after video of shooting emerges.
You can watch the video of the incident if you click the link at the bottom
(CNN)A South Carolina officer has been charged with murder after a video surfaced that appears to show him shooting an unarmed man who was running away.
Michael Slager, an officer with the North Charleston Police Department, was arrested Tuesday, according to a statement from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, or SLED. If found guilty of murder, he could face up to life in prison or death.
The shooting took place Saturday morning after a traffic stop, SLED said. Video obtained by The New York Times shows what happened.
A black man, identified as 50-year-old Walter Scott, breaks away from the white officer. Something falls, and the officer fires eight shots at the man as he runs away. Scott, who appears to be unarmed, drops to the ground.
"I can tell you that as the result of that video and the bad decision made by our officer, he will be charged with murder," North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey told reporters Tuesday. "When you're wrong, you're wrong. And if you make a bad decision -- don't care if you're behind the shield or just a citizen on the street -- you have to live by that decision."

If you imagine the city of leeds. that is the number of police in the USA.
Now imagine giving everyone in leeds a gun..
Its amazing and a credit to the USA police that these isolated incidents are just that.

They will probably say the victim was trying to steal the policemans bullets...lol
Actually I think in this particular case given the high profile of cases like these, this officer will be the scapegoat and pay the price ie charged with Murder.
Whether he actually is convicted or serves any reasonable amount of jail time is another matter.

If you watch the video as well he goes and drops his taser next to the guy he has just shot obviously trying to make it out he was in danger...he said he feared for his life but how could that be when the guy is running away when he is shot?

I don't mean he is a scapegoat for the crime.... it's clear he is as guilty as hell and caught bang to rights on video.
No....I think he will pay the collective price of so many recent failures to prosecute other similar cases where the offending Policemen have escaped serious prosecution even though the same video evidence exists to show their guilt.
I think the establishment will want to set an example to all police forces by prosecuting this man for 1st or 2nd degree murder and then pushing for a lengthy prison service. I think he is being made a scapegoat in this context.

Yes
but not all of them.
I agree I think the majority of them do a wonderful job and for the most part it's a thankless one.
But yea there is no doubt that that this crazy man (who happens to work as a policeman) killed the other guy trying to run. I watched a bit of the video on the news and they stopped it before you could see anything graphic but they still played the audio of the gunshots.
Still though I'm not 100% sure he will get charged with murder.

..yeah I understand what you mean, Nedusa...I guess that I just don't agree that this incident could be described that way..that he could be made an example of for other high profile cases recently because he did shoot Walter Scott in the back eight times so for me it couldn't be anything other than a very long sentence if justice were to be served..and a deserved one, regardless of any other crimes...

It matters because so far this year in Ferguson 400+ people have been shot down and ALL of them were black. And all the cops shooting them were white!

idiot, but most policemen in the us are, I think capital punishment for police officers who use guns on un armed people, it will make them think twice about using the bullets, he knew that guy was not armed either.

Disgrace, well done to the person taking the video

From the video, I think the cop actually did think that the guy had taken the tazer (which he had actually dropped), but I don't think he thought he was at risk, I think he thought "Hah! Now he's armed so I can gun the ****er down :)"... then he shoots the guy to bits, walks over to him, and "OH SHHIII... he doesn't have the tazer!! Better plant it on him."
Other observations:
- It takes him an awful lot of shots to actually hit his target. That's worrying in itself.
- the video comments on them not performing CPR... the guy is quite clearly very dead already! That's why!
- Whoever made the video has more balls than I do, I would have been fully expecting the gun to be turned on me. Then again, if we go back to point one, the person filming seems to be some distance away so not really a worry... it would take a week for this guy to get a lucky shot.

Yes - LT is the undisputed Master when it comes to sheer obstinacy and tenacity. He WILL NEVER QUIT if he believes in something. I just wish he was a Christian (LOL ) My job defending my faith would be a lot easier with him on board instead of in opposition. Thank God we agree on most other things.
On this though Girth, even LT has no argument.
I have said in many posts that deviants gravitate towards careers which allow them to covertly practice whichever perverse trait they have; Lesbians become Prison Officers in Women's Prisons, Paedophiles secure employment in Children's Homes, and corrupt bastards become politicians. Even certain people with psychopathic tendencies become 'Jihadists' because it enables them to indulge sick violent urges with the least chance of recrimination.
It is no different with 'Cops'.
A lot of disturbed people who are carrying secret blind rage and hatred inside them because they are racist or were bullied at school etc. become Police Officers, because that role empowers them, and in a lot of situations they are afforded opportunities to vent their rage or prejudice at others - again with little fear of recrimination.
While it's important to remember that these bastards are in a tiny minority in the context of numbers, where innocent citizens are concerned - one murderous cop is one too many.
My opinion is that any Cop, Judge, or Politician - anyone who has jurisdiction over other people - should at ALL times be paragons of virtue; scrupulously impartial and meticulously honourable, and so whenever anyone in such positions of power is found to be corrupt, then their crimes are compounded 1,000 times and their punishment should be draconian and merciless.
We have to be able to completely TRUST those who are in power over us and institutional or state cover ups when those in power betray that trust, do nothing but increase the outrage we all have at such times, as well as magnify the hopelessness we are left with that corruption is endemic and democracy and justice are bollox.
Lord Acton said: "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" and it is beyond argument that when a cop MURDERS an unarmed citizen then he should receive the death penalty - not only as a fitting punishment and a clear deterrent to others, but also as a LOUD, EMPHATIC STATEMENT of ASSURANCE to an increasingly cynical public that MURDERERS IN UNIFORM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
a gif has been created that stabalises the footage to clearly show the police officer planting a taser next to the body. horrifying.

No.....I don't think the deterrent will be to stop corrupt Police Officers shooting innocent people, more like the deterrent effect will be to stop people from taking up a career in the Police services if they think if they shoot someone there is an outside chance they could fry for it.
I think the Death Penalty for serving Police Officers is a step too far, a good lengthy prison sentence where they have to live alongside all those scummy criminals they were responsible for banging up could prove a more effective deterrent.
