View Full Version : Jamelia, high street stores should NOT sell plus size clothing

Kizzy
22-04-2015, 12:56 AM
'Loose Women panellist Jamelia has sparked controversy after insisting that shops should not stock clothes for obese women.
In a discussion about overweight teenagers, the 34-year-old mother-of-two said that obese women 'should feel uncomfortable' about their unhealthy size, and that high street stores should not be catering for them.
She said: 'I do not think it's right to facilitate people living an unhealthy lifestyle, in the same way I don't believe that a size zero should be available - it's not a healthy size for an average woman to be.'

Well, so much for advertising and media making young people obsess about their weight, now we have light entertainment presenters demonising the obese.

What a stupid irresponsible brainless thing to say, what are bigger women supposed to wear then?

I'm sure there are many stores in the high st and online with fashionable clothing ranges for the larger woman ( and man).

..I agree it was a stupid thing to say and an awfull message to give out..she also said the same of smaller people/size zeros etc so it wasn't aimed at just larger people...I'm sure that somewhere in that, she had some kind of what she thought was a well meaning intention of saying that no extreme is healthy, which of course it isn't but that was completely lost in her feeling that anyone should be 'demonised' or made to feel as though they have to have specific selective shops because their body size is not what she considers is healthy...

Storm in a teacup.
The panel were discussing how shops and companies are springing up making clothes for the larger woman/girl trendy. Does it normalise obesity etc..so she did have a valid opinion, however, that is all it is, her opinion.
There was a documentary on last night showing what big business it is now (pardon the pun). Very interesting, personally I think it is a great idea, the confidence these size 24 and above girls had showing their bodies was amazing.

Of course obesity is a big problem and especially obesity in children and teenagers but I don't see how giving these people nothing to wear is going to help? Most likely it will make them feel worse about themselves and make the problem worse. How about thinking about an actual solution like making health and exercise more of a priority in schools?

they both cant be right

Because unhealthy / fattening food is cheap and easy. What do the food banks even offer? Tinned crap, white carbs, carbs and more carbs. If you live off that crap you will get fat, simple as that. Body converts all those empty carbs to fat and also the poor quality leaves people feeling lethargic, therefore less active, therefore getting less exercise.

As for her comments, a bit daft in that people of all sizes have to buy clothes SOMEWHERE, but I do completely get her point in theory. Being overweight / obese in the western world is becoming "normalised" to the point that people who are, to be blunt, quite fat are seen as a normal / healthy weight. If it was only about aesthetics that wouldn't be a problem: people are free to have whatever body type they want if they are happy with it.

But when people have a distorted view of "normal weight", they are likely to think that their weight is "perfectly healthy" when they are, in fact, overweight... and then they're surprised / horrified when they start developing wider health issues related to their weight. Or rather, how much fat they're carrying... "weight" is meaningless in terms of health, only body fat percentage really matters.

But yeah... putting it simply, being an *unhealthy* weight shouldn't be normalised, congratulated or applauded. People shouldn't be shamed either, of course, and at the end of the day it's their own business if they want to have painful health complications and die younger... but, being healthy should always at least be strongly encouraged. It's NOT really "fine to be fat".

[edit] Edited to add: I say this as someone who has gained 2st (and lost muscle mass, so realistically gained more than 2st of fat) in the last 8 months so I'm not preaching from any soapbox. I'm currently not being healthy at all (went from cycling 15 miles a day for work to catching the bus like a lazy arsehole) and need to sort it out.

No you will only get fat if you eat more than you burn off. Plenty people are thin and eat rubbish. What causes the obesity is take away food plain and simple

I absolutely agree with all that TS. It is a huge issue, I was watching the Irish Voice actually and I noticed that so many of the contestants (noticeably more so the girls for some reason) were over weight, it really is a worrying thing. I myself, gained a stone and a half in the last few years (which thankfully I'm halfway there to getting rid of now) but I was thinking to my myself, I'm sure I don't eat that much how have I actually put on all this weight? It wasn't until i actually started keeping note of how many calories are in everything I was eating did I realise that you don't actually even need to eat a horrendous amount to pile up your calories, if you're eating the wrong things. The one I was most shocked by actually was just how bad McDonalds was, 1100 calories in a medium meal  That's almost your whole days allowance for a woman and you're hungry again like an hour later

