networks in the autumn of 2014, repeats of Celebrity Big Brother also appeared on MTV UK and outperformed the channel’s all day average audience among 16-34s by almost 20 per cent. The show's eclectic mix of some well-known names, including Patsy Kensit, Keith Chegwin, Perez Hilton and Katie Hopkins, was eventually won by model Katie Price.

It achieved the broadcaster's best audience highs in almost three years and Channel 5's share of 16-34s reached 10.9 per cent. Outside of the linear broadcast, the launch of Celebrity Big Brother was also the most tweeted about show on TV, generating 419,000 tweets on its launch day alone.

The new deal was negotiated by Paul Dunthorne, chief operating officer at Channel 5, who said: "Big Brother in all its guises brings a huge and varied cross section of viewers to Channel 5 and typifies the appointment-to-view programming we want on the channel. It remains one of TV’s most talked about and popular programmes and I’m genuinely delighted we’ve secured it for at least three more years.".....

.....The show’s arrival on Channel 5 in 2011 is now regarded as the best deal made by its then entrepreneurial owner Richard Desmond. Big Brother’s strong audiences and multimillion-pound product placements and other commercial partnerships with brands including Domino’s, Gumtree, Microsoft, Very.co.uk, SuperCasino.com and L’Oréal has helped lift the broadcaster’s revenues by 35 per cent over the past four years, to around £350 million.

Agostino Di Falco, deputy commercial sales director at Channel 5, told Campaign: "Celebrity Big Brother is a commercial powerhouse, unrivalled in British TV in its scope for imaginative commercial partnerships. The sheer breadth and variety of brands that have partnered with Big Brother over the years demonstrates the inventive opportunities for integrating brands within the show."

The reality television franchise also provided some welcome bragging rights last summer at the often maligned broadcaster. Channel 5 beat Channel 4 for share of viewers, for the first time in its 17-year history last summer......
