Initial has appointed Denis O’Connor to the newly-created role of creative director for flagship format Big Brother.

The executive producer has been promoted to creative director of Big Brother programming and will oversee Channel 5’s long-running reality show, as well as its spin-offs, Celebrity Big Brother and Big Brother’s Bit on the Side.

Along with Katy Manley and Susy Price, O’Connor has been exec producer on the show for three years and also oversaw the show’s final series on Channel 4 in 2010.

His other credits include BBC3’s Celebrity Scissorhands, C4’s Home for the Holidays and BBC2’s The Underdog Show.

Reporting to Initial managing director, Nick Samwell-Smith, O’Connor will take up the new position immediately.

Last month Broadcast revealed that C5 had extended its deal with Endemol Shine UK for Big Brother until at least the end of 2018.

O’Connor said he had “some big ideas in the pipeline” for this summer’s series.

Samwell-Smith added that O’Connor had “played a pivotal role” in the success of the format.

“He is a brilliantly creative producer and with Denis at the helm Big Brother couldn’t be better placed to keep fans enthralled year after year,” he added.

Doubtful. He's hardly Alison Garderner or whatever her name is from the U.S. series.

According to google, he's apparently (1/3) responsible for the white room twist.
I don't know how "negative" I feel about it, since BB has already been tempering with the prize fund (BB5) and the audience awarding it to a vile one (BB15). You can't always win.

I remember seeing a bit of it back in 2008 and thought it was pretty good, but I never watched much.

My main problem with it was the result. I mean, I'm opposed to prize fund twists on principle anyway, but the White Room wouldn't have left such a bad taste if someone who was actually likeable got the money.

Not gonna lie, I had the same thought when I first glanced at the title. :joker:

Is this good or???
Speaking of the white room twist, I felt it was actually not that bad. Looking back on it, yeah the wrong person walked with the money but with a little work it could have been a great twist. It felt kind of 'channel 4 ish' too imo

If the white room twist is the worst thing this guy has been behind then I doubt there's too much to worry about at this stage. The only reason that didn't go down well was because Conor won it.

I guess if we're looking for good in this, he worked on eviction shows during BB11 which were generally quite well-received due to how they made the crowd look big etc. I'm not saying this will lead to an exterior change because... well, it won't, but I'm sure he's a much safer pair of hands than a lot of the alternatives.

I'd like to see the return of the recorded goodbye messages tbh, that was one of the changes I liked with BB11.

He was in charge of the live eviction shows in 2010.

Hopefully he can do something about the state of the ones we've been getting in recent series.

I agree.
I think it was MB. who said in another thread a few days ago, that the White Room was the least producer manipulated twist, and I agree.

It wasn't a bad twist, it just left a bad taste as someone repugnant walked away with £50K.
I've always thought the hate for the WR was only because of the outcome, as opposed to the actual twist its self. If somebody like Adam won the money for instance, then people would be saying it was the best Channel 5 twist.

I agree with the person who said it felt very Channel 4. It did.

The White Room was a better twist than any of the daily conflict-egineered crap we got in the dreadful BB15. Period.

I thought people who disliked him would have been happy he took it and left because it meant not seeing him on BB anymore, As he could have been evicted couple of days before the final or in the final. He walked out to cheers didn't he? i think he would have been in the final.

The White Room was the best twist Channel 5 have ever done. The outcome sucked but that didn't stop the live show being super exciting! :amazed:

I think Caroline's eviction, where all the housemates were up, bar Scott and Becky was pretty much an indicator of how the final would work out.

I think if he did make the final, he would've come fifth place.
Or if he was nominated during the last week, he probably would've gone, before the final.

I'm surprised at how popular he was.

Him getting over 80% in a vote to save, against Shievonne just proves that democracy doesn't work. :nono:

Nice to know I'm not the only one liking the white room twist. It was a good idea that has unfortunately backfired. Had it been an insider to win the series, I couldn't have asked for a better revenge than an outsider to push that button in the WR and rob half of the prize.

Something that I won't mind him doing is adding the few seconds of feed back at the end of eviction shows, Jumping straight to BOTS is a no no

Now you see why they have increased the prize money. Big chunks of it are going to be given away in daft twists along the way.

I don't see why anyone who disliked him would be happy that he was rewarded for his repulsive behaviour with half of the prize money. The way he left actually stopped me from enjoying his departure fully. :joker:

He may have been in the final (and 100% would have been if Luke S took the money), but no chance would he have won. Having him leave empty-handed and as a result of the vote would have been intensely more satisfying, even if it happened in the final.

The prize money could be better spend on a better website as its needs a revamp including live feed.