No you will only get fat if you eat more than you burn off. Plenty people are thin and eat rubbish. What causes the obesity is take away food plain and simple

Yes but if you eat nothing but crap like tinned macaroni and white bread you will become tired / lethargic, like I said, and therefore less likely to keep active and burn calories. Bad food is a double-edged sword, and whilst I agree that take-away food is very rarely any good, it's far from being the only bad choice. Supermarket ready-meals / tinned meals / convenience foods like supernoodles that some people try to live on, are far worse. Especially the ones packed with hydrogenated fats, MSG, or both.

The worst offender is coke / other carbonated drinks though. The full-fat ones are A) full of calories and B) cause a "sugar crash" within a couple of hours of drinking one. You're not going to be doing any exercise whilst crashing, and the most likely scenario is that you're going to seek out another sugary drink.

"Diet" (irony!) drinks are even worse because the combination of the artificial sweeteners plus the gas stretching the stomach promotes hunger.

Anyway... my main point is, these food banks are not providing the raw, fresh foods that promote an energetic or healthy lifestyle. It's processed crap and heavy carbs.

The 'why's' and 'wherefores' of how people GOT to be fat, and the 'If's' and 'but's of 'HEALTH ISSUES' associated with being fat have nothing to do with this tedious 'KH' wannabe's statements.

FAT people already EXIST so the question is; Do we really want to see MOUNTAINS of wobbling cellulite and dimpled flesh bouncing up and down when FAT people are forced to walk around NAKED because of this big mouthed TV 'Celebrity?

I say no! Save our pavements from the damage caused by nipple drag from massive bosoms. Save our children from having to witness such horrors.

Because she's too dim to know how ridiculous that sounds.

- it's not a healthy size for an average woman to be.'

Maybe so...but people still are that size, what are they supposed top wear, potato sacks :umm2:

I mean, the average clothes size of a woman now is like size 16..which technically unless you are really tall, would be classed as obese in most cases.

Anyway, she need not worry, in most high street shops you have problems to begin with buying anything above (or below) about a size 8

Vicky.
22-04-2015, 12:49 PM
..I agree it was a stupid thing to say and an awfull message to give out..she also said the same of smaller people/size zeros etc so it wasn't aimed at just larger people...I'm sure that somewhere in that, she had some kind of what she thought was a well meaning intention of saying that no extreme is healthy, which of course it isn't but that was completely lost in her feeling that anyone should be 'demonised' or made to feel as though they have to have specific selective shops because their body size is not what she considers is healthy...

Yeah, so she has a problem with those skinnier than her, and also those larger than her. Why not make it so every shop only caters for her personal size. Maybe then the ignorant offensive bitch would be happy

Veg good, spinach very good, potatoes naughty :nono:

Empty starchy carbohydrates. I agree with not wanting to live on salads or veg but you can keep ALL of the tasty parts of a diet and just cut the "bulk" by removing white bread, pasta and potatoes. All are basically nutritionally worthless.

Potatoes fill you up better than anything else though, or they do with me. I could eat no end of salad, veg, and most meat and still feel peckish. Whereas a baked potato with beans or something fills me for hours and hours :S

I don't think I said this :/ Is it in a link I posted? She's opened a right can of worms here, the fashion industry just get around to catering for women of all sizes, after years of campaigns aimed at boosting womens self esteem, as too for very slim ladies and she says don't bother... :fist:

Its in the story

You're Irish, that's different, it's a specialised diet for Irish people. Like, cows can survive eating just grass but most species couldn't. Likewise, all that is needed to sustain the Irish is the humble potato. The leading theory is that Irish people have evolved a special enzyme that actually converts potato starch into a superfood. It's fascinating stuff really. I actually saw a documentary recently in which they demonstrated Potatogenesis - a process by which elderly Irish people are buried up to their necks in a field for a few months and then when you return, they have sprouted more Irish people.

I agree Vanessa, I eat healthily and work out every day BUT I don't deprive myself of goodies if I want them.. I agree with this quote below:

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, red wine in the other, body thoroughly used, totally worn out and screaming -- "WOO HOO, what a ride!"
